General Coronavirus chit chat thread - non-travel specific

Good to hear that the NHS is starting to mobilise with Excel Centre in London being converted and named NHS Nightingale with 2 x 2,000 bed wards.

11,700 retired doctors, nurses and medical Professionals recruited.
plus
5,500 final year medics
18,700 final year nurses

and an appeal for 25,000 volunteers across the UK to assist pharmacies, GP surgeries and local social care staff with tasks.

now for some PPE !

So........ asking staff to work from home where possible, but then asking them to not VPN in to the corporate environment. So how exactly do they work from home effectively? Unless they're using a lot of SaaS applications (which again are probably SSO and require connection to the Corp environment)..... 🧐

I've never, ever, ever wanted to go on 'that' sort of a cruise. Now I really know why (as if it really took any convincing )...
I managed with a lot of difficulty to get Mr FM on the Antarctica cruise. He has spent the last month saying “see I told you cruises were a bad thing”. I will never get him on another one. :) :)

so has the infection rate in aus slowed down from its exponential trajectory>?

This is the biggest "elephant in room " question in au atm.
It's possible to make some guesses but only a change in the daily rate will be definitive
Reading between the pr lines of the public statements , it seems they estimate a hard lockdown is required, probably over the weekend.

You know what? I ❤ cruises. But we were just saying last night, we might have finished our last cruise. We may do the small boat (35 pax) one through the Greek Islands and a similar one on the Nile next December (2021) but anything larger than that, and no go.

... and all the discussion about cruises on AFF in the past got me to finally ask my Virtuoso Travel Agent to show me a range of cruises to areas I might be interested in. E-mail with about 25 possibilities.

I had just started reviewing them all when this sh*tstorm hit. I guess I can delete that e-mail now. :( Small boat cruises still attractive, but I doubt I'll be able to afford them now 😥

Well yes, there is the $ too. On the other hand, life is short, maybe we dont need to worry about living to 90 anymore.

BIG States NO & small States, likely yes

You can see NT, Tas aren’t even to 100 - both were very very bothered by population profiles
SA held the line yesterday so it’s not completely certain if we have slowed progression (with 10 tourists and 5 winery workers holed up in the Barossa) plus other outbreaks in country regionals (from international returns)

The only positive from the chart is we are slower than the euro States so there’s some hope there

Here I am in Brisbane, with a view of the airport.... normally I enjoy watching the fairly constant stream of jets coming and going. But yesterday I became aware of a silence....no more distant rumble... and I looked up and could see nothing in the air. For long periods of time.... 10 min intervals. Here is a screenshot I took from FlightAware... 6pm on a Wednesday which is usually peak hour. Note the plane about to land is a private jet, and the one coming from the south is a VA flight from MEL (people scrambling home before the border closure no doubt!)

This whole thing is so depressing. Also, now that India has gone into lock down too, we are beginning to realise the short-sightedness of off-shoring most of our IT too.... when this is all said and done, I really hope for some kind of enquiry as to how we got here.... nothing but corporate greed really. Maybe the silver lining is that we will be forced to train Aussies again to do the things we sent away.
