General Coronavirus chit chat thread - non-travel specific

The mental health issues of Covid are very well known in the Health Departments Federally and States. That is why just this morning Hunt announced signficant funding for a Covid Mental Health Programme. As has our State Government.

And unfortunately many parts of the economy have been destroyed. To think otherwise is really burying ones head in the sand.

And my two points are not mutually exclusive.

Feels a case of too little too late, as you say the damage is done. I know someone who is struggling a lot atm and even just taking things day at a time is too much for them. I don't hold out much hope they'll see 2021.

I agree it's a massive concern for NZ (and I suspect soon Australia) as we reach effective domestic eradication.
(And i think that's defined as no domestic community transmission - overseas returnees going into quarantine don't count)

But while there might be pressure from the tourism and education industries in particular to open the doors, think most everyone else (mindful of the work everyone has done in near eradicating the virus) is going to be extremely reticent to open the doors to visitors from countries where the virus is still spreading

(Particularly while we don't have a vaccine and immunity isn't proven)

PM Ardern this afternoon, in response to a local (NZ) question said that Australian eradication was not going to be necessary for her to approve Trans-Tasman travel. She even went on to say "because if, say, we get 5 cases here, we wouldn't want things to stop just because of that". Sounds remarkably sensible. Was I hearing things?

If Tasmania can continue case-free, then maybe island-to-island could possible for interstate travel. I can't see Tas premier Gutwin being against that!!

And WOW for the stock market today 🙂 XAO back to April-May 2019 levels. At this rate I might be able to have a peek at the Super sometime. Yeah, the market will go back again, but so far, like the virus, its a better recovery than I expected.
It's been a very scarey place in there. But much better than it was around mid March.

Well I had a peek at my super and i am nearly back to all square.Been spending too long researching Covid and not stocks. It appears that one of my gambling portfolio has actually found gold and a lot of it.Going to let it run as a free carry as I sold some to give me a guaranteed 200% gain a couple of years back.

The last 2 days have been almost normal for me. Yesterday, trip into the Uni Library (but space needed to be booked, temp taken etc), went to Bunnings to get some fencing materials, lunch at take-away etc.

Today, back into the city to visit Tas Archives (first day re-opened, needed to book, get escorted etc); haircut, visit blinds shop, then dentist in the afternoon, coffee with friends afterwards.

Friends staying with me this weekend; hopefully some fishing done.

Great to see that State Library and Tas Archives have done some long-overdue re-organisation, cataloging, digitisation projects while they have been closed to the public.

BUT .. Dark mof_ and the Winter Feast were supposed to be on about now. :(😭

We have been feeling almost normal as well. Mr FM has resumed photography with models, but they are doing outdoor shoots (seriously its winter!), rather than using his studio. Games have resumed, although we still aren’t allowing our friend who is a school principal to come - I have told him I might lift that restriction at the end of July. We had a dinner party last week - went for 6 hours - I think everyone was feeling starved of social company. Went for our usual visit to Bub on Monday and my sister-in-law and her husband was there - first time they have visited the new Bub!

For those thinking mental health issues have been overstated here, sadly they ain’t.
Lifeline calls 'unprecedented' during pandemic
Lifeline is taking about one call every 30 seconds from Australians suffering loneliness and anxiety on the back of the coronavirus crisis.
Almost 90,000 calls were received during each month of March, April and May – a record for the 57-year-old mental health support organisation.
“We were overwhelmed with loneliness. And anxiety,” Lifeline chair John Brogden told the ABC this morning.
The imposition of social distancing and self isolation measures had a major impact on mental health, as did fears of job losses.

Yes, and my belief is that we are perhaps fooling ourselves that we have got through successfully. Worldwide Covid numbers are still increasing, America is experiencing increasing numbers in many states so aside from NZ and locally don't think we will be travelling anywhere soon.

The news is all about business opening up but walking down the street in Crows Nest near me there are plenty of shops permanently closed so there will still be plenty of people out of work in 2/3 months and into next year.

Yes, my view is that we are on the way up, but I think people (and the stock market in particular) are overly optimistic on the speed of that recovery. My view is this will be a long slow recovery, not a snap back.

Is anyone finding that their dreams have changed too? I know I often wake up with my heart thumping & feeling really anxious quite a bit these days.

A week ago though it was fairly self explanatory, it was because I wasn't allowed to board a plane because I was 'late', but it was Jetstar and they didn't properly check me in on the first leg (this was the 2nd leg I was denied boarding for 'not checking in').

Was I really anxious and upset because I couldn't fly? Or because I had to fly Jetstar? ;)

Jetstar = Nightmare !!

Interesting however, that I was feeling anxious because I was being told I couldn't board a flight even though I had done everything correct e.g. OLCI, turned up on time, had my passport etc.

I've actually had a very similar one before, so maybe it's like that early morning flight anxiety where you worry about not waking up in time, forgetting your passport etc. Amazing what the mind can do, it can even sometimes help you try and process what's going on 'in real life'.

Speaking of mental health. One method MrP uses to detox is a workout at the gym. Which of course have been closed. Today his gym opened for bookings. He has booked for an hour workout tonight, Tomorrow night, Saturday morning, Sunday morning, Tuesday evening and likely Wednesday when they open up. Phew. I am one happy camper 😉😂

Yes! I dreamed I was in a hotel room on Tahiti. I knew there was a beautiful lagoon view out the window, but I couldn't open the curtains to see it. Then I got a room change and they put me in a 'room' under the stairs in the fire escape, which for some reason did have windows but so high up I couldn't see out 😂

Today his gym opened for bookings.

Judging by his post on the gym FB page, he enjoyed going back 😂:p I'm looking forward to going to my usual class tomorrow.

🤭😆
I think that's the first time he has ever posted anything positive on Next Gen website - (although admittedly he never posts there but does answer the service questionnaires very honestly and upfront) and he mentioned he had last night decided he needed to do it - but you found it! Parking was a breeze. One thing that he did find weird but decided not to mention it was that there was no hand sanitiser nor paper towels near each piece of equipment.
😂

Many years ago when I was building silos in Europe, I built quite a few on farms in Denmark, mostly pigs, but a few grew minks as well. On these farms they weren't kept in my opinion in a very good environment, small cages etc. Ethically at the time, I didn't give their living conditions, including that of the pigs a second thought, now I hope I have more understanding of treating animals better. It certainly has made me think more about where and how our food is produced.
I won't buy pork raised in Denmark, or other high density facilities for any animal, those piggies, minks and others don't have a particularly good life imo, but of course ymmv.

Just heard on the radio that several of the Melbourne mass protesters of last weekend have tested positive. Will be an interesting test case of outside transmissablity (assuming they were infective at the time of the protest).
