Can flights be booked with a travel date that is after the expiry date of the points? Or do I need to book AND fly before the expiry date?

I have points expiring at the end of the year and just want to know if I can use the points before they expire but for travel in 2023.

Yes it can be after the points expiry. However, if you cancel/refund, you will lose the points if at the point that you cancel/refund the points would be past their expiry.

Hi all, I have points booking to Italy in Aug this year and due to various reasons we cannot go. I knew when I used my points to purchase the flights that the points would have expired in the next few months (at that time)

I looked to change my flights today but it's NOT an option on line, it's a dead icon with a message "Call your local Sing office.

Before I cancel, and loose circa 400k points, are there any options to extend the points life that I originally had so I don't have to transfer new points to make up the difference between the lost points if I cancel . Such a dilemma.

Thank you all in advance for any tips

If the KF miles were still in your account, they have been extending the life of KF miles on and on, for 6 months at one time.
But as you have already made a redemption, I am afraid that it, kaput, use it or loose it.
See, you have a points booking, meaning that the points are no longer yours, even though you have not used it as such, but the points have been "used" for those seats.
You could try phoning up, and see what they say, you might loose half of the points as a penalty, or loose part of the points as a penalty, and the rest might come back to your account.
But as for a sure cert, I can't say.
I flew with SQ and AirNZ, putting in my KF FF #, first in 2017, points were to expire in 2020, but they have extended the life of my KF miles, but I haven't used them as a redemption, so they were floating in my account, without being used.
Your case is a bit different, though.
Think that phoning them up, is the best policy, pay the points penalty, at least maybe get some of the points back, if you cancel, rather than do a no show, no contact.

They are doing free date changes until the end of May and one more free date change after that. My plan is to change my travel date to 12 months from now which apparently can be done if you call them and hope that I can use the ticket sometime in the next 12-24 months.

Thanks all, excellent replies, I'll certainly go down the path of calling pleading my case to firstly change the dates and if not ask for a penalty and hopefully retain some points.

I'll report back with the result as there would be a few AFF's in the same boat, well plane maybe hahahah

Are you sure this is correct? I understand if we didnt have this Covid situation, your statement is true. But I understood it to be any bookings made in the last 1-2 years, if you cancel it you will get the points back without penalty. Assuming of course the booking was made in the last 1-2 years.

The statement is indeed incorrect. One thing though: their system does not automatically catch this (for extension of the miles that are to be deposited back into your account); you’ll have to call to have the miles reinstated and extended.

Don't know if you cancel, you get your points back without penalty, due to covid or other reasons, with other FF programs, you pay a penalty in points they don't refund, if yo you cancel a FF booking (redemption), but, yeah, better Mark4217 contacts them and ask.
Maybe I should not say about penalty points and you get back some.
Pity that KF has points life though.
I would have preferred they had the UA system, no points expiry.

I concur. KF must be (one of) the last major programs with harsh expiry policy; the only other one I can think of was EY that has gone from 2 years expiry from earning date to 2 years without any activity in the account.

From what I have read in this and other forums, trying to get your miles reinstated is very difficult and will require many calls over a long period of time.

Can confirm, from first hand experience.

Ended up getting all the ~55,000 miles that had disappeared post miles redeposit after an award cancellation, but the amount of fluffing around to get it (including trying to time the live chat and wait for callbacks that never came), was a bit frustrating.
As a genuinely overly patient person, this experience did test that.
Worth it in the end - 55,000 miles takes ages to earn with regular everyday spend.

So how many times did you have to contact them, and how long did it take for points to be returned?

Let's just say daily (or near daily), for a tad over a month.
I’m having the same issue. Cancelled not realising that the miles (110,000)wouldn't be reinstated. Many, many calls with no call back and no resolution. Have been told it has been escalated Many times. Would really appreciate if you could tell me how you managed to eventually get them back. I have spoken to 2 redemption agents but still don’t seem to get anywhere. I am so frustrated as need to make bookings and don’t have the points or taxes back.
Thanks😀

Wow - that's just about as horrible as my experience trying to nab my miles back!

All I can say is that I hounded them on Live Chat (when I could even get through to them), and eventually explained in polite terms that I was very disappointed with the way this thing has panned out.
Eventually managed to get someone who was sympathetic to my plight, arranged a call back a few days later and lo and behold the miles were there.
It wasn't easy, there was no shortcut, and no special treatment. Just gotta be the squeaky wheel that gets the grease as the saying goes.
Good luck and report back here how you go!

I'm in the same situation - Cancellation has gone through, points redeposited, then promptly expired. Been calling every 3 days for about 2 weeks now and the promised call back never comes.

Pretty disappointing really, but not as bad as QF where I wasn't even able to get through the cancel my upcoming flight in the 2 weeks prior to flying and in the end was probably a no-show..

Will report back on how I go and try the live chat some more.

After almost 2 months and maybe 4 calls, expired points from a cancellation were reinstated. On each call, I was reassured that the points would be applied back to the account and I tend to believe them. If I were more patient, I think it would have been sorted from the first call, as it was consistently explained to me that the resolution had been handed off to another section for manual processing, which was experiencing high demands.

Now I just have to spend 1.3M points (ex VA) by March 2023, unless further extensions are granted.

So my turn now.

Went to cancel a redemption online today, says my 80K KF miles are expired so wont be refunded. Please call SIA to cancel.
However none are expiring till end July and they are getting extended to Jan 2023 anyway.
these will be my first extension when end July rolls around.

guess I have to ring and argue my case?
