General COVID-19 Vaccine Discussion

Well NZ obviously feel Pfizer is superior, as they have decided to order enough for everyone and wait for that delivery, despite having other options available.

It cant be cost, because AZ is less expensive than Pfizer and has lower transport and storage costs too. There must have been some advice to come to the decision to spend more and wait longer for Pfizer over others. Otherwise why wouldnt NZ buy AZ and get it sooner?

From ABC:

New Zealand will buy additional COVID-19 vaccines, developed by Pfizer Inc and Germany's BioNTech, which will be enough to vaccinate the whole country, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern says.

The government has signed an agreement to buy an extra 8.5 million doses, enough to vaccinate over 4 million people, Ardern said, adding the vaccines were expected to reach the country in the second half of the year.

"This brings our total Pfizer order to 10 million doses or enough for 5 million people to get the two shots needed to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19," Ardern said in a statement.

The government's original agreement with Pfizer was for 1.5 million doses, enough to vaccinate 750,000 people.

Ardern said the decision to make Pfizer the country's primary vaccine provider was taken after it was shown to be about 95% effective at preventing symptomatic infection.

New Zealand started its national rollout of the Pfizer-BioNTech's COVID-19 vaccine last month and expects to inoculate its entire population by the end of the year.
So basically just using the Pfizer spin from the Phase 3 trial.
Phase 3 trials do not necessarily give a precise answer.Real life experience with higher numbers of vaccinations are much better. And AZ does well in real life as I have linked on several occasions.

And just another reason the Phase 3 trials may be misleading. If the trial is done when numbers of positive cases are rising you are more likely to get an accurate result than if done when numbers are falling.

@Pushka - there is a thread in flyertalk written by c-w-s about "what if you have a phobia against needle injections?". Worth reading for people like your son (as well as me and some of my relatives). Here is the link - Coronavirus / COVID-19 : general fact-based reporting - FlyerTalk Forums. [PS - I have never met c-w-s, but when we lost our first dog in London at the end of 2012, he offered to have our dog buried on his farm as he has buried some of his dogs there, but we decided to cremate our dog and will bring the ashes home when we fly home this year.]

Some more vaccine developements. For those with a needle phobia Finland is aiming to develope a nasal vaccine.

More on the Israeli results.

Fully vaccinated individuals in the USA can gather indoors en mass with other fully vaccinated individuals without masks.

Did you note in those 2 articles on how the vaccinations were being done?

An Indian covid vaccine has good Phase 3 results.

US travelling well

16m jabs under the previous administration and 77m jabs under the current administration

61m (about 18%) have had at least 1 jab, including 32m (9.6%) fully vaccinated.

Though the smaller states in the US are doing a bit better than the larger states.Or North v South.

And we are not alone in countries slower in vaccinating. Many haven't even started and travel won't be back to normal until a large % of the world's population is vaccinated.

Though Greece is hopefully opening up to vacccinated folk from May.

Unfortunately that info isn't quite right as I have friends in those West African countries who have had the jab...

Sigh....potential Moderna concern???

People die sadly. And not related. Just like blood clots present every day.

Yes blood clots really are common.Although I work usually work in small regional hospitals I would normally see 2-3 people a week with blood clots. They are even more frequent in those with cancers. If you see a blood clot in an older person you should test for cancer and often you will find it.
These are exactly the people who are being vaccinated initially.

A couple of other vaccine related pieces of information.First the EU has authorised the Janssen vaccine

Not so serious but with mRNA vaccines there may be delayed local reactions.

Liver failure in a person without pre-existing illnesses (ie a.k.a. otherwise healthy).....sounds a bit more significant.
Maybe it’s my age (older) but people die suddenly. And we all wonder why. No reason for it. I’ve had three in the last 6 months.
