General COVID-19 Vaccine Discussion

Just checked my street. No corpses.
Oh then I wonder could it possibly be the case that the initially measured pace of the vaccine rollout is absolutely no problem whatsoever and a lot of people are just making a fuss about nothing šŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļø

It is a problem because the OS drops of AZ evaporated and the local production was not ready to fill the gap. Iā€™m not sure anyone could have predicted the blockade...

Apparently next couple of days local production will hit clinics so letā€™s hope the logistics are sorted and the GPs can actually do their job now.

Guess if you donā€™t mind being hamstrung by snap border closures until vaccinations reach an acceptable level, or enjoy the doona, then yes.

Not sure why you would even be on a travel forum when right now travel is fraught with such risk. šŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļø

Gosh havenā€™t you noticed? Phase 1a is rolling out, phase 1B has commenced ...
Golly gosh and gee whiz. šŸ¤£

Our leader(s) chose not to rush the vax and this is where we end up, yet again.

I'm on the fence. Just 255 vaccines yesterday and not sure of today's in SA. That simply isn't good enough.
Slow and incompetent some would say. Oz has dragged the chain on this, unfortunately.

Which was entirely the right thing to do.The countries who started early had a crisis -including Israel. We did not.

And if you want someone to criticise why not the USA.30 million doses of the Oxford vaccine sitting in a warehouse unlikely to be used in the USA and they have not allowed it to be exported.Brazil has asked and the reply- maybe in a few weeks.
Several tens of millions more doses waiting to be bottled.Despite that Canada is running out of vaccine.

Johnson have asked if 10 million doses of their vaccine could be loaned to Europe as their production has deen delayed.Permission refused.

Surely they also for us divert a million dosesof the Oxford vaccine to PNG.

Iā€™m referring to the lack of urgency by our government in taking delivery. It was made clear that there was no rush. This has nothing to do with how well, or badly, other countries have performed.

That quoted article in your post is either incorrect or out of date. The US has 7M doses of AZ (not 30M). Also, it is planned to release 4M doses to Canada and Mexico, combined.

The remainder of the AZ ā€˜stockpileā€™, waiting for final approval, wonā€™t go very far seeing as how the US is now reporting 2.7M doses being administered per day. Yes, thatā€™s right. Per day. And on track for 200M doses administered in Bidenā€™s first 100 days in office.

But you totally miss my point. We did not have a Covid emergency so why should we be entitled to taking from those that did.

Our government did nothing to provide itā€™s citizens with the vax as early as it could have. The argument at the time had nothing to do with the needs of other countries. It was presented to us as being a cautious approach. In fact, the term ā€˜guinea pigsā€™ was even touted when referring to those in other countries.

Why bring the USA into this? Surely people can have an opinion on the speed of one countries roll out without the need to comment on others?

And I don't accept the "we didn't have an emergency" as being the reason not to pull out all stops. We have never used this as a strategy in the past to delay any kind of immunisations so why use it now? We are heading towards winter. And we never know from one week to the next what will happen. Plus, not sure about other states but in SA we therefore didn't have the processes set up for future use. eg it was only last week that tenders were sent out for mass vaccination clinics, yet the tenders gave people just four days to submit their tender, as whoopsie, we left it a bit late!

UK now forecasting to have fully vaccinated all adults who want it by end of June.
I don't see how when most <50's still haven't even had their first shot. The timeline doesn't stack up? I can't see all 18-49 y/o's having their first shot in the next few days, which would then enable 2nd shots to be completed by the end of June. Vaccinated means a full course, so perhaps you mean the first jab by end of June?

There is a lot of waffle here implying that the UK and the USA are the countries that define the status of the Pandemic.
Today the world tested positives ( 630k) was back to January levels, the graph is (to me) quite chilling , others may have pink glasses to placate any doubts...
Here is todays graph.. the trend isā€¦ sigh.. why am I botheringā€¦.

The government had arranged for the Pfizer and Oxford vaccines to be delivered from January 2021.That was in the contracts they signed.By now there were meant to be 3.8 million doses of the Oxford and 1 million doses of the Pfizer vaccine delivered. So your premise is wrong.

The other countries had only Emergency Authorisations for the vaccines at first. We did not have an Emergency so the right Health decision was to wait for the Conditional Authorisation. There have been many vaccines and drugs who have been used under Emergency Authorisation that have not gone on to General use because of problems.Remember the FDA in the USA gave Emergency Authorisation to HCQ.

Our government was too slow in ordering the doses. It was made quite clear that this was a deliberate action as we were not in a rush and would delay so as to watch ā€˜guinea pigsā€™ overseas.

Why was it too slow. The agreements were for supply from January 2021.
The Emergency approval for the Pfizer Vaccine was only on 11/12/20 by the FDA.
It was granted conditional approval here on 25.1/21.

So how could ordering earlier mean it would be delivered earlier.Sorry but you are still wrong.

Whether it is too slow or too fast, I am at a loss to understand why those working in the Covid ward of a major hospital dealing with positive cases amongst returning travellers have not yet been vaccinated and thus now result in another community transmission outbreak.

Go as slow as the agreements and supply will permit, but not prioritising those working in quarantine roles above all others... am I missing something here?
