General Coronavirus chit chat thread - non-travel specific

Is it feasible or compassionate to totally self isolate ?
@amaroo you state you still deliver items.....you can sit at the front and chat a bit ?

Ok husband and I are fine , missing son and family and if we are required to lockdown due to health issues we will and can
We have limited contact and currently only for essential reasons
However , for example , my late parents .....my mind boggles at all the things that could have gone wrong if we couldn't have seen them often. Mum had a very nasty dementia (Lewy bodies) and physically was fine (she could run well ) dad no cognitive issues but housebound.
Dad fine online he was deaf but mum....
I just worry about these scared people who all of a sudden have noone popping in to say hello or something
Ok I am waffling but.....I really worry about those who for whatever reason find this so so frightening and don't have anyone and ...perhaps housebound
I don't know I just wonder if lockdown is cruel ?

It is cruel but necessary. But as I keep telling my mum there is a thing called a phone. As long as there is an ability to use a phone then there is contact. Red Cross also have a daily calling service for the vulnerable if that helps anyone.

Both sets of parents live independently, that makes it infinitely easier than aged care. We do the shopping, place the bags at the door, back away and have a chat. Parents quarantine the goods for three days and then restock the pantry. Rinse and repeat.

.....

Am I the only one who is frustrated that our politicians seem completely out of touch?

My speculation is that the slow response to heed the call of the political types, by the majority of the Australian population, including things like Bondi beach last weekend, is a natural consequence of the low esteem most politicians are held in nowadays. For the past maybe 15 years, the political class have consistently fallen in 'trusted profession' type surveys, to the point they're somewhere down near used car salesmen (and lawyers??? 😁), or maybe that should be those who recline their seats in whY during meals 🤬.

I think this is sort of an overall expected response: if a (large?) proportion of the population either deliberately ignore or doesn't trust what politicians say (and there's no overwhelming coherent message from them anyway), people will carry on doing what they want.

Now, I think the medical profession has been on point throughout, but even with the CMO and colleagues appearing on TV, generally it's with or after a political talking head. And I believe that has unfortunately drowned out or tainted the message.

Fortunately we appear to be getting somewhere now.

I say this as a voter who has voted for many different parties and individuals: they're mostly a group of idiots!
Many will have entered the profession as honourable and nice people, but somewhere between the party system, the taste of the 'largesse' or benefits, the influence of the lobbyists, or even just the extended exposure to the genuine zealots and psychopaths, the formerly normal people seem to do far too many compromised things.

Yes, we get what we deserve... unfortunately some of those actually suffering from the C19 virus as well as those who've recently lost their income are suffering because of the performance, or lack there of, of our political class AND their more recent predecessors.

My 2.4c worth... (for when the gst is jacked up to a 'temporary' 20% to pay for the current emergency spending)

It has just dawned on me. No one is talking about Africa. Why?

Ah, because the Western media will be focussed on the West. Only Africans are talking about Africa. And with less international travel to and from Africa th3 impact is delayed. But not by much.

Here’s an Update
Africa Is Bracing for a Head-On Collision With Coronavirus,

it’s pretty much the same as the rest of the world, economic calumny, debt crises, lockdowns and so on. Misinformation is rife. Reported case numbers and deaths are relatively low, but so is the ability to test and count. It’s in almost every country in Africa.

Keeping in touch with my Somali Friends. Like many other countries, they’ve taken up the drawbridge, but that’s going to seriously hamper their ability to respond. Damned if you do, damned if you don’t. They were sending tests off to South Africa, with a four day turnaround. Not sure what they’re doing in that regard now. If Haj is cancelled or severely truncated, which I’d expect is likely, that spells bad news - the Somaliland economy partly depends on livestock exports to Haj.

Can someone tell me why it’s a great idea to make people go to polling booths tomorrow in Queensland (legally there is a fine for not voting).

Especially when democracy has been closed down with parliament suspended for six months!

Haven’t they heard of Tele-conference?

I would not go. And make a deal of being fined. It's ridiculous.

I wonder how credit card providers will deal with customers in
- dealing with delinquencies
- application of penalty rates

i guess applications for cards will be scrutinised more closely

..... Without sounding cheeky, maybe some of us with connections in other countries where PPE is in good supply could buy them for us and send it back...😉
...

I admire your dedication, but what countries have "good supply" of anything needed to combat COVID-19?? What all my associates tell me from afar is that their countries are truly stuffed also? :(

We voted last week.
