Fog in SYD

I think I was lucky, my flight from AKL this morning was only delayed by 40 mins. Came in around 10.10 in pretty poor visibility but the landing was excellent. Now waiting for one of the many delayed/cancelled flights to CBR..

Currently in the SYD QP, after my diversion to ADL on QF24, waiting for my new flight to. . . . . . ADL.
Was nice to see the sunrise over the airport, but sleep dragged me back under and I didn't wake until the turbulence hit us as we descended into SYD.

At least I'll get some decent time in the QP - new flight now 2:30pm departure. :)

Yours was an Intl flight which may have had additional complications, but..

I was on a PER>SYD red-eye flight that diverted to MEL due to fog. Luckily we were one of the first diversions so they managed to get us to a gate to de-board. But they wouldn't let passengers who were ultimately bound for MEL to leave there itself. No get back on the plane fly upto SYD then make a connection back to MEL..some lateral thinking in such a situation wouldn't have hurt. Not sure why those passengers where on the red-eye flight to SYD anyhow..but thats not the point.

Re-fuelling diversion, then found out that the fog that had cleared, had decided to return, so we topped up with a lot more so we could take a holding pattern if necessary.

Kudos to the crew, who kept us well informed on the delay and subsequent re-scheduling of flights, and supplied whatever food they could find, along with gallons of water.

These things happen - all part of the travel experience! ;)

If you don't have checked in luggage, and don't mind losing the SCs/points, then I would definitely consider taking the bus instead.

A passenger can not choose to separate themselves from their luggage. Also, I assume that if a single pax didn't reboard they would need to security clear the aircraft to make sure nothing was left behind before letting anyone back on.

I think it was Dave Hughes who had a similar situation. They were diverted to Avalon instead of Mel but were unable to get off. They were annoyed because it would have been quicker to drive than wait for the flight to take off and get back to MEL.

Luggage is already checked through, but if not that would make sense. Would probably get to CBR quicker. :P

But thats what I mean by lateral thinking..ask for passengers to identify if they are destined for MEL, check for baggage etc. The issue is probably that the airport can't resource up at such short notice for such incidents for ground crew, gate crew etc.

It's a tough ask, with a dozen extra planes parked in MEL. I don't think they have many spare gates for such uses either. Besides, they'll still have to re-clear the plane and further delay the SYD-bound pax.

Sitting in the SYD Flounge waiting on QF63 to JNB, around 4 hour delay...at least the Bollinger is going down well!

Re: BNE popular for diversions this morning.

I'm sitting in the DRW QP waiting for QF843 to SYD which is delayed by 1:30. Got a $15 voucher for the terminal even though eligible to enter QP.

As we are now boarding at 1620, I wonder if there will be complimentary beer and wine on board as per below for departures after 1600?

Delays always happen when I am heading home from work, never heading up to work! Can't help the weather though

Now which outlet of the TWO are you going to spend that voucher at! Enjoy the wedges.

Re: BNE popular for diversions this morning.

Yes. Decisions, decisions! I just bought a couple of drinks for the two hour drive home from the airport. Only valid day of departure or else I would have saved it for something for lunch when I am back up here in 5 days.

The wedges are good, much better than the packet chicken noodle soup. The DRW QP must be the worst in the system for offerings given how full it gets

Must admit the wedges are a first for me when I had them Saturday, as was the soup which was soon regretted. The DRW QP still leaves the CNS QP for dead, who would appear to be unable to use an oven.

Re: BNE popular for diversions this morning.

Arrived at VA MEL Lounge at 10.50am, hoping to get on 12pm flight.
No chance.
Now my original 2pm delayed to 2.40pm

Re: BNE popular for diversions this morning.

QF414 was originally 8am departure.
Boarding started 9am, departure at 10am & arrival at 11am.
Could be worse I guess...

Re: BNE popular for diversions this morning.

Sat on the tarmac for 40mins this morning in Sydney trying to depart for Mel at 7.30 this morning. Mel was parked out with diverted flights being parked on taxiways around the airport.

As you would expect, there was a fair bit of chaos with the SYD-CBR flights this morning/afternoon. Most were delayed and at least one cancelled. People kept asking the poor lady at the gate 16 desk if they could move to an earlier (well later than originally planned, but earlier than the flight they were booked on) flight. Most were told no, it's not possible. This surprised me as my flight was only 3/4 full when it left - it would not have been too difficult to move a few delayed passengers, particularly is travelling only with hand luggage.

For quite some time everyone was frustrated, staff and passengers alike.

Was on QF22 today with a connection to MEL.
Being HLO, I was able to get off at BNE and change to a BNE-MEL.
There were a few others also HLO who did the same and a few with the final destination as BNE (win for ORC!).
The CSM was talking with one of the ground supervisors about one person of a couple wanting to do the same but the husband had bags checked in his name and the wife didn't with both on the same booking (or something to that effect). Long story short, it would be too messy so it was a no go for them.
First time in the BNE J lounge. That place was packed!!

Status run? Direct flight more expensive?

I also received a $10 voucher on Friday for what was supposed to be ~1 hour delay.
