General Medical issues thread

My Dad was hospitalised 2 months ago. First it was diagnosed as pneumonia. They discharged him after 5 days and the day of discharge told it was a "small" heart attack.

After Echo no stents are likely to be required.

They had worries about some enlarged lymph nodes.

Today found out he had prostate cancer which has metastasised into his bones and nodes.

6 months.
Very sorry to hear this WMW. It must be the most devastating news for everyone concerned. Best wishes for whatever the future holds for him and the family.

This may be part of the problem. I have noticed that the faster food moves through me the more weight I lose. Fibre may be your answer.
I only buy Mars and Snickers on special. Does that count?

Agreed that could be part of the problem but I need some junk in my diet otherwise I'll go crazy. I think each chocolate bar is ~80 calories. I don't have chocolate bars everyday.

I am so sorry to hear this sad news. Best wishes.

Thanks for the wishes. He is in his 80's, so not a bad innings at the moment. Chemo not possible due to frailty. Starting him on bicalutamide. Hopefully when I meet the oncologist, we can get him on abiraterone (another Androgen deprivation therapy drug) plus maybe talk about another drug like Keytruda (the new wonder melanoma drug) or some other new drug.

That's a good age but doesn't make it easier. Chemo at that age would be very rugged.

Yes, I know a number of pretty active 80+ year olds. My mother will be turning 95 on Monday and although she has a number of health issues is still living in her own home and has a busy life, just a bit slower than when she was younger.

Another update on friend with stage 4 bowel cancer. He has just celebrated his 61st birthday and is looking forward to going away at the end of the year and having many more birthdays. From the dark days over Christmas and earlier this year, it is wonderful to hear.

Sorry to hear this sad news wmw. I hope that one of the drugs is able to give him a reasonable quality of life. Unfortunately cancer treatment seems to be an imprecise science at moment and one just has to try a course of treatment and hope for the best. My 80yo neighbour across the road succumbed to the same problem in April.

Sorry to hear that. My mum had breast cancer in her late 80s which metastasised into her bones and organs. "Fortunately" she died of a heart attack before it caused her any pain. Best wishes to you and your family.

that sounds very low - a 60g mars bar would be more like 260 calories. I understand your need, as I love chocolate and always said I could never go without my daily fix, but after I ran into high blood pressure issues a year ago, I just went cold turkey and gave it up, except for Christmas. Everyone is allowed to be bad at Christmas. oh and the TPR in Singapore - they had plates of really nice chocolate :)

I am sick again :( :(

Went to a certain medical establishment on Commercial Road which a few AFFers may be familiar with. Have been poked and prodded every which way. Now back home awaiting results.

The good news is I am not dead yet.

Test results are promising, although another couple of weeks on some fairly strong antibiotics to kill the bugs this time. Hoping to dodge a hospital admission.

These are the bite size chocolate bars. 12 chocolate bars x 15g for each chocolate bar.

Very sorry to hear. All the best!

Royce chocolate is yummy so probably bad for you. We have 2 plastic containers of Costco Kirkland chocolate macadamias from the US in our baggage. I might guess they are very low on the calorie count but I could be wrong.

My wife was feeling really bad with coughs and sniffles. Said she had the flu or a virus.

After a couple of days I remembered something - this is August in Melbourne, and we'd had a couple of north wind days.

I got her to take some anti-histamine pills (non-drowsy ones during day, Polaramine at night), and my wife was cured.

I knew to do this because the same thing had happened to me in August many years ago, when after a week of suffering what I thought was a terrible virus and taking Codrals and Sudofeds, I crawled in to see the Doctor. He prescribed some Rhinocort, I sprayed it up my nose, and was cured half an hour later.
Regards,
Renato

Pollen season has come early I think because of El Nino and maybe because of them naughty NSW stealing water from the Murray-Darling Basin. I think it might be a bad season for hayfever. If we get a wet Spring, heaven help our noses.

I love my 2 grandchildren dearly - but my goodness they are little plague carriers.

The day before our Ireland trip we both picked up a nasty cold from them which slowed us down for the first 10 or so days. They both had a stomach wog last week and we babysat them overnight on Saturday. My wife has spent all night in and out of the en-suite and while I haven't been sick, yet, I am definitely feeling unwell, not wanting to eat - a horror for me - and I am sore all over.

To top it off it, is my daughters (their mothers) birthday today and we were supposed to go out with them for brunch.
