General COVID-19 Vaccine Discussion

Yes, I do live in Perth and consider Perth is the best place in the world right now Covid wise. I've had my 2 shots and want to get a booster if possible, maybe next year.
The thing that scares me is, how does WA ever open up to the rest of the country? Realistically Victoria will be in the same position as NSW eventually, whether through failed efforts of containment or an admission of the reality that is the new and changing COVID variants. WA does have a significant advantage of no shared land border and very few (or none) cross border communities.

I reckon for WA people, the push will be for international travel being so close to Asia, and not interstate so much. Can't have international travel if state borders are slammed shut.

UK reaches the 75% fully vaccinated milestone.

More than 75 per cent of the UK adult population has received two jabs

Reporting by Jack Hawke
The UK has reached a vaccination milestone, with more than 75 per cent of adults receiving two jabs of a COVID-19 vaccine.
According to the government, some 39.6 million people throughout England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have had two doses, while 47 million people have received a single dose.
The UK began its ambitious vaccine drive on December 8 last year, with 91-year-old Margaret Keenan receiving the first ever dose.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson said the milestone was a "huge national achievement".
"It's so important that those who haven't been vaccinated come forward as soon as possible to book their jab — to protect themselves, protect their loved ones and allow us all to enjoy our freedoms safely," he said.
However, the UK also recorded its highest daily total number of deaths since March 12.
Government figures showed 146 new deaths within 28 days of a positive COVID-19 test on Tuesday, bring the total death toll to 130,503 since the pandemic began.
The UK has seen 622 COVID-19 deaths in the last 7 days, which is 15 per cent higher than the previous week, but still well below the 8,000 weekly deaths being experienced at the start of the year.

Did they mention most of the deaths and hospital admissions are people that are not vaccinated? Probably not, they likely left that little gem out of their native.
Yes. Sunnies. It’s summer time there!
You'd need sunshine ☀️ for that though.... 🤭

I think that the vast majority of the reporting makes it clear enough that severe illness and death is rare amongst the vaccinated, and that the vast majority of the severe illness and death is amongst the unvaccinated. Though short grabs like the article above may not expand on it adequately enough.

Unfortunately "herd immunity" does not seem to be kicking in at the hoped for levels (particularly if one adds those that have had Covid19 (Reportedly say 20% in the UK - though this will overlap as some will have been vaccinated) to those now vaccinated), which just means that it it is even more vital that as many people as possible get vaccinated. And that one does not want to be unvaccinated if one is likely to be exposed to Covid. Which once Australia enters the living with covid phase, we all will be sooner or later.

Another little piece outlining the effectiveness of vaccination in preventing serious illness. This is from yesterdays Singapore Covid Update.

"There is continuing evidence that almost all fully-vaccinated individuals do not suffer serious disease when infected, unless if they had underlying medical conditions that made them more susceptible. Over the last 28 days, the percentage of unvaccinated who became severely ill or died is 8.4%, while that for the fully vaccinated is 0.8%."

This is NSW, the CHO advises, not makes decisions as is actually required per the Westminster system. We might come back to the question of who's living in the best situation in a couple of months time, as its pretty clear NSW will get to the 70 and 80% threshold way before Queensland so your gloating may be premature.
I’m not gloating. I’m stating the obvious that even with the actions of other states, NSW were more concerned with attacking other states and learned nothing from previous experiences and has condemned NSW and the rest of Australia to this new uncontrolled delta outbreak. YMMV.

NSW were more concerned with attacking other states

Guess you havent watched a WA or Vic presser lately? That were all the sniping is, the NSW pressers are more concerned with what is happening in NSW.

Moderna has proven safe in adolescents - 12-17 with 74% being 15 or younger.

And another article suggesting those who have had covid have higher antibody levels after vaccination.

There is a vaccine being developed in SA University but funded by US because Australia didn't want to, and which is entering phase three trials overseas. Their research was based on SARS so it's been researched for years and based on protein so old type. Current studies show that the vaccine is effective against all strains, but significantly, prevents transmission. If trials proceed as expected then it will be made available later this year. But currently, not to Australia.

Well as an old style vaccine presumably it would be much easier to make here than mRNA. If it passes the stage three trials it could become the favourite to replace AstraZeneca as the next locally manufactured vaccine.

He has been interviewed over the last few months on our local radio station and tv. Has a great reputation from peers. He did ask for Aus funding but it was denied so he went overseas. As a talk back station, callers afterwards were saying they wouldn't have the current vaccinations but would take this in a heartbeat. But I'm thinking it won't be made here unless Aus comes to a deal.

Professor Petrovsky has gone on Sky News to talk about the Finders University vaccine multiple times e.g.
A few months ago Starting 4:32 into this clip:

Very hopeful that this could possibly be the best vaccine yet, but obviously we need to wait and see how the remaining trials go. As we've seen with the UoQ vaccine and false positives for HIV, and the concerns over very rare side effects with AZ things can go wrong.

Has a great reputation from peers.
Well proven success in the past with other projects he's worked on would be a key part of that.

It's not in the above clip, but I think he did mention it in other interviews.

Which is a problem. This vaccine may yet fail, won't be available here till at least next year sometime one would think and the best vaccine to have is a safe and effective one you can get now.

But I'm thinking it won't be made here unless Aus comes to a deal.
If it passes stage three trials and is proven to not only be safe and effective, but not too difficult to manufacture, I think they'd be crazy not to do a deal. Not as soon as we'd probably like, but I think they will seriously consider a deal if it passes stage three trials.

I know. I was cringing at the time thinking - what about having what we do have - NOW! It didn't do the current ones any good.

It really takes the whole "buy Australian made" a bit too far, don't you think? Some people just can't be helped. God (or another higher power) save them.

Unless you're part of this church.............

Im sure we will find a way to destroy it (again) 🤪

Well, they can pray if the catch it - instead of going to the doctor or hospital. Why look for medical help when you've rejected medical prevention.

They are unfortunately the same as the majority of the Anti-Vaxx crowd.
As soon as junior comes down with pneumonia, otitis media, UTI or something more serious eg Leukaemia or a lifelong illness like Diabetes they want all of the medicines.
Big Pharma is good if your kid’s life is imminently on the line but bad if it’s preventative medicine.
