Re: Book the cook suggestions by departure city

They won't let me have lobster thermodore for SIN-BKK in J

I emailed Singapore Airlines about BTC on this route a couple days ago. They replied saying BTC is not available, and you will be served a meal from the onboard menu.

Re: Book the cook suggestions by departure city

Hi all.

Just wondering what fellow travellers would recommend for BTC SIN - AMS?

:)

Re: Book the cook suggestions by departure city

Just looked...they have added a few more dishes since I last flew and some look very good. Out of Singapore you can't go past the Asian dishes imo. Two I have tried are Beef Rendang and Lamb Shank Curry. Both scrumptious. The crew have told me that they like these dishes also and like it when a passenger changes their mind pre-service leaving the dish begging.

Re: Book the cook suggestions by departure city

I quite enjoyed the nasi lemak.

Re: Book the cook suggestions by departure city

Mmmmmm, sounds like many of the options out of Singapore are pretty good. Partner will definitely be interested in the Lamb Shank Curry..... Might have to give it a go myself. Thanks!

STOP all this incessant chatter NOW :) :)
The ONLY book the cook worth even considering, is Lobster Thermidor.........

I'll get to try it as I've booked it for my SIN-SYD flight in a couple of weeks.

Had the barramundi yesterday and the fish was delicious. The rice was a little dry for my liking.

Re: Book the cook suggestions by departure city

SYD - SIN - lobster thermidor. Quite tasty though you get maybe 5 bites as it's rather small. Still i was plenty full by the end of the meal service and ready for my sweet bed to be made

SIN - TOK - wagyu beef steak. Was OK when I compare to steaks on teh ground but prob one of the best I've had in the air. I enjoyed it, though cutting meat with a bread knife sucks big time.

If you can have the harris chicken on a flight give it a go. Very tasty. Think this is just a flight only option.

I don't think I quite enjoyed mine, or maybe I didn't enjoy the sides on the dish.

I heard Chicken rice is good out of SIN.

The Yumcha breakfast dish was horrible from what the missus told me.

Re: Book the cook suggestions by departure city

Hi, re BTC. Is the point of booking it just to guarantee you get the meal? I would of thought in J that you would just choose what you want from the menu? Or is that not the case?

Re: Book the cook suggestions by departure city

Gday

I flew SIN- SYD in J a couple of days ago on the A380 and used BTC for the Lobster. Was ok but when i go again i will try something different. Overall i thought the meal service was pretty average although being a night flight probably affected the meal duration. Dessert had no choice, just some cut fruit. Was asleep when they did the breakfast run so not sure what i missed out on there. Other thing was no amenity kit at all. First long haul J without it in my experience. The seat was super wide but i would have sacrificed some of that width for more length as the feet hole is small and means you have to sleep diagonally to stretch out.

BTC allows you to select from a whole different menu, much more variety and also dependent on which country you fly out of, which isn't available on the plane and also guarantees you the meal you choose.

I'll be doing the same on the 15th. I'll see how things go. Cheers.

Re: Book the cook suggestions by departure city

Pity. I leave PEN on the evening of 14th. Transit in SIN for under a couple of hours and depart just past midnight 15th.

Oh, you are going the opposite way to me. I am flying SYD-xSIN-NRT (SQ232/SQ638). I arrive into SIN at 17:40 and depart 23:55 so if you're free/cool, I could/might catch up with you briefly at the lounge or TPR after you land. I will be going land-side first though to meet up with my sister and her family for dinner at Jumbo - ECP so should get back to the airport around 2230 - I'll send you a PM a bit later for my details.

After reading this thread one more time and reading those recommendations, I finally made a decision:-

SYD-SIN : Indian Lamb Shank Curry - it had multiple positive comments so let's give that a go. I was tempted for the Roast Chicken but I can get Roast Chicken anytime of the day living so close to Sydney's Chinatown anyway (but thanks to diningdecandence's photo - it almost swayed me)

SIN-NRT : Bak Kuh Teh (TKK said it's really good so it better be mate - I am coming back to give feedback ;) As much as I love Beef Rendang it might be a bit too heavy for that midnight flight, so Bak Kuh Teh won this time.

NRT-LAX : Lobster Thermidor (yes, I have had lobster multiple times on a plane before including my very first SQ F flight many years ago and none has ever impressed me but how can I refuse the idea of having lobster on a plane? If its not nice and I'm still hungry, I will order some satay skewers ;) And prior to landing, hopefully the Healthy Japanese Breakfast choice is a winner. For some reason, breakfast meals are always the weakest part of all airlines food offering so hoping I am a bit impressed from this choice.

Re: Book the cook suggestions by departure city

Mrs TKK has high standards for roast duck and she was pleased with the one she had recently ex-SYD.

That was my experience as well. It appears that you miss out on the "extras" when you are on the Sleeper flight. They just "dressed" the table and plonked the lobster on it. The cut fruit was the same cut fruit served for breakfast. The steward set up my table for breakfast but the stewardess told him (right in front of me) that "he already had his meal after take-off". The somewhat embarrassed steward than turned to me and nicely asked if I would like something light for breakfast - which I accepted since I was a bit peckish. I definitely prefer the more personalised service afforded on the 777 on my outbound flight.

Re: Book the cook suggestions by departure city

My new favourite is the curry patta lobster, only available from SIN though.

Have made my first SQ redemption in F MEL-SIN-HKG. Now I get to go through the exciting experience of book the cook.

Any suggestions on what I should order? Do they tend to do better at a particular cuisine (e.g. Asian v Western v Indian), or is everything of a good quality? How does it compare to what comes on the ordinary trolley?

If I book the cook, am I barred from also ordering from the normal menu if I so feel inclined for extras?

Current menus here FYI:
