General Medical issues thread

They installed the hand sanitizers in the office so I was using them regularly. Around the same time the skin on my right hand started peeling every couple of weeks. Very painful.

GP put 2 and 2 together. Guess which had to go?

JohnK Are you allergic to alcohol?. That's really bad news.

Im often stuck in the blokes toilet because the person in front of me did not wash their hands when they pulled on the handle of the door to exit. I had to wait for someone to enter so I can get out without touching anything. Sometimes it can be a little while because male toilets are not as heavily frequented as the other gender.

Male QF frequent flyers are also quite bad.

I think it was 6 weeks after I had my 'nose job' done some time ago!

I think that you do need to stop flying for a while? That is the issue for MrP's current FIFO routine and scheduling surgery. At least, that is his excuse for avoiding it.....

I've read ~6 weeks as well. Which means I'm pretty much stuffed for this year, but first thing next year would work (right in the middle of "grant season").

The sprained ankle epidemic continues. Apparently Master FM has now sprained his ankle and it has been put in a splint. Seems a bit dramatic, but maybe it is standard in the US, or maybe it was badly sprained.

I think I can say my ankle is finally 100% healed - I can now flex my toes backwards, without pain - so approx 11 weeks.

Yep, I went into a men's cubicle in a Q J lounge and the previous user had not bothered to lift the seat when doing their pee.

Disgusting, would they do that in their own home?

Not allergic to alcohol as far as I am aware. Well not internally anyway. ;)

I think this hygienic push has gone way too far. I touch things and then eat without washing hands and have been doing this the majority of my life and still alive and relatively unharmed.

As for toilets I wash hands with or without soap and exit with hands wet and then rub on my pants. Someone I know was surprised I do it this way. What's the difference? The bacteria gets on my pants? Last time I checked we sit anywhere without realising who or what has been there before us.

I think the context is important.
P&O cruise strict
Around the house - certainly don't need to have antibacterial this and that. Don't have to spray everytime the dog walks past.
I do wipe down the tray table, seat rest, IFE, IFE remote and do alcohol hand rub more than usual when on airplanes and other public transport

Given the things I see in the bathroom at work, I do wonder...

We have two bins, one with a lid and one without. The one without a lid gets full of paper towel, so people start dropping it on the floor. In the end I removed the lid and now people use both.

I used to wonder why people dropped towels on the floor behind the exit door in public toilets. I'm a bit slow, but now I reckon it is so that they can use a paper towel to open the door and then if the bin is not close enough, on to the floor it goes.

On cruise ships there is either a door that opens automatically or there is a bin by the door for this purpose. I am not a germaphobe but I HATE touching the toilet door after I have washed my hands. It seems pointless given others awful behaviours.

The wait for a good specialist seen privately can be around 6 months.

Why then do we read of elite footballers heading straight off the football field and into surgery for knee reconstructions etc?

In a way yes.

I am not going to bend down to lift seat, pee and then put seat back down again. I will not be held responsible if the seat is wet. Wife knows. Have to teach daughter later.

Can I ask a silly question? Why didn't the previous occupant of the mens bathroom leave the seat down? That's the burning question.

Perhaps something about their contract and the insurance that goes with it? I suspect you don't want to know the cost.

Happy wandering

Fred

Because it depends on several factors, including the specialty. And Football clubs probably pay ortho specialists a large stipend to be on call for them. And private health funds probably aren't involved so Hospital space is available. It is also a workers compensation matter with the clubs self insuring.
