General Medical issues thread

So I wonder how pre diabetic is determined if sugar levels seem ok? My sugar level is higher than that and there’s never been a question I’m pre diabetic.

Perhaps her HbA1c was or it’s trending upwards? or might have had a pre and post sugar levels checked?

Sugar levels are like a snapshot of what sugars are doing at an specific time.

HbA1c is like a short video of the average sugars over a period of time (6-8 weeks)

Thank you, I’m not sure of that test was done or shown.

So, if say a person has eaten lots of choccies at Easter and then waits 6-8 weeks, it could revert to whatever it was before the binge?

Just wondering if anyone has any thoughts on Diabex XR 500 (metaformin hyrdrochloride 500mg).
In what way? I was diagnosed with insulin resistance over 10 years ago. My sugar levels are fine.

I've been on these tablets twice daily for over 10 years but I've been taking the generic APO brand and can't tell if they are the extended or immediate release tablets. There are no noticeable side effects and they keep my type 2 diabetes in check.

Good theory

If you have a normal pancreas and your insulin is doing its job then, these tests, should be within normal limits.

We have little information , but it would seem somewhat unusual to have a hba1c time line record for a non diabetic as per ICUDr comment.
It seems equally unusual to prescribe a drug for a non diabetic with little historical data.
Pre diabetic is a prediction rather than a disease as I understand it.
The must be more to it .. or…….

Agree. There's not enough information to know why their Dr prescribed Meformin

When you request a glucose screening some path labs adds HbA1c as part of it

Sometimes you just know.I have 2 major risk factors for diabetes and that is not counting my size.:D
I have a peripheral neuropathy which by nerve conduction studies is the same as seen in diabetics.Occasionally my fasting glucose is a little high but my Hba1c has remained at 5.6 for years.I was happy my GP suggested I go on metformin-I was going to suggest it.

Are you allowed to self diagnose and self medicate?

So what are the risk factors or other signs? If blood sugar isn’t always high. I have so much stuff going on with auto immune but I guess that is Type 1?

Doctor has been saying she thinks wife is pre diabetic and has prescribed this. Wife is 51kg, BMI 20.2, fasting glucose 4.8 for recent blood test and the previous 10 months ago, so within normal range far as I can see. Wife is concerned she is taking too many tabs (lipitor and pariet).
I recollect Dr Manny on Fox News Extra some years ago saying that US studies had shown that giving one tablet of Metaformin once a day to poeple with pre-diabetes reduced the onset of full blown diabetes by 50%.

I had thought that pre-diabetes was determined by getting non-fasting blood sugar results of something like 6, 7, 8 or 9 when one visited the Doctor, and he or she took readings on those occasions.

Though on the few occasions I tried taking anti-cholesterol pills, they stopped the Metaformin and other diabetes pills working properly.

Renato

Assuming you are speaking about someone with diabetes, who doesnt adjust their meds in response to the chocsand so has a period of higher blood sugars, yes.
Having said if the chocs have caused weight gain, this might well increase their insulin resistance resulting in longer-term difficulties with control

Should still be type 2.

I was feeling hungry after having a full meal and I was also constantly fatigued. Nothing in the blood tests to suggest any issues and blood sugar has been normal for a long time. Doctor ordered an oral glucose tolerance test.

Dr Google says it’s 1.5 and not 2.

Thanx for info.
Dr (Asian) informed Mrs RK (Asian) that Asians they have a predisposition to becoming diabetic, and prescribing metformin was a safety measure for future possibilities. Recent HbA1c was 6% (42mmol/mol). No trend as this was not previously tested.

Will two sugarless Vitamin C tablets per day change a diabetes 2 score and if so how long will it take to get an improvement?
I am wanting to drop from the 6.2 to 7.0 readings to sub 6.0 and a low dose of Diabex has not changed the number after about 5 months.
