Gift Cards at Supermarkets

I have read that it is around twice a year. I just did the Father's Day promo. Apparently, there was a Mum's Day one too.

You were lucky to source $100 cards for the Father's Day one - scouring the nearest 7 stores repeatedly (3 in largest Coles store category) had zero. Asking for Store Mgr to 'discuss' lack of cards got no satisfaction as store reputedly cannot order them in but just gets sent what they receive (or don't as the 7 that had previously had them did not). Of those - 6 still have not had any come in since September as I have been waiting to obtain a supply for future (now eventuated offers). The 7th had a grand total of 12 or so cards and several hundred of the $50 ones. All 6 other stores had more than a hundred of the $50 ones as well (before, during and after the Father's Day offer).

This is at least the fourth outing this year for bonus points.

  1. Mother's Day - 1,000 points/$100 C MC gc or 500 points/$50, limit 10 C MC gcs per transaction
  2. Father's Day - 1,000 points/$100 C MC gc or 500 points/$50 (as above) DEBACLE with ZERO supply at 90+% of Coles stores mainland-wide = very unhappy families Australia-wide
  3. October (finishes today) - 2,000 points bonus - limit one card per FB household account.
  4. The two variations shown above - 1,000 points/$100 C MC gc or 500 points/$50 (but only covers $5 fee notionally on the $100 cards)

I suspect the 2,000 points offer was a 'veiled' apology for not having any in stock and still they don't.

Across our family we have received two different offers - it pays to read the fine print VERY carefully.

Sounds similar but not quite...

With #1 you get 105 points plus 1,000 bonus points = 1,105
With #2 you get 105 points plus 9 x 100 = 1,005

Know which one we'll be using...

Note - max 10 cards PER transaction. No limit on how many transactions (other than AMEX cc limit that is).

Now to see if the docket triple points offers pay out on this....

Unfortunate Note - credited 4 weeks after promotion ends so now ability to transfer at 15% bonus rate to VFF (sound of teeth gnashing).

Don't know if this offer has been mentioned.

Last two were for Fathers and Mothers Day. Unfortunately it seems the bonus points will be credited after the VA bonus period ends-should still get the standard FBs in time though

Correction - the M & F days ' offer was 1,000 points/$100

The hunt for $100 cards begins once more....

So it begs the question. The only way to benefit from this is if you have an Amex Platinum Edge card.

For the 1,000 bonus points, maybe.

For the 2,000, like the current promotion, there's a $5 profit.

You can still benefit with some bank Amexes, Business Accelerator and Diners. A Local Champion Edge gives the best bang for buck though

Just spent 22 of the Father's Day promo cards on a mate's tax. Now need to pay the rest ... over to the ATO thread to see which cc to use.

It is an absolute pain to do the ATO. I will only do it in future for a big pay off. A couple didn't work, and it then becomes a big issue to get it sorted out with Coles, and you have no way of verifying if what they tell you is correct unless you have kept meticulous records and receipts etc, as the cards are not reconcilable with anything that we can see.

Yeah the 2000 points I don't doubt just the 1000 I'm questioning.

I haven't received the targeted offer, but I just crunched the numbers out of curiosity, based on converting everything to Velocity points. I have an Amex Platinum Edge and although I'm currently the Local Champion at my nearest Coles, I'm not counting the extra LC points here, since they're capped at 10,000 and as long as the LC promo runs for long enough, I'll reach the cap eventually anyway. So there's 315 Amex MR points ($105 x 3), which at 1:1 is 315 Velocity points.

Assuming that a "3rd Party Gift Card" attracts Flybuys points, there's 105 FB points, equivalent to 46 (rounded) Velocity points (+15% if you were to transfer them before the end of November).

The 1000 bonus FB points is equivalent to 435 Velocity points (but unlikely to land in time for a 15% bonus).

So a total of 796 (rounded) Velocity points. But when I factor in the 0.75ppd that I could get by simply using my Visa card directly in those situations where it would've made sense to use the Coles PP GC, the difference becomes 721 (rounded) Velocity points. Given the $5 GC fee, that works out to paying 0.7¢ (rounded) per Velocity point. Given that I draw the line at about 1.5¢ per point when I'm redeeming, I'd still be in front..... if I actually received the offer.

....and VFF is by no means the MR sweet spot (though they have frequent transfer bonuses)

Not if you are a member of a discount program that sells discounted Coles egift cards.

The points arbitrage opportunities make it much more fun though ;)

Went to 4 stores after work (like the points arbitrage). Found some supply in the second store Coles Wynyard and an eager beaver self checkout attendant wanted to call the manager as I had 'too many'. Was saved by one of the checkout operators who put them through for me.
No supply (plenty of $50s) at the other stores and none of any kind at one store.

The self-serve checkouts only seem to accept 5 GCs at a time

I went a bit nuts with Coles MasterCard offer today. Got about 80 cards today. Had to visit 5 stores, found most of them in 2 stores, still some $100 ones left at Coles Fremantle. Still long way to get to 140 I bought in Mother's Day offer.
