The VFL is basically an Eastern state reserves comp for the AFL.Was stuck in the OOL VA lounge last Friday arvo and there was an immense number of football players hanging around for their delayed MEL flight. They didn't seem the usual tall muscly AFL blokes, looked rather ordinary, if fit looking. Turns out they were the Southport Sharks a VFL team. I didn't realise the VFL still existed except as a sort of Melbourne reserve grade competition. I counted 35 players in travelling uniform plus there were any number of support staff and a few WAGs by the look of it. Must be more money in a second tier football comp than I thought.
All 14 Eastern state based AFL teams have a reserved team in the VFL and then there are 7 standalone clubs such as Southport that are in the comp. In the not too distant future the 2 Adelaide and 2 Perth based teams will have teams in it too. The AFL foots all the travel and accomodation costs. Stand-alone clubs have a salary cap of $220k so as you can see the players are only on a pittance
