General COVID-19 Vaccine Discussion

With today's QLD COVID community transmission, McGowan's afternoon media announcement is cough COVID swabs for all incoming passengers through Perth Airport, backdated to last week. Just to be sure, and to keep all Western Australian's safe.

Masks optional for the swabbing staff as WA Health still don't believe they are really needed  😂

Covax has started deliveries to countries in need but deliveries will now slow as the majority of supply was coming from India which is now using it's production in India.

And the major producers of Covid vaccines.

Situation is worsening in Canada which looks like it’s accelerating into its third wave.

Cases and hospitalised numbers climbing again.

And all their EU vaccines are now blocked and the only other country they were getting vaccines from India, has now stopped exporting as well to focus on their own concerning new double mutant strain that is spreading there...

Canada cannot produce its own vaccine and now will have to try and secure a dribble of doses from the US coming in if they are lucky...

Over the last 14 days the U.S has had a rise in new cases of 11% but a drop in deaths of 31%. I assume that this is possibly a sign of the effectiveness of the vaccine in not stopping infection but reducing its severity. Of course it could be the time lag between infection and death and the death rate will rise again over the next couple of weeks. They are currently vaccinating about 2.5 million people a day.

ABC News reporting that the UK is planning to give all over 70s a booster shot for new variants in September this year - taht will be 6 months form whe most got their second Oxford dose.

Though most over 70s only had their first dose of the Oxford vaccine at the of February. So their second dose will be in May.

In reading this I couldn’t help thinking again about those people here and elsewhere who are complaining so bitterly about vaccine rollout in Australia and how the governments have handled the pandemic. “ Slow“ and, “incompetent “ seem to be the words frequently flying about.

Canada is very much like Australia geographically, socially and politically ( I lived there for a few years). I don’t think Australia is doing too bad at all...

I'm on the fence. Just 255 vaccines yesterday and not sure of today's in SA. That simply isn't good enough.

But the local Oxford vaccine will be fully rolled out from tomorrow I believe.

It’s been a lack of vaccine - supply should really get going this week and onboarding of GPs is staggered over the next few weeks as well. I am very hopeful of 500,000 a week by mid April. Canberra is doing 500 to 600 a day Monday to Friday with around 300 to 400 at the weekend.

edit During the week South Australia seems to do around 1,500 a day.

Though most over 70s only had their first dose of the Oxford vaccine at the of February. So their second dose will be in May.

So the booster is coming in within 4 months, which would imply that vaccine protection is quite short lived, even the annual flu jab is usually good for 6 months.

Will be interesting what they announce re boosters here, I can see younger people still waiting for their first dose in October being quite upset if older people get a 3rd booster dose first.

It certainly doesn't imply that the vaccine protection is short lived. It implies that the oxford ( and Pfizer and Moderna )are not as effective against the SA and Brazil variants.
As to the length of protection no one knows yet as basically really only 3 months experience of real world vaccinations. The Phase 3 trials were far too small to be certain.

We also don't know how effective the vaccine will be against further mutations. Having a booster shot that does a better job against the SA and Brazil variants may also do a better job with any new variants that develop from those.

It’s tough when they have to manoeuvre around all the corpses piled in the streets.

A bit of perspective, perhaps?

We are exceptionally lucky to have vaccine production facilities in Melbourne. Exceptionally.
