iTWire - Telstra rolls out free broadband for Qantas Club members

..This month, however, Telstra has quietly begun offering the service for free within Qantas lounges. Users who connect to the network are now greeted with the following message: "You are eligible to use the Telstra Wireless Hotspot service if you are within the coverage area of one of Telstra's designated wireless hotspots in a Qantas Club Lounge. You do not have to pay for this service." Users who access the service elsewhere within Australian airports will still have to pay, however..

Noticed this in MEL QP Sunday just gone. I honestly thought it was an "accidental" thing, so didn't mention it. Certainly no advertising of the change.

Stupid of me not to consider that Qantas and Telstra would happily provide wi-fi access for free, really!!

There is;

I was there on Saturday and they have stickers on the Monitors and on the partition as you walk in to the mini Business area with 3 PC's.

These stickers contain account name and password details for the WIFI. Same for the AKL Domestic Lounge. :idea:

Too right! Over the last year I've stayed in hotels where the costs for in-room Wi-Fi vary from free (Cape Town, Abu Dhabi) to ripoff levels (50 pence per minute, UK). I will definitely vote with my feet to avoid being gouged for a business necessity.

Hotels in Australia ? They are bad but would you believe in Singapore where there is lots of free wireless and even govt supplied free wireless hotels seems to think chargeing over 30$ a day is OK. I can't believe it but i have no choice. (If i sit at starbucks for free internet for long enough it costs me more in coffee and wont be able to sleep)

Even budget motel chains in the US have free wireless internet.

I have checked into motels here that want to charge up to $10/hour for broadband. For that sort of money I'll battle with dial-up.

In my experience, in the USA its the budget chains that will have free wireless internet, and the higher up the cost ladder you go the more you are going to pay for the internet access.

I agree. A good comparison is in room movies. In an expensive hotel you pay through the nose for them. Whereas, at a cheaper US motel, they will likely have free HBO, or in regional Australia you can expect free Movie 1.

All goes to show, you often get what you DON’T pay for!

Interestingly in China, the Chinese owned hotels provide free & fast broadband (and sometimes a PC in the room), whilst the Western owned hotels charge like wounded bulls for slow broadband.

I emailed QC 2 weeks ago (24 March) asking about this exact same issue. I received a reply 8 days later (Monday just gone) which stated:

Thank you for your email dated 24 March 2007 regarding the Qantas Club.

At this stage there are no plans to introduce free wireless internet
connection in our lounges for our Qantas Club members.

However I have passed on your suggestion to management for further
consideration.

Oh well. Now I won't have to go through the hassle of pulling the network cable out of the back of the Business Centre PC's

hehehe yep, but who is to complain now as i sit here using the free wireless in MEL international QP drinking a HP. (Actually Blue Tongue Larger at the moment)

Users who access the service elsewhere within Australian airports will still have to pay, however..

There's a fair amount of signal leakage from most wireless access points, so a non-QP member who happens to be nearby the access points outside the QP may also get access

I call my manouvre the Hotel Shuffle where it is always worth a try to search for free local wireless network ourside of the hotel.

NM is going to have a heart attack at the thought of doing business over an unknown wireless network but in my case, the business risk is low.

In Amsterdam there is a free wi-fi network citywide.

My personal belief is that mor epeople should throw open their non-business wireless networks.
