Flying with mask

That old chestnut!!! šŸ¤£

Even a double randomised controlled CASE ONLY study can be seriously defective -
1) The subjects were already on BP meds then they were swopped to a randomised drug. What did they swop from?. To what extent was the observed differences influenced by swopping out of their usual meds. The discontinuation of BP meds does not mean cessation of its benefits which may carry on for some years. BP meds may have more benefit other than reduction in BP. Importantly the type of pre-study BP meds were also NOT collectedšŸ˜±
2)Additional BP meds other than the study drugs were able to be prescribed during the study - at the physician's discretion šŸ¤
3)There was no information on the reasons these subjects were prescribed their pre-study meds. The meds could have been for related but different reasons.
4)This is case only study. meaning they studied only the sick people and there was no control group as in a case control study
5) they then answered a different question post hoc!! "What is the optimal first step therapy" which was not the question in the original prospective design. = posthoc reasoning bias. ALLHAT was not designed to test whether diuretic should be the first line drug.
6) Their assumption that hypertension is a risk factor only and not a disease in itself of many causes.

Etc etc etc

What is the most comfortable mask to be wearing on long-haul flights? Are there are which don't go over the ears?

I don't really care how "effective" it is, I just want something that's very comfortable and breathable, and satisfies the mask rule.

Haven't got first hand experience yet but a lot of people are say the KF94 ones are really good and a lot of those come with clips so you can clip them away from the ears across the back of the head.

@Princess Fiona has given some good advice on Soomlab masks for this purpose. Scroll back through the thread for more info.

Weā€™ve got the soomlab ones recommended by @Princess Fiona above, plus also bought their PF4s. The PF4s go over ears but the AirQueen Breeze attach over back of head with a clip.

Bought our direct but also available from Amazon.

These appear to be in stock again.

Very comfortable to wear and each has a clip so you can wear it round the back of the head instead of ear loops.

Yes there are masks that don't go over the ears. Incidentally these also happen to be found exclusively on the high performance N95 masks on the market. From what I hear from others, your best bet is something like the 3M Aura. The other nice thing about those masks is that if you wear glasses, they won't fog them up on you either.

I wear a 3M Aura for 10 hour shifts at work. There is absolutely no way I would voluntarily wear it on a long haul flight.

Having annoying done this a lot latelyā€¦ I find the basic surgical masks are the best of them. Fairly light, arenā€™t heavy to breath through and easy to replace regularly. On a 10-12 hour flight Iā€™ve been going through 3-4 of them. Seems less gross than reusing one.

A properly fitted N95 will not fog up glasses. The whole point of a properly fitted mask is to filter out the virus. All of the airflow is through the mask and not out the side (which cause glasses fogging). Surgical masks are again a waste of time - they are not designed to be a filter as the airflow is substantial around the mask - hence these masks tend to fog up glasses more.

Note the incongruity in the picture in my above post. All that PPE but the person is wearing a surgical mask!. That person protects every inch of the body but the entry point of the virus.

Havenā€™t we established that itā€™s all theatre anyway? I think the goal is to make it as comfortable as possible until the BS is dispensed with.

Many airlines have pretty significant isolation in business class long haul - far more than say in an elevator in an office or apartment, or just sitting next to a coworker. It's a bit silly, isn't it?

Especially when the air-con does not work well and you can hardly breathe in them.

Norwegian and SWISS are two European airlines that have or are dropping the requirement to wear masks in flight in line.

Sensible move by governments and airlines!

About time this 'control' by Australian governments ceased. They ought be listening to the former Australian Government CHO, not the various State Government equivalents.

Remember we kept plastic knives on flights long after others had gone back to metal. Even the Foreign Minister at the time (Vanstone) complained but it didn't change for a long time.

Two tiny countries! In the US masks are mandatory for airports and airlines and well enforced at every stage of the trip beginning at checkin. The only time you get to drop your mask - momentarily - is for TSA ID checks.

In LA and SFO almost 100% were also wearing their masks outside of the airport buildingsā€¦. for example walking between terminals or waiting for rides.

Removing masks = good news

Amazing how Stockholm syndrome has set in.
