General Medical issues thread

I've noticed myself saying "what did you say" more often so hearing test booked on return from Thailand.

Better blood test results as I upped my exercise, lost a bit of weight and reduced the fruit I eat. Only 2 red markers on the blood analysis to work on over the next 3 months so I am happy that the trend is my friend.

With auto immune diseases the aim of the treatment is to dampen down the immune system. Echinacea is purported to ramp it up so it works against the medications.

Thanks for that Pushka. Since I have Crohn's, it's worth knowing.

I have when I was younger, relied on echinacea. Always seemed to work too. Nowadays, the only reason I have none in the house is because I forget to buy it and hubby is a bit derisive about my penchant for supplements. (fair enough too, for the most part, except I have been tested and know I have deficiencies that do not go away by themselves)

I thought fruit was good for you. Did you reduce the quantity or the type ?

I have had to forego grapefruit since starting on statins some years ago.

Hearing is a huge minefield where promise often triumphs reality (after they have your money… )

Flat losses are manageable with aids , but the more common high end drop off is difficult to ameliorate .
Audio's tend to be in two camps .. selling hearing aids… and selling hearing aids with some applied science and a lot of hope...

I can still recall making a boozy proclamation to my mates that in a noisy world I would choose to lose that sense of the seven if one was to go.
Not at all sure that was the right call in hindsight.

A high fruit diet puts a big load on your sugar processing systems .. caveat emptor

Grapefruit is a no go for the heart medication I take. I lowered from 6 pieces of fruit to two or three so I have an apple,a pear and a mandarin and I will probably drop the pear next.
It is nicer not having six red markers on my quarterly blood tests and the remaining two are close to black now.
Unfortunately my new doctor has a Slim Jim body shape and he replaced my more amply sized cardiologist who has retired.

My hearing must be bad. I was in a hifi store looking for some speakers and I let the salesman indulge me in a listening session. I could not discern the nuances in sound between a cheaper speaker and a very expensive speaker. He even tried to sell me a power filter which improves the quality of the electricity coming to my amplifier suggesting that it substantially improves the quality of the sound.Either my hearing is bad or he is making it up. Possibly he believes in the hype. In the end my spend was 3 figures.

The message used to be five serves of fruit a day but that's changed to vegetables. Fruit contains a lot of sugar.

Yay, just had my last visit to the F.C., scaphoid is ok, now to get back on the roof and complete what I was doing back in early March. :)

Yes Pushka and that sugar worked its way into one of my blood readings.

Boo. But not uncommon. Hopefully diet will shove it right out. That's why getting on to things early is a great thing.

I've been trying 4 fruits for lunch spaced around an hour or so apart and hasn't worked for weight loss.

The Australian Dietary Guidelines have advised 5 + 2 since at least 2003 - being 5 serves of vegetables and 2 serves of fruit.

4 serves is at the upper end of recommended - and more for people who are very active (ie athletes). They are still a source of carbs and sugar (albeit naturally occurring) and thus will impact on weight loss if consumed in excess of recommended levels.

It's also going to depend on what fruit you're eating - berries/ cherries/ passionfruit are some of the best choices.

Unfortunately hearing loss goes with age. I remember when I was about 25 someone who was about 55 saying that by the time one could afford real hifi speakers you couldn't tell by listening that they were really good speakers. Very sad really.

Mandarins are in season and we are eating heaps of Imperials. Bananas are also fairly cheap at the moment.

And the other downside is I am not allowed to turn up the volume knob past the 10 o'clock position in my own home!!!. Surround sound is not surround sound without high dynamic range. I was told that it's bad for my ears...... :(
