Despite multiple requests not to my dad seems to book all travel through expedia on family holidays. I am not sure but I have a feeling that expedia doesn't give the full range of options as far as getting the best miles and SCs. Am I correct or is expedia fine?

what do you mean full range of options? I've used expedia to book travel and no issues.. If you are booking OS travel the SC isn't going to change as everything but Y is going to earn disc Y

...everything but Y is going to earn disc Y...

There are traps like American Airlines discount Y fares giving zero SC´s, points etc with the QFF program, even if flying on QF metal, but the sole fact that a ticket is purchased via Expedia wont change anything. I think?

Not quite. Any site will be the same, depending on the fare class booked.

I recently booked some UA flights on Expedia, and they showed as 'Economy(L)' indicating it was booking into L fare bucket.

It should be just a case of seeing what the QF fare bucket Expedia is booking into is, and then verifying on the QF chart that they are indeed eligible for earn. It's important to note that booking on AA directly will ensure you earn SC's either, unless you book Fully Flexible, Instant Upgrade or Business/First fares. It always pays to verify the booking class before paying, regardless of the site booked (the joys of FF program intricacies!)

The other thing that you might miss out on is opportunity - opportunity to take more profitable routings, staying with particular alliances etc.

Someone might want to confirm the impact on hotel earning as well if that is relevant. If you don't book the hotel website sometimes you don't earn.

As long as you know what Travell class you're getting the booking in (beyond simply Economy/Business/First) but the specific fare codes, Ie. K,Y,A,B,C etc.. which site you use shouldn't effect the SC earn rate.

Isnt that what I said??
No, as not all discount economy on AA doesn't earn on QF.

For example, from low-to-high on QF, it's O/Q/N for discount economy (leave out E class, that's relatively new). On AA, O class on QF earns but not N, even though N is higher. It's an anomaly of the program.

For earning with QF on AA, many discount economy tickets earn, just not all.

And it's not just Y. It's actually Y/B/H/K on AA for full fare earn. G/L/M/N/S/V earn discount points/SC's, F/A/P all earn First rates and D/I/J for Business.

Just because AA list it as 'discount economy' doesn't mean it won't earn :)
