Has anyone had success with the call-up "Marginal" xASA's?

So I just tried to book a JASA. 1st time, the CSA had no idea what I was talking about and (accidentally) hung up on me. The 2nd CSA said under her breath so you basically want Points+Pay...eventually we got to 72,000 points for the route I wanted.

This was 24,000 points more than the same route in the spread sheet - I asked if I could pay more, and she said you need to pay the minimum classic points value of 72,000 and said I couldn't contribute more $ - has anyone heard this before?

Should I just try a third time and see if I get a more knowledgeable CSA?

short answer: yes

long answer: if it is a "hopping" trip, ie via an intermediate city, then see the posts above about what constitutes a valid route for mASAs. Also be clear that you are asking for "an any seat award in u for uniform class". Also refer them to the right on Q sheet mentioned in this thread. Usually you can tell if the CSO has any idea. Best advice is to hang up and call again if you detect that they are not going to be helpful

Booked BNE-ISA rtn on the weekend and flew it today.

Paid 50,000 and $309.90. Min points was 48,000.

Final stat run and now waiting for double credits to bring me over the line for WP. Booking process was simple as could be. Called on Friday evening and took 5mins to have it all booked and confirmed.

Must be one of those days. I persevered along the lines above and we eventually got there after 1) much debate whether I wanted P + P or a classic award, both of which I could do on line, 2) Right on Q 7740 "was about ASA's" (ding!) , 3) finally, "I'll talk to my supervisor". I was told the two of us needed separate bookings. Then the FF number was omitted from my partner's booking and the confirmation didn't arrive necessitated a second phone call. All up, 45 minutes in two calls but we got, for a round trip CNS-SYD-CBR ,72K per person and $561.10 in cash. I'll list it on the other thread. Points have been deducted and titled Any Seat Award so I am fairly confident!

Yes, try a third time, but that will not necessarily guarantee your desired outcome. Just keep trying and if you are not comfortable with the response then just politely end the call each time.

This lack of knowledge on JASAs at the Call Centre has been going on for six months now.

Also, when they start talking about Points + Pay, that is not what you are after.

So I called back a third time, and this time success! The CSA was lacking the usual 'polish' but she got it sorted for me so I can't complain! Said she hadn't done one of these before but was pleased I knew exactly what I wanted and had the Right on Q reference. She did say she there was going to be a $35 telephone booking charge, but I was out of energy to fight it at the time - I'll see if I acutally get charged it as I haven't received a tax invoice as yet.

If I do, I guess I'll call up again and try to get it reversed. Am I correct in saying there should not be a telephone assistance charge levied on these bookings?

There wasn't much availablity, but I managed to snare a MEL-ADL-ASP-SYD-MEL in J for 48,000 points and $394.20. 220 SC with the double SC offer will get me to gold and on track to WP after a US status run in April.

Thanks for all the help!

The points and $ amount are about right. You are correct in that there is no telephone assistance fee payable. Be it $35 or 3500 points. As these cannot be booked online, the fee is waived. If you have been charged it you will need to ring and have it reversed.

Please note that the credit card fee ($7.70 domestic or $30 international) is payable at the time of booking.

You actually are able to book two people on one booking, and I have not heard of this before. The training goes on...

Just booked the following for a friend
Month booked | Month travelled | Cabin | Route | Points cost | Co-pay* | Classic co-pay~ | Max points cost~ | SCs earned
Dec 13 Jan 14 J SYD-BNE-TSV Ret 48K $349 ?? ?? 200 (400 as DSC)

I asked for U class and he merrilly went about making the booking, then came back with a quote of 51,500 points saying there was a 3,500 booking fee. When I queried this, he said he had booked the classic reward (in U!!). After some discussion, he came back with the 48,000 point ASA quote but said in future to ask for the Any Seat Rewards as Classics are booked in U.

Does anyone know if the statement by the CSM "Classics are booked in U." is correct.

I have asked for an ASA in U class, and 4 times out of 5, I got what I wanted (JASA). However, on the last occasion I got a Classic which took a lot of fixing, even after flying, as although the booking was amended to an ASA (before flying), it posted in my activity as a Classic.

However I suppose 4 out of 5 ain't bad, to misquote Meatloaf.

Yes, my previous telephone JASA was for two pax. It is very hard to believe that six months later so few operators seem clued up.

Just got off the phone to the awesome Crystelle (sp?).

Booked two of us MEL-LAX in PE. Classic award was 144,000 + $914, Any Seat Award was 144,000 + $1157.48

I asked in she was familiar with booking an Any Seat Award in Z class, to which she replied yes. Took my details etc and then said that will be 144,000 + $1157 and would I like to use more points or not. I once again confirmed that this was in fact an Any Seat Award and that there would not be a phone assistance fee to which she said yes to both.

I also fed back that it seems not everyone is not as well versed as she was in booking these and that I had ROQ 7740 reference ready, She just laugh and said gee you know a lot about these.

Well done Crystelle

great result. I think international MASAs are just the ants' pants

The dom cc fee has been enhanced to $7.

Has anyone had any success with doing a mixed Y/J mASA booking on the one PNR? I'm currently on hold and have been for the last half an hour - I'm wanting to fly a mASA TMW-SYD in Y (no J on the Q400 planes) and then SYD-JNB on QF63 in J. There is X class available on the TMW-SYD flight and U on the SYD-JNB flight. However, the agent is telling me that she can't get the system to accept the booking at all.

Is it possible?

Just an update on this, after they sorted it out through the helpdesk, they report that they've got a mASA for the minimum points (84000) and pay for TMW-SYD (Y) and SYD-JNB (J). I'm waiting for my confirmation now.

Yes, classic awards are in fact booked in U class. For that reason it is ultra important to look at your activity statement after you have booked a JASA, as that will be the ONLY place where "Any Seat Award" is mentioned. If those words aren't there your booking has likely been mucked up.

Re: Sucessful ASA Bookings booked at classic rates Reference Guide

Dec 13 | Jan 14 | J | SYD-BNE-TSV return | 48 000 pts | $349.16 + $7.00 CC fee| $97.00 | 86 418 pts | 200 SC (400 DSC)

1. Called earlier this evening. CSR's reply? "You can book these online. There's only Classic awards, which book into Uniform class, or there's Points + Pay." Sigh... HUACA...

2. 3 hours later...My initial request was met with 10 sec of silence. Followed the suggested spiel, CSR seemed unsure, so I also indicated that I wished to make a booking that earned SC. Put on hold for 5 min. Offered minimum of 86 418 points. "Your'e after an Any Seat Award in Uniform class? That's the minimum." I had to gently push, but wasn't until I nominated 48 000 pts & a higher co-pay that the declared "minimum" was able to be brought down to the expected level. Suggested ROQ7740: "Yes, I'm looking at that." I somewhat sensed the process was tedious & frustrating for the CSR, who was also aware the ability to book JASAs online had been removed. Nevertheless, CSR was polite & helpful. (Total call time: ~20min vs <5 min online pre-June 2013; Would call times be of interest to anybody in the reference guide?)

Like those before me, I'd also just like to add my sincere thanks for everybody's generous contributions to the forum, particularly this & the other 2 associated threads.

Merry Christmas!!

Can anyone confirm that I can request an upgrade on an ASA booked into Z class? From my reading it's only classic awards and fares in E, N, O, Q and X classes that are in eligible however if I try and request an upgrade it comes up that my booking is ineligible
