General Medical issues thread

JohnK, the ongoing concerns about your wife's wound worry me. But it's unsurprising that it's getting her down. She's likely in a bit of pain which can lead to low mood. I know it's hard, she wants to look after her baby and enjoy being a new mum. The most important thing will be to make sure that wound heals properly with no infection developing. Keep a lookout for fever and hotness around the wound. Give her lots of love and you need to do whatever is required to be able to stay with her until she is fully okay. I know your work is important to you, but she needs her husband to advocate for her at this time.

Thanks. Most of this was planned months ago and not easy to cancel/change flights to extend trip. My wife needs to focus on our daughter and 17 November.

Sometimes life just isn't a gas but you just have to pass on thru the winds of change and smile. How else could you survive? Sometimes you just run out of tears.

A new gastro strain has been detected in Melbourne, with fears it might cause a epidemic or pandemic.

Using 14 years of surveillance data from Victoria, the scientists who made the discovery say this strain has the potential to become a pandemic in two to seven months.
Gastro often involves acute nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea, transmitted through coming into contact with infected faeces or vomit, person-to-person, through contaminated food or water, or touching a contaminated surface, like a toilet.

If you think this is going to cause anxiety and worry, I think you are mistaken. We breed 'em pretty tough down here.
This is the cost to bear from the odd dodgy dim sim served up in take-away shops all over the place. Snow big deal really.
In fact, I believe the whole episode would give anyone the shi*s.

Got my mother on the waiting list for a knee replacement. She isn't the greatest fan of operations but in the meanwhile the GP has organised some physio sessions. GP told her she needs to walk 30 minutes a day.

Waiting list is two years...

Said that once she was in the system, it might get speed up but then she would get physio sessions in the hospital.

Even if wanting to have a public admission, the trick here in Regional WA is to be willing to go to Perth and pay for the appointment with the specialist who has been doing the local surgeries. Cut four months off since the wait for a local public patient was that long. As there are no private beds, the waiting list is identical for public/private. Waiting list was a year, but the schedule hit Christmas holidays and the surgeons normal holiday so turned into 14 months. Yes having a certain amount of usable (and used) muscle in the leg is VERY useful...(7 months post op opinion)

Happy wandering

Fred

Mrscove got sick on Saturday night with a gastro bug in Sydney on this long weekend. I was very grateful that I could get a doctor to come to our place to get her a shot and some medication. Certainly glad we didn't try the 5 hour flight back to Perth on Sunday. Could have been more than a bit messy on the plane. Naturally I have been a tower of strength under the "in sickness and health" deal.
Surprisingly the doctor was free and the medication he carried saved me having to find an all night pharmac_. Apparently our medical group in Perth are subscribers to an Australia wide GP after hours service. That was wonderful news.
Thank you for coming Dr Tom. He even wrote the treatment in legible hand writing....wow!

Hope mrscove is feeling better now! Having had something that felt similar recently, I can assure you it's not fun especially when travelling!

We deferred on our return to Perth and we are so glad we did.Mrscove may be able to fly tomorrow or Wednesday but I don't want to rush it. She started nibbling some SAOs and is sipping on an electrolyte potion I mixed up for her. The medication seems to have worked.

Bleh, hope not...Im finally making moves to get my nose fixed.

Depends on the specialty. Rheumatologists - good ones take that long IF they accept your referral. They know it will be a long term relationship so their booking space is limited.

Are you off the wagon now Flashback?

More or less! Tummy is a bit icky atm but otherwise OK. Last day in Ecuador, fly out to MAD tonight, a night there (shopping) then back home :)

If you want to see a geriatrician you may need to be 85 or more. Don't rush into getting old.
i went to a party shop to get a 90 year old some party balloons and saw there was nothing past 100 in that store.
Better we live it up now was what I was thinking.

A good news story and glad Mrscove is on the mend. The overwhelming majority of the "Dr to your door" services are not provided by GPs and I suspect the service you received is the same. The advertising for these services is very slick and deliberately obtuse.
I should say that the Drs providing these services are fully registered by AHPRA but in the main they are not GPs and do not have any specialist recognition by Medicare / AHPRA.
