General Medical issues thread

A family member has just been very lucky yesterday. He chewed two aspirin tablets and was driven to hospital as he had chest pains. He has a stent now in what is referred to as the widow maker artery. Saw him this afternoon and he was looking ok.

Lucky it was a Friday so there was a business partner nearby. He took him to a local hospital and after tests had an ambulance ride to a Subiaco hospital.

Interesting - but seems out of touch with what the consumer needs? At least for me. I dunno... do people actually measure out and eat 1/4 of a cup of breakfast cereal? Most people would pour out a fair bit more than that. A chocolate bar is designed to be eaten in one go... why make it 2.3 serves? I'm pretty sure the labeling suits manufacturers, not consumers :(
we make porridge from rolled oats and yes use a measuring cup to take it out the container, so we have the same amount each day. Most nutritionists feel you you would be better off eating the breakfast cereal box than the cereal itself - although some are better than others :)

we are not paranoid about measuring, but where I don't have a feel for a particular food, I will weigh or measure. E.g. Having just learnt what a serve of fruit really is, I will be weighing for awhile until that beds down. When we turned 50 we found we were starting to put on weight, so became more conscious of monitoring portion sizes. Really love food, so need to be careful.

That measuring cup means a lot to me.
The difference between a cup of muesli and what I might slop into the bowl = steady weight gain -v- steady state...

Our family breakfast of choice every morning - unless I'm travelling when I'll actually have a cooked breakfast to break up the monotony. But we don't measure, but as we measure the cat's food, perhaps it is something that I need to start doing as I'm approaching the big 50. Still, regular exercise helps keep my weight constant and the endorphins flowing. Plus a Bordeaux glass of red wine (and sometime two) every night - the fill level depends on what kind of a day I've had ;)

Sore throat and on Roxythromycin for 10 days but the side effects of the infection still there the past 8 days. Got soaked playing golf Monday morning and quite cool there the past couple of days. Returned yesterday morning and now back of the throat is sore again everytime I swallow. Feel like tonsillitis again.

This is February-March all over again.

50 seems to be the start of the downhill .....We could eat what we liked (within reason), prior to 50, but from then on it became harder with each passing year. :). Alcohol seems to go straight to the hips, but that is no reason not to enjoy it.

[In general]Treatment of sore throat with antibiotics ignores the fact that bacterial causes are not the most common cause of pharyngitis. Viruses are the most common cause, bacteria less so. I really think good old penicillin is the way to go but only after a swab confirms GABHS (group A Beta hemolytic strep). Usually a swab will return a result in 1-2 days. I do think too much antibiotics are prescribed for this condition unnecessarily. The only thing with penicilin is compliance because it requires 4 doses per day for 10 days.[/In general]

JohnK, if not getting better I would suggest getting a throat swab.

Mum always said that one day my hollow legs would fill up!

You seem to self prescribe yourself many courses of antibiotics. Your gut flora must be out of whack.

Bugger, that rules me out then:

[h=2]Can I take part?[/h]You can take part if you're an Australian resident, 40 to 74 years of age, and have never been diagnosed with cancer.

Damn it, I've had cancer :(

About to lose a client who found out 3 weeks ago he has metastatic cancer throughout his chest. He had a tumour removed from his lung many years ago and also had prostate cancer about 5 years ago. He has refused treatment and now in palliative care. Been able to organise his affairs for him with his niece (next of kin) as he never married or had kids. It'll be sad to see him go but he has accepted his demise (as he was a heavy smoker until ~15 years ago).

Oh good, I still have a fair bit of time to start worrying then ;)

My other half and her friends say mid 30s though...

not from our experience. In our 30s and 40s we were able to go on holiday, indulge and lose it all in a week when we returned to normal eating. These days, every kg put on is a battle to take off again. I had Ms FM when I was nearly 40 and didn't find it any issue to lose the weight. Of course every metabolism is different. I have started sprinkling Nori flakes on our soup. It seems to be quite good at kickstarting the metabolism :).

very sad - all so random isn't it. There was a lady at our kids primary school who used to smoke and I used to have a go at her, until she told me her Mum had died from lung cancer at 40 and she had been a non smoker. Sort of cut the ground from under me......

Was rolling around the couch last night during the report of Tas Councils trying to revert the mandated fluoridation of water back yo an individual council decision so they could offer their constituents greater freedom of choice. The report said that many of the anti-fluoride group demanding the right to protect their children from state sponsored medication by fluoride, were smokers.
