Gin!

I can hear all the Taswegians crowing already, however a mate and I gave the Lawrenny 1818 Settlers Gin a bit of a nudge last night and I must say it is a very enjoyable drop. I'll have to add that back onto my duty free list again now! ;)

To me (which is likely entirely wrong) there was little (if any) fruit to the palette, but a strong dusty, flowery taste which actually works (for me) exceptionally well. I must admit, I'm not into overly sweet drinks and this one just ain't no pink gin! I have no idea what to enhance this with. Certainly any citrus will be counterproductive, I think.

So with all the gin discussions how many people actually are fussy about the tonic that goes with it. I really dislike Schweppes now and my favourite at the moment is the Fever Mediterranean. (wouldn't you have liked to invest $1000 with the guys that set up Fevertree a few years ago).

Someone tried to give me sugar free tonic the other WTF

I've tried Bickfords which was OK but not great.

I'm also to try the Cascade and Capi

I like Capi, but must admit that our session last night was tried briefly on the rocks but the Lawrenny straight, just about removed my rocks so it was relegated to Schweppes.

I'm quite fussy with the tonic, and refuse to use post mix or cheap tonic water.

Fever tree is one of the best, but quite pricey.

I really do love the cascade. Quite often the small cans will go on sale at Dan Murphy's, otherwise I find the bottles of them at BWS to be perfectly acceptable.

I use the Cascade.i don't like much tonic so the small cans are just right for afternoon drinkies.

Mrs AS birthday is coming up and she's decided that she's into gin now, so I'm wanting to get her a bottle of something local.

I know nothing about gin as I can't stand it and I'm trying to decide between these five:
  • The Melbourne Gin Company
  • Patient Wolf
  • Hippocampus
  • Bass and Flinders
  • Cedar Fox
Any recommendations?

I can't say I've had any of those and have only heard of Melbourne and Bass and Flinders (which I might visit next weekend). Good luck and let us know how you get on. I think if she's really into gin at least two bottles would be necessary as a gift. :p

MGC is really good gin, haven't tried the other ones. Four Pillars is high on my list for local.

AS,
MGC is a good gin. One of my favourites is Four Pillars.
Also try (for something different) my favourite - Hartshorn (Grandvewe) Sheep Whey Gin (very tasty!) - alcohol is made from lactose as the carbohydrate. It was the gold medal winner at World Gin Awards 2018. Try some - I guarantee you wont be disappointed!

Seems like MGC is a clear favourite around here! Thanks, I'll go with that one.

For anyone, flying into/out of NZ (Auckland/Wellington/Christchurch) Lotte Duty Free have the following offer currently

50% off on the 2nd item*

Available from 9am AEDT Thursday, 14 February until 12PM AEDT Tuesday, 26 February 2019. (Note while the offer lasts until 26 Feb I have found that on previous offers you can pre-book for months ahead.

Duty Free prices in NZ are already low so some great deals, e.g. Four Pillars at normal price of $NZ 59.99 for 1L is already cheaper than the $AU 68 in Sydney but with this deal you can get 2 * 1L for $NZ 89.98. Bargain considering in an Oz bottle shop it's about $75 for 700ml!!

Well all I can say is I'm lazy. The 4 pilars bloody shiraz 1L was there on the shelf, so I picked it up. Duty free $99 which sounds like an absolute rip off compared to the post above, but I didn't have to go searching for it!
