re: Has anyone had success with the call-up method for "Marginal" xASA's?

Mods/Red Roo,

Can we please organise a 'Sticky' post with clear and direct instructions on how to book one of these via the call centre with correct wording to be used and what happens if they try to charge booking fees etc.

As there seems to be several 'methods' but you have to go through a large number of posts to try and find them and every day this thread gets longer and more interesting.

If it was a sticky with detailed instructions and a closed thread the people who don't frequent the board every day could have easy access to the information without going through almost 100 pages trying to find the latest way to book and words to use via the call centre.

If it was official and from Red Roo it would be good too! :)
Cheers,

re: Has anyone had success with the call-up method for "Marginal" xASA's?

I realise that but the wording in the sticky isn't correct and it's been a long time since july and quite a bit has changed and obviously we have to refer to them a marginal ASA's or nobody seems to have a clue at Qantas what the hell we are talking about.

Just would like something official that we can try and follow as it seems there is 100 different wordings and way to ask for one thing!

re: Has anyone had success with the call-up method for "Marginal" xASA's?

Agreed ,I used the words" Marginal Any seat Award booked into U Class " Wouldn't it be just so much easier to do it online..

re: Has anyone had success with the call-up method for "Marginal" xASA's?

Pilotdude09, as referenced by kalboy, the sticky is there with the wording that Red Roo actually suggested.

The term "marginal" was coined in a teleconference between industry reps and QF, but it is not intended for use by the Call Centre staff - it has been introduced by AFF callers and has caused some confusion - the term "Classic" is the one understood by the Call Centre staff (as is the term "U class" as it is a designated fare basis).

If this whole saga wasn't real, it would be hilarious.
Easy to forget you are supposedly dealing with a top tier airline. I wonder how many irish jokes are being cracked internally over this one.

re: Has anyone had success with the call-up method for "Marginal" xASA's?

I would like to report success with booking the ASA formerly known as JASA. Rang at 7pm last night and got 2 x bus class fares to Cairns on the days we wanted and at the Classic Awards rate. I did my prep work by checking Expert Flyer for availability and when I saw there were heaps took the plunge and rang the number. I was a bit nervous because I didnt feel confident arguing with staff should any queries come up. I referred to the AFF sticky for the number to ring and what to ask for. The man on the phone was lovely although did try to convince me a Classic Award would be better as it was much cheaper. I insisted on ASA as I wanted the status credits. There was much typing on his part and lots of holding my breath on my part as I dare not interrupt the booking process.
Now I'm looking forward to finding Nemo on the Great Barrier Reef very soon! Another bonus is I will reach Platinum after this trip which I'm also pretty chuffed about.

re: Has anyone had success with the call-up method for "Marginal" xASA's?

Strictly speaking a bit OT but I managed to successfully change an existing JASA booking via telephone today. HKG-BNE-SYD in Jan. Due to a schedule change I was going to be faced with a 5 hour layover in BNE. Saw that there were two J seats available as Classic Awards on QF8 and rang up the Platinum desk and we were changed over. CSA had a joke with me about "QF Late" and how we may get a telephone call in HKG bumping us to a domestic service ;)

re: Has anyone had success with the call-up method for "Marginal" xASA's?

First time trying to book a MASA (a simple one way MEL-SYD in economy). Agent was clueless and told me to book it online. Told him everything I could and he finally read ROQ 7760, put me on hold for 20 mins, and came back and said he has never done one before, and his supervisor suggested that this was discontinued a couple of days ago. He then asked me what number I called and I quoted the dedicated line. He, again, does not recognise the number.

Don't get me wrong, the agent was helpful, but it continues to show how Qantas is consistently being inconsistent. In the end I was given the option of 16,839 points or 8000 + 72.47. I declined as I don't need the 1000 points or 10 status credit. Classic award is showing as 8000 + 35. I know which way to go!!

My bolding....

This is a real worry.... only 1 month to go folks so book those MASA's while you can...!

re: Has anyone had success with the call-up method for "Marginal" xASA's?

I just don't get it !
It wasn't broken ......was it?
It's all too hard. When my WP status runs out I will look at who has the best deal and be done with it.
Chasing status credits is hard enough without having to waste time on the phone and argue

re: Has anyone had success with the call-up method for "Marginal" xASA's?

Not a bit surprised the ASA and MASA lottery continues, just can't believe Q are making it all so hard for customers, yet not one skerrick of info where this is all heading. Qantas ASA's back online thank you

re: Has anyone had success with the call-up method for "Marginal" xASA's?

Success on the first try!!! Painless process , all up took less than ten minutes.
Red Roo, please pass on my congratulations to Kim in the call centre (1300 number) who was superb! She knew exactly what I was talking about, knew she needed to waive the booking fee etc.

Booked 2 seats MEL - LHR for August next year, First class.
Options were 384,000 points $1600 taxes (classic award rate is 384,000 and $1100 in taxes)
450,000 points $700 taxes
500,000 points $0 taxes.

Will be booking the return flight in 4 weeks time - unfortunately I've only got enough points left now for business class . oh well, guess i can cope :)

Wow. Great result.

re: Has anyone had success with the call-up method for "Marginal" xASA's?

The more people do the better they will get at it, if your serious about demonstrating the value of these to you, I would suggest making calls and at least checking on possibilities as opposed to actually booking, it will help skill up the operators while at the same time demonstrating the demand, that phone number is there for a reason I suspect.

Congrats and perhaps with the points earned between now and return you may have enough to upgrade to First on the way back :D

Didn't realise! - can I upgrade a MASA? Either cash or points? Is it just the same as any other paid fare?
I assumed (Wrongly) it was like classic awards that cant be upgraded.

But surely it isn't up to the consumer to educate the service provider? That seems really, well, I'll say it politely, upside down. Especially when it was perfectly functional in an online process.

I am not advocating the education, thats just a side benefit of showing the need for these to remain!

You can request upgrades for JASA's to First for segments booked into U class and WASA's to Business for segments booked Z class.

You cannot request upgrades for YASA segments booked into X class.
