....Do AS have their own bucket of award seats with each airline, or just dip into the 'general' pool?...
While having no proof I have always thought award seats come on the "general pool" as shown for P, U etc on QF web site, expert flyer and the like. Over on FT QF seems to be used by some people as a tool to access award availability for a number of freq flyer programmes.

I checked the chart and it says 60k return to HKG but it's not clear how much to other cities in Asia (or maybe I'm missing something).

Oh, sorry, .... I mis-read your question. Hope some-one else can clarify.

Does anyone know how many miles required from Australia to Asia on CX (to BKK or ICN via HKG)?

As far as I know have to go via HKG be 60K AS miles, is about USD$1200 (with current bonus of 40% gratis) return in j!!

AS deals like this are not to every city, but hey still fantastic buy.

you can't redeem anywhere other than the specific routes specified. It's HKG and you are on your own from there

Proud to say I have this one bookmarked now! Thanks also to the replies re availability. I'm in!

That Alaskan site lists the following

Coach

Intra-Australia
12,500

25,000

Premium Coach
Intra-Australia
15,000
30,000
Business
Intra-Australia
20,000
40,000

I realise that 'coach' is YankSpeak for economy but what do they categorise as 'Premium Coach' on domestic flights given that QF doesn't have Y+ on domestic flights? If you booked QF 'Coach' for 25,000 and QF 'Premium Coach' for 30,000 what extra would get apart from a 10,000 mile debit on your account?

you can't book premium economy as it doesn't exist intra-australia

Ok, I think I got it now. For any other destination in Asia after HKG it's additional 45k for a return trip in J.

These AS miles deals are not the be all and end all, not supposed to be, but there is a vast range of cites to go to or from, so if you can transit one city to another in the network and awards are there your really laughing all the way to the bank, big time, just needs some research to save many thousands.

Perhaps we should aim to have a thread along the like of 'successful UDSM bookings' to help the initiated on AFF.

Availability, as with all FF schemes, would be the key issue.

I will dip my toes come April and hope for the best.

yup let's make it as easy as possible so as much award availability that is out there is taken up.

Very good idea, mods what you think?.

I joined AS in Dec, 48 hours later purchased 3 lots points, last month used them to book CNS/HKG/CNS in J for May with 3 week spread in between as we are off to Europe. So try to buy beforehand as its not fixed 10 days.

Seems like CX have pulled the majority of award flights to HKG in July after speaking with an Alaskan Air booking agent. Couldn't find a single business or first class ticket for the dates I wanted to HKG or KIX/HND/NRT despite speaking to another booking agent last week who was able to accommodate to my dates. QF is the same but they have totally blocked out all July dates for award fares, or so I was told.

Not too happy with this, hopefully there was some kind of error on booking agent's behalf.
