General Medical issues thread

I loved it when Ron went to the American Heart conference, it is so large only 5 cities in the USA can hold it. The shopping was great !

Absolutely correct. Two of the world's largest veterinary conferences stay in the same place (one in LAS, one in MCO) year after year because they likewise could only be accommodated in 2-3 other cities in the US and conferences of that size book venues five - seven years in advance.

If one of your family " olds " has a fall and hits their head on the ground do get them checked over. No matter if they might say they are ok and are embarrassed by landing head first. Falls happen later in life as ones balance can get to be a problem.

On a more serious note re conferences. In the last few years of my practice I dealt mainly with heart failure. In the 90s there wasn't a separate organisation for heart failure.so when the Americans set up the Heart Failure society of America I joined.I was not allowed to join the Cardiac Society in Australia-not enough letters after my name. Also if I went to an Australian meeting I was generally ignored as I worked in a regional area so obviously not able to make it in the city.
In the US the reception is totally different-I am accepted and respected. When I tell them I work in a rural area I am told that they just wouldn't have the skills to do that without all the backup.I have got to know many of the "experts" personally.
On top of that when I had been a member of the HFSA for 13 years and had reached the age of 65 I was made an emeritus member so can still enjoy all the benefits of membership without having to pay an annual subscription.

And Pushka the number of experts that come to Australia to present is small.Go to an American conference and they are nearly all there.chalk and cheese.

Gee and I'm here complaining that the big annual australian conference in pathology is in SYD this year, instead of MEL as it has been for the last 4 years while the convention centre is being redone.

Think I may have to line up some more subspecialty conferences overseas this year!

Where did you buy that self control ? I need some ASAP, as I have none around Lindt.
i gave up chocolate after my blood pressure went silly last year. I always said I could never do it. My only fall from grace so far was on our trip to Singapore, where I couldn't resist the chocolates on board or in SQ's TPR.

and take up Tai Chi - I was falling flat on my face every couple of months. Balance was totally gone. Since learning and practising Tai Chi daily my falls have stopped. Two reasons I think - they do a lot of work on strengthening legs and posture. I was developing a bit of a stoop, so my centre of balance was all wrong - much straighter now.

Seems to be a common occurrence where a minor fall is the start of the end

And it was a locum who picked up MrP's testicular cancer when his regular GP told him 3 months before his symptoms were nothing to worry about. 
Twas also a locum that picked up my malignant melanoma - I stayed with him for 15 years in private practice before he moved to RFDS Alice Springs.

My family member had their endoscopic Ultrasound yesterday performed by their preferred Gastroenterologist. He had prepared the report before the patient left hospital:

Better outcome then expected but the remaining stone has got bigger so a cholecystectomy is recommended.
