[fare gone] Yangon to New York, London etc. R/T in Business under $850

I am thinking I should buy a SIN-RGN return flight so if the original ticket isn't honoured I can still leave. I would have the return about a week after arrival so I have a chance to visit Burma if I can't do the flights. A refundable return leg of course!

Still gotta get to Seoul, but.

I'm using AA miles and I'm investigating whether travel insurance would cover the USD150 cost of reinstating the miles, should their be an issue. Of great concern, though, are some reports on Flyertalk of some cancellations occurring very, very close to departure, like with 48 hours. People have already positioned.

I'm not sure I follow as to why travel insurance would cover the cost of the reinstatement of the miles? It is an action you would initiate, and not caused by any of the cancellation provisions (including illness etc) in the insurance policy?

That's why I'm trying to get clarification as whether a claim would be entertained. I suppose, to think of another scenario, I think of it as like paying for an air ticket from home in Australia to Paris, then using miles for, say, a flight to Dubai and back. If the air ticket from Australia to Paris was cancelled for some reason, perhaps a volcanic eruption or disablement of a traveller or the like, I'm obviously not going to be in Paris to be able to use those miles for the award flight to Dubai.

Similarly, in this Yangon situation, if I'd purchased non-refundable hotel accommodation, I would hope that I could claim those expenses if the airline suddenly decided it wasn't honouring the fare.

I know it's not cut and dry, hence the reason I'm trying to get some guidance. Ultimately, I'd just want my non-refundable, out of pocket expenses covered.

I have just checked travelocity to find that the first three legs have been dropped to Y (Oh Why?!?). I can't see the last leg (LHR-YUL) however I expect the same for that too.

Now do I bother going from RGN-KUL-SIN-LHR-YUL in Y for $500? I have booked MEL-SIN (refundable) and will still need SIN-RGN and to get home from YUL, although I am happy to spend some time in North America (YUPP etc).

*sad face*
Ok, now I am a little confused and would appreciate some advice:

My travelocity itinerary is as above, however I have asked IB to email me the itinerary and whilst the LHR-YUL leg is still missing, the other flights show the original class (J/F). Which do I believe?

Edit: MH 'manage booking' site is down so am unable to triple check.

Have you asked IB over the phone whether they can see the LHR-YUL segment?

I am in a similar situation. On travelocity.com, the LHR-JFK and the LHR-YUL sectors are missing (different itineraries) and all other sectors in Y. However, on the BA, IB, CX and QF websites, all is fine, including the classes. So Travelocity is the only one not giving me the correct information.

You are not the only confused one. Travelocity shows me in Y from RGN-KUL-SIN-LHR, LHR-YUL dropped, but Check My Trip, IB and SQ mobile app all show me in original class (J/F). SQ mobile app also allows me to change F seats. I am concerned that even showing as booked in J and the ticket may be invalid. Who knows! I am not travelling until August so I'll just wait and see what happens.....

I hesitate to make one-to-one contact for fear of tipping my hand as it were.

I am not flying until June so I think I will sit it out and see what the (not inconsiderable) discussion on FT brings.

It would be nice if the various sites were consistent.

Another development.

Just got an email from travelocity (that ironically went straight into my junk email folder), under subject heading "Refund Confirmation" First communication I have had on this:

Thank you for booking your travel reservations with Travelocity.com.

Your refund has been processed. Your credit should be posted to your account within 45 days. Please note that posting of funds is contingent upon action by your financial institution.

Thank you,

Travelocity.com

And within the last hour the SQ and MH sectors have disappeared from the booking, no longer can look the trip up in check my trip and travelocity just shows LHR to JFK on a fictitious IB flight on 29 Dec 2012 timed to depart and arrive at 12am.

I have received the same email, and can no longer see my booking on IB. Looks like round three is fast disappearing.

Yep. Seems the next challenge will be getting the Travelocity booking fee back. And of course there will be the forex fees both on the way in and the way out...... Which will come to $50 or so.

Not that I would want to throw $50 away, but what would be involved?

Would the Travelocity refund be an email request to them? And the forex to the CC company?

On FT the suggestion is that Travelocity aren't refunding their booking fee but email follow up worthwhile. The forex fee is issue for bank/cc provider, therefore could be difficult too!

Thanks for the advice; I will see what lobs in my account and then take it from there.

P.S. Thanks for keeping up with FT - the thread seems to grow quicker than I can read it.

I now I have recieved the following email:

Dear JessicaTam,

You recently attempted to book a trip which originated in Myanmar. A carrier has canceled one or more of the segments in your itinerary. In order to resolve this issue or to request a refund in advance of your travel date, please contact Iberia Airlines at 800.772.4642 to determine the status of your booking.

Sincerely,
Travelocity Customer Care

Someone has crunched the numbers and come up missing a couple of digits! I think Lazarus would have trouble with this.

I got my refund yesterday. They didn't refund the booking fee though.

Any ideas on how to get the $10 booking fee back? Already lost $2 on the forex transactions!!!

dispute the booking fee with your credit card provider. by disputing the fee, rather than having it refunded, the charge will be voided as if it had never happened. when that is the case, no forex losses.

if you need to give a reason, say it is 'travel agent cancel without consent'. that avoids the notion you might have cancelled and legitimately have incurred the booking fee originally.
