Just back on track a little. If my upgrade gets approved I will be able to tell on line (or via an email) about 5 hours before the flight - which means I can change my luggage selection accordingly - as I will get a higher allowance. I assume even though I am not flying on my QF SG card I can still take advantage of my extra 10kg :)

Hmm 40KG for a 2 week business trip to NZ - maybe I could do some people smuggling ;)
Or even some good Aussie wine;) !!!!! Do not forget that NZ DF alllowances are very generous in regards to alcohol!

Hmm - hadnt thought about - was only thinking Video camera purchase. Maybe a good time to stock up on Moet on the way back :D :D

Given I have thirty litres of various spirits at home (and hardly drink any spirits) I am using my travel to stock up on Champagne - considerably cheaper in duty free :)

Yes, a lot better than into Oz. Here's a summary:
Into New Zealand
Per Adult:
1 Bottle of spirits (see below for Over Allowance Conditions) plus 4.5 litres of Wine, port, Sherry, Champagne (six bottles) or beer (12 cans).
200 cigarettes or 250 gms of tobacco or 50 cigars
NZ $700 of other goods purchased Duty Free or overseas.

New Zealand duty free Over Allowance:

Provided you do not exceed the above allowances you may bring in an additional 2 bottles of spirits (1125ml) and declare the additional 2 bottles of spirits to customs.

Into Australia
Per Adult:
Up to 2,250ml of alcohol (total)
One carton of 250 cigarettes or 250g of loose tobacco, plus one opened packet (up to 25 sticks)
Up to AUD900 worth of personal goods (AUD450 for minors).
Source: Duty Free Stores New Zealand - New Zealand duty free and other duty free allowances

Just make sure drink all except the last 2.25 litres before you head back to Oz. :p

The only problem is that the wine you can buy at duty free is good/expensive wine so I wouldnt save anything by buying it there and drinking it whilst I was in NZ - and one of the best things about NZ is that you can buy alcohol in the supermarket - you dont have to go to some dodgy bottlo!

I travel to NZ 5-8 times a year and often pick up a 6 pack on arrival for about NZ$6. (12 Pack for longer stays). These same packs cost about NZ$13 in the stores.

(Hmmm.. gettin a bit offTopic here .... )

Yes but it does not stop you from buying it in a regular Australian Discount Bottlo and very carefully packing it and therefore use your additional baggage allowance. You will not be charged duty by MAF when you enter NZ and you could distribute the Oz wine for goodwill in NZ. They need good wine, in particular reds, here as they seem to rave abut their gutless pinot noir....;)
Well I should know as that is how I have survived here the last year,....ah Knappstein Reserve and Blue Pyrennese:mrgreen:

Interestingly our travel managers dont seem to be able to cope with the concept of using a FF number other than my QFF number for all my bookings . Having told them three times now all my flights still appear on the qantas website under "Your bookings". Ah well at least this helps with the preallocation of seats until I hit AA platinum - and I can just tell them the number at check in. And even though I have said three times (as well) to send me the amadeus reference when they book flights - they seem incapable of that - so at least bookng my fligths on my QF number meaans I can then jump onto the qantas site and get the amadeus reference....

Once you have a seat assigned, I would suggest getting the FF number changed. QF agents have, ime, quite often made mistakes changing the FF number such that it either still credits to QF or just doesn't credit anywhere.

By doing it in advance, you can easily verify that checkmytrip is showing your number in the correct format ( Qantas Airways - AAxx_xx_ )

Perhaps tell the travel managers to remove your QF FF number from their records

For the AKL flight this weekend I will wait until the upgrade is confirmed or not - so I will do that one at the airport (might even check www.checkmytrip.com in the lounge to make sure :))

For the other flights I will do it pretty soon - as those are either WT+ or J and seats are already allocated - just want to get through this weekend before I sort things out. Mind you I need to switch my economy flights to BNE back to my QFF number to get better seat allocation and then switch on the day to AA. All very tricky :)

Your upgrade request will be unaffected by whether you are crediting to QF or AA. Your upgrade priority will be determined by the account where the points are being deducted

I have seen peoples challenges go screwy by playing the FF number swap game , so would recommend keeping it simple and avoiding risks where possible

Hmm - well a quick call on Sunday morning will be easy I think. Then I will sort out the rest. Next week wont be too hectic so I can get things sorted. Now that my seats are allocated for BKK and back I am happy to change that.

I tried to do something similar for my JFK/LAX flight last week. I wanted my whole itinerary, which had QF flight numbers and was a red e-deal, credited to QFF but had to keep my AA number in the booking because I had an upgrade request for AA133 (sold as QF3184), the JFK/LAX leg. I did a sneaky and loaded the booking onto AA.com which allowed me to request the upgrade on the back of my AA Plat account, even though the rules state that to upgrade, it must be an AA marketed and ticketed flight, which it wasn't.

The upgrade cleared a few hours before the flight and so when I checked in at JFK, I asked them to remove my AA number. The computer said NO. The agent said that because I had requested an upgrade, she couldn't remove my AA number and there was nothing she could do, but she could still see my QFF number in the booking.

Days after the flight, it didn't credit to either QF or AA. So I requested a missing flight claim on qantas.com and yesterday they credited my QFF account with the QF flight number, so I got all the points and SCs I was expecting.

Hmm - well maybe a call tomorrow might be in order - too exhausted now. At least this is only a little flight that needs crediting - teh big ones are SYD-BKK rtn and SYD-SIn rtn :)

Well its a very nervous Sim at the moment. I just checked on expertflyer.com and saw only 1 unreserved seat in business class at the moment :( Now unless they have allocated my upgrade and just not told me.... Might need a couple more beers in the QP to make up for it :(

Check your points balance. If the upgrade is your then the points wlll be gone. If your balance has not been reduced, then the upgrade is not there.

:( No points deduction :( So I will have to wait and see if that solitary seat stays free ;)

Is there any point at which the QF website says "Upgrade unsuccessful"? I cant see the status of the J class seats on expertflyer now as it says "Pre-assigned seating is not available for this flight because the airline is holding the seat assignments for the gate agent. ". And no points have been deducted. I guess I basically fracked and very glad that I preallocated seat 26F :-|

When the upgrade has been issued, it will show on My Bookings on QF FF site as well as being obvious due to the points removal from your account. In my experience these are immediate when the upgrade has cleared. If these do not show in your account, then it is reasonable to assume you will be in the cabin for which you have paid.

Don't foget the upgrade can come anytime right up to boarding. You can even be advised as late as boarding at the gate.
