General Medical issues thread

Slight frustration, and it was the same 5 yrs ago with my right foot.
WHY DOES EVERYONE ASK ABOUT MY ANKLE WHEN I'VE SAID I'VE SPRAINED MY FOOT????!!!! ARRRGGHHHH.

OK, got that off my chest now.

7 days after injury. I think the bruising has peaked now. Counting down to seeing the physio this arvo and MRI tonight.

Overdid it on the weekend, too much walking (with crutches) and standing.
Oh dear, it is a nice shade of blue and now turning yellow. It looks very sore. Good luck with the MRI and Physic. And do not overdo the walking even with crutches!

Probably because they have seen many sprained ankles where the bruising is in the same place as yours. Sorry.
This has even been with people who haven’t seen my foot or the bruising.

I get that people seem to frequently sprain their ankles, and I assume that’s why - they remember “sprain” and some lower limb, so think sprained ankle.
Anyway, just having a rant.

An ankle sprain really is an injury to the foot caused usually by rolling the foot not ankle. It tears the ligaments around the ankle.
The same turning of the ankle may also cause tearing of ligaments around the bones of the foot. if you like a foot sprain. The ankle is the more common injury and if severe more time to heal than a "foot" sprain. Treatment is basically very similiar.

So why does this illness respond so rapidly to steroi_s? And it sure is rapid.
It's poorly understood but corticosteroids affect the transcription of pro inflammatory genes in the cell nucleus and also multiple other mechanisms. Some inflammatory conditions have poor response to corticosteriloids and others have very fast response. The difference is likely at the molecular level and probably reflects the differences in the disease process with respect to inflammation and the degree to which corticosteroids affect specific mechanisms of inflammation

It's certainly fascinating.
Have you been AWOL. If so hope all ok.

WHY DOES EVERYONE ASK ABOUT MY ANKLE

the bruising is in the same place
Our TKR patients sometimes have exactly that bruising
They get worried that something happened to their ankles/feet but its just blood tracking between the various layers in the leg and shows up at the bottom due to gravity and also something to do with the anatomy of the various layers such that the blood shows up under the skin there

ankle sprain really is an injury to the foot
I once received a call from a rural hospital who wanted to discuss with the ortho guy about a patient
The diagnosis was a fractured ankle
I said it is impossible to fracture an ankle because the ankle is a joint not a bone.
I asked which bone is fractured, he said the ankle:(

By this time the ortho was available so I just gave him the phone. The fracture turned out to be the fibula.

Husband has mobility and stamina issues due to his brain tumour.
Now we are about to fly Y 😳 with China Airlines.
No status and going over no family just us (that is why Y as large group returning together back to Aust )
How do I find out if china airlines has some form of pre boarding for disabilities? Out of Sydney
Thought people in this thread may know
Or do we just hope for the best ?
It is a very impromptu trip

They do. They are a major international airline. Just contact them 48hrs ahead of departure
But note (not knowing actual condition and current functionality) he might need a medical clearance to travel....
Good luck
He is maintenance mode :) . It is partially removed . It is just he normally travels in business or at least has status with lounge access. This is our first time with no status lol
You know he is also old 😇😇😇
Lol.

Question is whether MrSterryn will want to be in Wheelchair mode :D (at least temporarily)
Wheelchair mode can be restrictive in terms of freedom

That said, Ive not come across an airline that does not do preboarding of one description or another
Thank you.
He doesn't really like having to use the wheelchair but he has been known to use the various airports buggys to get around

Then just have him use a walking stick. In Osaka we were flying to Okinawa for a few days and left our large luggage behind. my walking pole wouldn't fit in the carry on so I used it walking into the gate area. In combination with my grey hair I was immediately ushered into the area for preboarding with my disability.

Ahh thanks . He is on a walking stick permanently outside of the house . Loads of grey hair for him as well :)

walking stick
I'm sure I told the story in these fora previously...

Mrs QS did a comminuted # of the tibia/fibula while at Liyama Japan (near Nagano)

We got her out of the car at the drop off the train station. She was using crutches. Almost immediately a uniformed fellow with cap and white gloves raced out the door with a wheelchair. He checked the tickets From there she was escorted to her platform at the exact spot for her carriage. Then escorted onto train.
At the other end at a Tokyo Station, another attendant was waiting with wheelchair and delivered her to the exact platform and position for the sector to Hamamatsucho and repeat for final sector to HND. And at HND they delivered her directly to the QF checkin.

The assisted transfer from Liyama train station to the QF aircraft door was seamless and did not require pre booking, ringing anyone. Though QF was aware.

At the other end the assisted transfer stopped at the SYD arrivals terminal doors which separate the terminal and the exterior. No the wheelchair cannot go to the P7 carpark. And no unable to wait....Mrs QS says there is obviously something magical about that threahold like in the fiction books where characters don't dare cross over lest something bad happens...

So in the end her pickup had to help her go up to departures kerbside , then he drove from P7 around to departures to pick her up kerbside while getting threatened by the departure kerb dragons....

At what point do you give in and just seek medical assistance? No excess to pay, so that's not really a consideration.

Day 4 of whatever it is I have / caught, maybe food poisoning. Last night and this morning gave positive signs of encouragement.. so started to head out to do a day trip to Blagaj, but nope, just before I got on the bus it was another close call rush back to my apartment!

Mediocre few days with routine optometry and dental check-ups.

I went to the optometrist for some redness, swelling and black eyes I had been getting for a few days. Turns out I have allergic conjunctivitis, not serious, but wonder if it's worth doing some allergy tests to find out what the problem is. In hindsight, it's probably an issue I've experienced on and off for some time. Anyway, he decided to do a full checkup given I hadn't been for a while. Vision has deteriorated slightly, but still decent. He did a routine OCT scan and found I have a nevus/mole/freckle - now down from 3 yearly check-ups to annually to make sure it isn't growing. I'm a little concerned at the moment, but no doubt I'll forget about it shortly and then start worrying about it the week before the next check-up.

Then went to the dentist - routine check-up but had noticed a few chips on my lower incisor. Dentist buffed out the chips, but now looks a little silly (to me, understand no one would notice it) given its a lower height than its neighbour. Not sure if bonding would have been a better solution, but it wasn't offered.

I've had a freckle In my eye for the past few years. It doesn't seem to change. Have to do annual tests now for Plaquenil drug that can cause deposits I think on the retina? And steroi_s. As I have a cataract which will get its marching orders soon. And last week I was at the dentists as I'd cracked a tooth! Number three.....

If you are doing all the standard traveller self-medication stuff, to no effect, I'd go now ( if you'll forgive the expression).
