General Medical issues thread

AHPRA requires all professionals in the Health area (Medical Practitioners, Psychologists etc etc) to undergo and sign off on Professional Development each year.

On a completely unrelated topic. It seems that anti coagulation, and lots of walking in covered shoes is not a good thing. Saw something unusual under the shellac toe nail polish this morning so had it removed. Right big toe nail has most of the nail bed with a red and purple bruise and a smaller one on the left big toe. At least I hope the walking was the cause. :o

I have the same problem so only wear closed in shoes at the gym. I change into and out of the closed in shoes in the gym. Luckily, I live in Perth so don't have too many very cold days. I am also on anti-coagulation but the problem had already started before the medication.

I have to be careful with cold - Raynaulds has kicked in big time (fingers and toes go deathly white - even in Coles near the refrigeration section )

But need to sort out shoes better then. This was a first for me and I've had these shoes for a long time.

Well at least April will be warm - sandals all the way.
Not sure what will happen for you in winter - between Raynaulds and the anti-coags it's going to hard to decide on suitable foot gear.

Sounds like somehow there has been pressure on the toes causing bleeding under the toenail. Unless you dropped something on your foot?

I did wonder about the stub/knock thing but it's on both toes a bit. The right toe has bad arthritis and doesn't flex anymore. Did a lot of walking in Melbourne in shoes. Diana Ferrari soft walking shoes but obviously not soft enough. Lucky I bought lots of havianas in DFO!

Remember not that long ago I was a gym junkie? How times change.

Recently was told that one of my good friends has testicular cancer.

He is younger than me - only in his 20s, about 28 I think.

Sucks, although seems to be an early-ish diagnosis, so prognosis is okay at the moment. Surgery next week. After that we will know more.

Re: The totally off-topic thread

A question for our resident Medicos.

How do you keep up with new technology and improved techniques ?

Do you receive regular emails and publications ? Do you have to attend training sessions ?

I assume there are forums similar to AFF where you can discuss treatments, new procedures etc.

I know my GP is always busy and I wonder when he has time to catch up. It must be very difficult if you are time poor.

We have to update ourselves by attending conferences in exotic locations around the world :)

MrP was just 23 when he got that diagnosis. We had been married 6 months and I was 22. And at that time the radiotherapy and chemotherapy was more harmful than the cancer - which really meant it killed men faster than the cancer. So they held off after surgery to ascertain if it was in the blood stream. He already had it spread to the lymph nodes in his abdomen. There is a sentinel node in the neck we were told where it crosses into the blood. That was clear. Forty years ago it was a dire diagnosis but MrP is still here.

It is most likely to strike young men not older ones. And they have made incredible treatment progress since that time.

Had a blood test in preparation to meet my new cardiologist so today I thought I had better go a 100 mg of Lindt Extra Creamy just in case. My other cardiologist put on weight as he headed towards retirement and yesterday I heard from his wife that he had a heart operation post retirement. I do hope he gets a long and successful retirement as he kept many of us alive.

Yes. Like I said before. Junkets. :p

Must be awful when the conference you want to attend is in your home city :o

Didn't touch the Tim Tams as I have developed a little bit of self control. I didn't want to make it into a double the medication day.

I think by pass surgery in 1994 turned off my craving for Diet Coke and Tim Tams.
Dont even think of going double medication days ever....no matter what punishment you give your body.

So wine/champers/chocolate is off the list?
A health scare especially when young puts a whole different slant on life. I know what happened to us after 6 months marriage changed - pretty much everything. A couple of reminders along the way when you slip.

We had a funeral yesterday for my father in law. To celebrate his life of 93 years we did Veuve champagne and granny brought a 4.5 litre bottle of Chivas Regal for the whisky for the younger generation. They mix it with Diet Coke or Coke it seems.

There are NEVER conferences in Sydney that I wish to attend ;)

Last year I had to go to Budapest, Lisbon and Singapore. This year the important conferences I need to go are in Vienna, Toronto, London and Muscat ;)

I come from good Methodist stock so any funerals in our family are strictly cups of tea :(

Sounds like he had a long and (hopefully) fulfilling life. My mother was 94 last birthday and is still pretty busy in her own home.

MrP's mother was conservative Methodist. He seems to have broken from the fold. Thank God. (See what I did there? :p). For Mum's post funeral drinks we convened in the local pub. Niece and I polished off a bottle of sparking in record time. We'd started the 'process' one Saturday morning as she got to the hospital first so I didn't see Mum without company. And we were the last to see her both pre and post passing. Seemed quite appropriate. Then my brother and I finished off a bottle each mostly of Moët on Christmas Day a couple of days later. We are not Methodist. :p
