Hasn't that already happened with the self-checkouts...:p

There called self-serve, but every time you scan more than one item within 30 seconds, the machine locks up and you have to call someone over, and if you put it straight into your trolley instead of into a bag it thinks your a theif and locks up again...

Only once did MrsH and I try to use the self service stations for a weekly shop. Absolute nightmare. Exactly as per your post. I think we had the checkout supervisor reset the machine 15 times!!

OK for a handful of items though.

Oh good, it isn't just me. I thought I was doing it wrong. :p

There are little lights above the scanners. They turn red once you have scanned an item and turn green when it is ok to scan another item. Likewise with the bags and putting things into trolleys. Sit the item on the baggage area after scanning and then place in trolley when lights turn green above scanner. I used to stuff it up every time until a very helpful Woolies worker explained it to me

Thanks for the advice... I've seen those green lights and wondered what they are for.... You would think after being called over 15 times the WW worked would have explained it to me. :)

I don't get that problem at all.
The only problem l have is if l fill my carry basket to the top with bulky products, when l self-serve check out, there isn't enough space after scanning on that tiny shelf and l need to call the check-out assistant, who then puts in a code that allows me to take a bag off the shelf to finish my basket of goods (it adds the weight up as it goes and thinks your stealing if you remove a checked item before you have finished scanning).

*(Slightly illegal and stories floating around on the net, but; there are people who buy expensive fruit or veg, ie; cherries/mangoes/avacardo etc etc, but when they weight and select the item, they select something cheap like apples/oranges/onions, instead of $19.99 kg, you only pay $5.00kg.)

*(I don't do this)

I’m waiting for an Australian supermarket to introduce the system they have in Waitrose in the UK,you can register as a regular customer and are given a plastic card which you swipe when you enter the store, you then take a special hand held bar code scanner and you can start your shopping,
You can then scan each item as you shop and the scanner gives you a running total of your shopping, when you finish you go through a special full length checkout, place the scanner in a special
Unit which reads the total and you then pay for the goods ,the only down side is you can’t pay with cash and have to use a debit or credit card to pay but otherwise it’s a fantastic system which lets you see how much you are spending as you go and makes shopping quicker.
Would love to see an aussie supermarket introduce it.

Yes, yes, yes. I would love to have a Waitrose-styled Quick Check system in Australia.

So what if I can't pay by cash, it allows shoppers to be more efficient, pack on the go, and basically walk straight out of the store.

However, one of the reasons why stores have been so hesitent to introduce these technologies is the issue of inventory management and loss control. These systems reduce the number of methods available to make sure customers aren't ripping them off. I can't say I know enough about the Waitrose implimentation to understand how they combat the problem.

As far as I'm aware they have random checks where a staff member will ask to watch you as you go through the check out procedure, but I don't believe that they have had much of a problem with fraud, not compared to normal stores like Tesco anyway, but I can't provide any figures to support that statement.
Cheers

From Wiki:
Whereas rivals Tesco and Asda have implemented self-service checkout terminals in their stores, Waitrose offer a different self-service system known as 'Quick-Check'. Customers must register to use the system and upon entering the store they will be issued with a hand-held PDA with built-in barcode scanner, allowing them to scan and pack items as they are taken from the shelf; unpacked items from the produce and bakery departments can be self-weighed and labelled, and then scanned, at self-service weigh-stations located in their respective departments. The customer then pays his/her bill at the 'Quick-check' counter by returning the PDA to the cashier terminal, which will ring up the total bill. Occasionally, customers will have their shopping checked by a member of staff to make sure that all items bought have been scanned and paid for.
However, as of January 2011, some larger Waitrose stores are trialling self-scan tills, with some having cash and card payment whilst others have just card. Despite views that this will diminsh the chance for excellent customer service, this is not the case. A partner will be present at all times at these tills, and will seek to aid the customer if any problems arise. This will hopefully allow customers to get through the checkouts little quicker, and maintain the excellent customer service that underpins the partnership.

Ok, I was involved in the implementation of the system used at Waitrose. I can tell you that the net outcome is a gain for the supermarket, how?
Because of the folk that pick an item from the shelf, scan it, put it in the trolley, then later change their mind , put it back on the shelf and forget to de-scan it.
This far out weighs the value of goods that are 'lost'.
Cheers

Profiting from incompetance and stupidity, how nice.

We used to do self scanning with a hand held scanner 12 years ago at Safeway ( now Morrisons) in Glasgow. They had special trolleys with green crates which you brought to the supermarket and filled with your groceries, no green or plastic bags. They also had a Crèche for the little Shreks, and a Post Office.
Sorry it's seriously OT,but any supermarket here with this service would have my business

Mrs Shintaro10x is not happy having to go to a total of four Woolworths Supermarkets to do the ID check for the secondary card application so she can spend all my money.

She reports that one shop said their computer was not switched on so come back later...:?: On arrival back there the next day apparently the computer was now switched on but the system could not allow for an ID check (perhaps that shop is still running windows 3.1 )

Since HSBC is the only company willing to approve credit for me, I'm going to hit them up for an increase in credit limit, this card is running too hot and I really struggle to keep within my $20k limit...

Its only been 5 months I have had this card, and you are meant to wait six months to apply for a credit limit increase, I'm going to get in before the rush... Wish me luck :)

The EDR Bar Code is on the back of the CC. So you don't need the EDR card any more.

You'll probably need to explain it to the check out person....I'm not sure Woolworths have explained it to them!!

I am constantly having to explain to the people behind the counter that the EDR bar code is the code on the back of EDR credit card - many still seem to be mystified when I ask them to scan the credit cards barcode!

See post #778. :D

You'd think that they would have had an inservice on it by now, rather than waiting to learn something like this from customers. Some of them are good sports about it, but for some, despite being nice about it but firmly insistent that the EDR Credit Card should be scanned, seem embarrassed that they didn't know, and that's not fair for them.

he he....they are starting to know me at the local Woolworths store now, I'm the one that comes in with a handful of cash every week to top up my card, at first they took it so seriously, but now its a simple "How much today"

Next time I have to take a phone photo of the checkout screen, so funny seeing so many $$$$ on a supermarket checkout terminal... and then theres the looks from the customers when you hand over a wad of cash only to receive a very small receipt in return...:p

These are the games I must play until they either increase my limit or someone will approve me for another card... would be easier if the BPAY payments did not take so long to clear...!

Going to run over 150% of my limit on this card this month, and was at 100% last month, all this heavy use should make my application for more credit easier for them to process...I hope:rolleyes:

Have you increased or decreased your limit since you received your CC? If not, then you can do either , but after one or the other, they 'lock' it in for 6 months. I decreaed mine and was told l couldn't increase it until 6 months had passed. Why not cash advane and BPAY and yet to get ahead?

Maybe a AMEX branded big 4 card with a higher limit might suit you better? And earn better than 1:1 earning rate. The way l see it, your loosing points by using this card.
