Gift Cards at Supermarkets

........................ Or, I could effectively pre-pay my grocery bills for 6 months by purchasing gift cards from Woolies. E.g. buy $15k worth of gift cards and get 45,000 KF miles.
Beats having 3,000 loaves of bread in the freezer.

If you buy $8000 worth for $7600 you can pay by Amex to get extra points if you use the good Amex card that has not been enhanced. Also watch the 12 month expiry on those gift cards. If you get your extended family onto this for Woolies fuel, groceries, hardware and liquor you could easily chew up $15,000.
I think I would have charged about $40,000 in the past 12 months so that is 57,000 FF points and $2,000 tax free savings.
By the way I have never seen anyone use a gift card in my supermarket line and getting 5% off Dan Murphy's specials puts a smile on my face.

I think I'm having a lightbulb moment  ........ so when I spent a mere $70 at woolies yesterday to get my targetted double points offer, what I really should have done was bought $2,000 of woolies gift cards, the same of Dan's etc? There was a big rack of gift cards there just staring at me.

Edit: Oh hang on, the targetted offer was EDR. Not same thing?

I'm pretty certain Woolworths Group gift card (wish card etc) purchases don't earn everyday rewards or frequent flyer points. You only make amex reward points, which is the same whenever you purchase.

I use my CBA diamond card. Infact just got 1k worth of cards just then: )

In my edit I was referring to being targetted for a double point earn but then remembered it would only be on the EDR card not my amex. Thank you Sharp for reminding me nonetheless. Next spend at Myer, DSE (who no longer accept amex or charge for the pleasure...can't recall), David Jones etc. will be using gift cards which I will buy at the time for that specific purpose. Don't know if I could trust myself to remember not to misplace $15,000 worth of woolies cards over the course of a year.

For large purchases of gift cards you go through Woolies admin and not the retail store if you are buying more than $8000 worth.
Otherwise join our RAC in WA as an affiliate member for $29 and buy up to $1000 a time for $950.

Just to clarify, I was talking about the Amex Plat Edge, which earns a true 3 FF pts per $ at major supermarkets. So my example would only work if you actually buy the gift cards in a supermarket, it won't work if you buy them via Woolies admin or an RACV scheme or whatever.

I'm assuming whoever is on the checkout in Woolies will have a meltdown if I try to buy $15k worth of gift cards in one transaction, so my plan would obviously be to split it up over several visits!

Or buy your electricity from Lumo, and you can buy 5% off vouchers there.

The topic of this thread however is buying gift cards AT the supermarket on your AMEX (forgoing any discounts).

Yes that works if you run an American Express Platinum Edge card but I am on Ultimate for Qantas points bonus and ATO payments up to July 21st. Everyone can have their favourite card for their favourite reasons.

Someone commented earlier that the Woolies gift cards are useless for this purpose, but I've just thought of a reason why they might actually be useful.

Agree, perfect way to top up points if needed. Wasn't sure why anyone would say its useless 'prepurchasing'.

I guess with plat edge vs discounted gift cards, depends how much 1.5pts per dollar is worth to you.

Most offers will exclude Gift Cards spend.

Always read the T&C

What are people's thought on the pre-paid mastercard's available at Woolworths?

I think it's a $4.95 fee, and then you load it up in multiples of $50/100 ? Would generate 3pts/$1 if that was the case for me. Could then pay bills etc

Can you confirm that you can buy it & fund it with a credit card?

There are two types. Neither can be loaded by credit card...
Single Use: https://www.woolworthsmoney.com.au/...wowmoney/prepaid+cards/single+load+mastercard
It can only be loaded by Cash or EFTPOS: https://www.woolworthsmoney.com.au/...paid+Cards/Single+Load+MasterCard/How+to+load
Reloadable: https://www.woolworthsmoney.com.au/.../wowmoney/prepaid+cards/reloadable+mastercard
This can only be loaded or re-loaded using BPay or Direct Deposit, or in-store by EFTPOS. As such, I don't think these cards are applicable to discuss in this thread.

I tried to buy these with a credit card and they wouldn't let me. You can't load up with XS cards either....

That'll do it! Hmph.

People pay using anything but credit?

Surely the Mastercard would only be 1 pt/$ giving effectively 0.5 pt on transfer to a ff scheme? Why don't you apply for Amex Plat Edge where the earn rate at woolies et al is a real 3pt/$ and 15,000 bonus pts on referral? Alternative is Amex Gold for annual fee of $139 and 30,000 bonus pts on referral. The Gold amex only gives you 1 true pt/$ but the bonus is substantial and I would think the income test might be lower.

Already have the Plat Edge but was thinking of buying the pre-paid gift card at 3pts/$1 then using to pay bill etc...

Think of the permutations! Buy mastercard and use it to buy another, then another, and then.....my god, I think I will be rich. Pity it won't work. ;)
