General COVID-19 Vaccine Discussion

Not sure why you're quoting me, unless you've succumbed to lyndastrawman disease.

But why try to tweak one's personal and societal survival strategy for the "longer term" when
(1) The difference between first-dose and second-dose protection is huge
(2) Leaving a longer gap leaves you exposed that much longer in the meantime
and
(3) The booster rollout might not be botched as badly as the initial vaccine rollout, in which case the "longer term" is vastly less important than the here and now?

Get everyone to their second jab as quickly as possible, then sweat the refinements later.

Don't let the perfect be the enemy of the good.

And don't believe that pissing on the bacon makes the lettuce crisper or the bread tastier.

And let's not even mention the tomato.

¡Ay, caramba!
No strawman - just referencing your answer regarding the 3 - 6 weeks in the question asked.

I agree with 2nd dose as soon as practicable - hence the "Not that some have the time" preface.

It was to point out that if one "has the time", then that research shows 12 weeks provides for longer lasting protection than 3 weeks.

Just a data point:

GP at my local clinic yesterday stated that they are staying with the 12 week gap for AZ as we have no cases where I live. If there is a local "outbreak" then they will contact patients and bring the second dose forward (to a minimum of 4 weeks).

Sounds like you have a good GP … when I was working we had experience of contracted vax schedules for overseas travellers such as aid workers who could not have the time before leaving. Like all things in medicine it’s all about risk-benefit and communicating it well. Stay safe

…. And it’s my lockdown project to get it fixed before we get to travel overseas where the date of birth on vax proof matching your passport will be critical

Any ideas would be appreciated - next step if another week of not getting through to Medicare - will be letter to fed member…

Have a feeling it will take as long to fix as it will to get on a plane for overseas holiday
The good news is you have 5.5 years to sort it out.

CHECK YOUR COVID VACCINE MEDICARE CERTIFICATE:

Hi AFF family.

I am fully vaccinated and happily downloaded my Covid vaccination proof but found month of my birthday out by one month

….so went into myGov and found medicare had my date of birth similarly one month out.. how? For how long? Given I’ve used it the card for years ++++ and it has always functioned .. ???

now the fun begins .. you cannot change it online ..must ring Medicare … I rang Medicare repeatedly (but ‘we are not taking calls due to volume abd cuts out’)… having been ‘in the profession’ a call to the doctors line of Immunisation Register revealed they can’t do it or even put me through to a section of Medicare that can (but kudos to the operator who did try but computer said no) ..she did reveal many calls about thiS very problem…..

so….every call to Medicare still no luck…incorrect vax proof even though I am fully vaccinated … wrong Medicare DOB …

I am raising this so that the group check this has not also happened to you

I am in a similar position. I have a first name and a middle name and on my Medicare they are reversed so that my first name as per passport appears only as a middle initial.
I have tried multiple times to ring and same response as you.

Yesterday, I was talking to a 62yo Norwegian friend who hasn't had her first vaccine yet. She wants Pfizer as AZ is banned in Norway so she can't visit family in the future. She would also be happy with Moderna. My local GP vaccinates 40 - 60 yo with Pfizer. Hopefully, Pfizer will be open to all ages soon.
Can't imagine that's correct.

They may not offer it to their own population, but it would be accepted as a vaccine passport.

Otherwise they'd be stopping moat of Europe and the UK from holidaying in Norway

My 21 year old son says most of his Northern Beaches friends are getting AZ (as he did a couple of weeks ago). The only concern is the longer lead time to be double vaccinated. Many of them are rugby players and I imagine would be quite comfortable with a tiny risk of AZ complications.

Pfizer for that age group will likely be 8 wks anyway (as it is currently for the 16-39s from the worst LGAs)

Its only a few weeks more now with the Pfizer interval increasing, and AZ efficacy lasts longer which is a bonus now too. Good on them for doing something about it.

Like AZ, research has shown Pfixer provides longer lasting protection with a 12 gap than a three week.gap.

If you are in NSW then go for three weeks, if in WA then 12 weeks may be an option.

The ones I've met are great young men and women but I think it's a drive to be part of getting to 80% and having their normal lives back as soon as possible rather than altruism (or youthful recklessness 😀)

I think the OP's friend is confusing the decision by Norway not to administer AZ, it is not a ban on the vaccine itself. Norway recognises all European Medicines Agency approved vaccines, which includes AZ, Pfizer, Moderna and Janssen. There is a lot of info on this including high trust resources like www.regjeringen.no and www.ema.europa.eu.

There is a separate issue about Australian produced AZ not automatically being recognised in the EU/EEA (seems to be country specific) but it is likely to be sorted prior to any ability for Australians to travel freely again.

Of course it will be - it was just being used as a scare tactic by a certain Pfizer rep to drive up their profit margins further ;)

Not correct, i know multiple 16-39s who got Pfizer in the last week at Qudos and their second dose is booked for 4 weeks. 40-59s still at 3 weeks via hubs and GPs offering Pfizer, still doing 3 weeks. 8 weeks is the maximum not typical wait.

If booked in for 8 weeks, you can also bring forward if appointments are available.

Whatever motivation works is fine with me - the end result is the same if people just get vaccinated for whatever reason personally drives them. I wish the advertising and incentives were more nuanced to realise that people are all different and will be moved by different things - and that does not matter at all. We should only care about the outcome - jabs in arms, and not too much if at all about why they rolled up their sleeve that particular day. Unless of course the motivation info could be harnessed to encourage even more to get vaxxed!

The US is getting a lot of fake vaccine certificates printed in China.

Another study re the declining efficacy of mRNA vaccines this time in US nursing homes.

Bell's palsy added as a side effect but more common in the Moderna vaccine.

And if you are an old smoker it is likely the vaccines will not produce as large an antibody response.

Yay! Common sense, this is what I had said all along - for BOTH vaccines. But it is also your responsibility to be proactive when you hear it on the news OR you have a procedure or operation coming up. or a family member returning from the knife and fork job shop. I don't trust certain hospitals or quarantine hotels at present, with leakages and whatnot. But the medical maturity of allowing a pz or Modena injection after the initial AZ is still not approved, even if the postcode changes to postbox red.

I’m all for incentives - my only issue with this is the uploading of your digital vaccine certif which QF says they will delete. Why not have the draw, and pay out on the prize upon proof of vaccine within X days of draw. If the winner doesn‘t, then redraw.
