General Medical issues thread

I don't know how often you eat, but to me 3 times seems usual. Thais have super quick metabolisms, compared to us Caucasians and also eat more veggies which means that food moves through the gut more rapidly. I have experienced food moving through the gut quickly and believe me the weight just falls off.

Edit: Just saw your post about eating small and often. :(
All I can suggest is trying to eat Thai vegetable type foods.
Not too keen on Thai vegetables but back to trying things again.

English spinach was on sale yesterday so I thought fantastic. Took it home and washed it and boiled it for around 45 minutes or so. Took it out and strained it and squished most water out. Then chop some onion into a little vegetable oil so they are lightly brown, add 2 diced tomatoes, put spinach back in and cook for a few minutes before adding rice. Leave the rice to sit on top making sure the bottom don't stick then mix all together. Had a portion of my spinach and rice and also had a tomato/cucumber salad but by midnight this wasn't enough so had some Jatz biscuits and spoilt everything.

The good thing to come out of that exercise is my daughter loved the spinach. She usually doesn't like vegetables much but surprised us last night.

I will keep trying different things to lose weight. Mornings are now 1 tomato/fetta cheese and 4 olives. Then 3 serves of fruit throughout the day along with ham and cheese. Tonight will be a pork chop with maybe some potatoes and hope that gets me through without snacking.

Jatz biscuits, UGHH, If I eat one I cannot stop. Weight loss is an ongoing issue, I just wish I could stick to something.

Did I read that right? 45 minutes to boil spinach?
Think so. It was a lot of spinach and the English spinach is tougher. Wife and I had spinach and rice last night and she had some for breakfast this morning and I will have some tomorrow so cooked a lot.

Not easy. I couldn't stop either.

I miss the days when I could have a hamburger and kranski for lunch. People used to laugh and say I had high cholesterol which was not the case. Time catches up with us.

Fruit.. sugar. Ham... too processed. Cheese.. fattening!

Sorry but that's all I know.

Love ham. I eat maybe 40-60 gms/day. Very low calories and full of protein. Processed does not bother me. Fetta cheese is great for calcium and zinc. As for cheddar cheese perhaps half a slice/day to go with the ham. With fruit a combination of small apple, mandarin, pear, rock mellon, honeydew, grapes if in season, plums if in season.

I'm sure we have been through this before but regardless - of course you are hungry. Your diet is lacking whole grains and decent protein.

You would be better having eggs for breakfast on some whole grain bread, cutting back on the fruit, losing the ham and replacing it with yoghurt and nuts. Lean protein and green vegetables/ salad etc for dinner. If you need a carb there then add sweet potato or brown rice.

And yes - 45 mins boiling spinach - ugh! You have boiled all the nutrients out of it too.

Agree - protein is filling.

I see so many people at work on those home-delivered diet meals... most of the lunches seem to be salads with a spoonful of meat, or hot mains which are mostly rice or pasta with a tiny bit of meat. They're not really all that low in calories and most of the consumers seem to be hungry again and snacking a short while later. The alternative... a roast chicken breast (skin off) and salad. Filling, high in protein, low in calories, easier than preparing a delivered meal. And no desire for snacking.

Really there is no ideal diet as we are all different including our metabolism. And that is before taking into account our different likes and dislikes.
I find a vegan diet extremely good for loosing weight.Just fruit and a couple of small veggie serves.Do have to add prunes otherwise it is all too hard.;)
Problem is though I am much more inclined to be a meatatarian than a vegan.

Reports of the worst flu season for 15 years.

Australia is in the midst of what is likely to be the worst flu season in at least 15 years, with more than 70,000 people struck down by the dreaded lurgy so far this year.

So far, there have been more than 71,256 lab-confirmed cases of the flu across the country this year. Children and teenagers, aged 10 to 19, have been among the hardest hit.

So you want to be my nutrionist now? My food intake has been reviewed and approved by 2 nutrionists. Not sure I understand the criticism. I don't like grains. I don't like cereals. And I am definitely not a meat and 3 vegetable guy either.

This diet works for me and I have a lot of protein. I will cook 6-7 vegetables into a soup or stew 2-3 times a week. I need to keep calories down. I will do it the way I enjoy eating food, not what someone else does. And I will cook spinach as long as I like.

You shared your diet and frustration at not being able to shed the excess weight you're concerned about.

Hence sharing what a number of dietitians and endocrinologists support for sustainable weight loss/ management and assistance with blood sugar level stability.

But you are right - you have to enjoy what you're eating otherwise it is not a sustainable dietary plan.

Endocrinologists? Huh!

They have no idea. A number of years ago I saw one of the best endocrinologists in NSW. I knew him personally. Not cheap. He said I consumed 2700 calories/day and to reduce my calorie intake by 20% and I'd lose weight. I said rubbish. He showed me his formula and I'd be wasting time thinking my condition was genetic. My GP said rubbish. GP said "John, you and I can look at food and we'd put on weight.".

GP was right. I counted calories weekly for 5 months last year. My counting was conservative. E.g. mandarin that weighed 120gm I included the skin in calorie count which overstates the calories. At 1800 calories/day I lose no weight. At 1600 calories/day or less I lose weight. Any lower and I'd lose more weight but I had to keep eating.

Don't always believe what you read or hear. The experts are not always experts.

For women 1200 cals a day is a target to lose weight. I try that as a goal and check the various calories in food I eat. I tend to stay the same weight because most days I am just north of that goal. The hidden calorie count in food is amazing.
