General COVID-19 Vaccine Discussion

I understand the PM getting the vaccine because that shows confidence in the health advice that this is safe. I perhaps understand a member of the opposition getting the vaccine, to show bipartisanship.

But the news tonight had six or seven politicians and high-ranking Cth public servants all lining up for their jabs. At some point it begins to look less like confidence building and more like jumping the queue. 😷

LONDON (AP) — The European Union’s drug regulatory agency said Thursday that the AstraZeneca vaccine is not linked to an overall increase in the risk of blood clots and that the benefits of use outweigh the risks, paving the way for European countries to resume administering the shots.

Several European countries had suspended the use of the vaccine over the past week following reports of rare types of blood clots occurring in a small number of the millions of people who had received the shot across the continent.

Germany, France and others had said they wanted to wait for the European Medicines Agency’s determination before deciding whether to resume using the vaccine.

“Our scientific position is that this vaccine is a safe and effective option to protect citizens against COVID-19,” said the head of the EMA, Emer Cooke.

Glad that pathetic and sorry excuse for a sideshow is now put to bed.

Agree. The PM and the CHOs are all we need to see getting it to instill a bit of confidence. No need for premiers or any other Pollie to get it. (Including the female one who got it the other day to encourage women to get it... Pretty poor excuse)

What a surprise, suddenly the EU says AZ is completely safe and effective.... Not associated with any blood clots. Benefits outweigh all risks. Mass vaccinations resume en masse.

Must have got their price discount ;)

Younger women planning children or breastfeeding are a key part of the group concerned about having the vaccine. If we are thinking of politicians I think a better example might be one of the current Federal politicians who are in the appropriate age group.

Yeah, that can happen when you threaten to unilaterally seize not only the production but the production facilities. Who was the last one to do that in Europe?

From today's Australian on-line:

Iceland is now going to let vaccinated tourists enter.

India is turning out to be a major manufacturer ov Covid vaccines.

And Fiji is now rolling out the vaccine.

Especially when the accompanying media fanfare says that they're all getting the scarce Pfizer vaccine which I personally think should be going to aged care and health care recipients, not to politicians and their lackeys.

Not a good look the way they publicized Marshall receiving his second shot when less than 500 were being done each day. And many in 1a still waiting for their first. We all knew that it would be happening at 21 days, we just didn’t need to see him getting it with all the PR stuff.

Well China will allow residents from some countries including Australia entry to China in limited circumstances but only if they have been vaccinated...........with a Chinese made vaccine.
Yes, @Cruiser Elite mentioned that last week on the China thread.

Post in thread 'China - never a dull moment!' China - never a dull moment!

Not at this point of time for this little duck ...

I mentioned about a month ago that I'd heard that not all vaccines would necessarily convey the same freedom of movement with a vaccine passport and that it would not necessarily be solely a function of the quality of the vaccine - that politics would definitely play a part. I can see that China's decision has been met with derision from some of the AFF crowd - I wonder if it'd be the same reaction if the EU made a similar call?

Well the EU can try to ‘cancel’ Astra Zeneca vaccinated people, just to get back for Brexit, as they have been happily tottling along these past couple of months.

They can’t decide if they need Astra Zeneca or not. There are too many ties across the ‘Western’ Hemisphere.

The other interesting point is unvaccinated children - teens are still a risk of carrying/spreading the virus like an adult.

That's one of the reasons that there is at least one trial of vaccinating children.

Another reason is that if too many adults reject the vaccine, vaccinating children could be needed to reach herd immunity.

From what I understand the issue isn’t “cancellation” but freedom of movement. But by all means, scoff away...

Well the indications so far are that the only ones they will accept for test free travel are AZ, Pfizer and Moderna so ..... But I'd say it's more a case of whatever ones have EMA approval will be the ones accepted.
