Mission success! One way FASA (first ever!) to HKG on QF127 in May for 90k points + ~$350.00. Very easy, took about 10 minutes including waiting to get through. Very competent operator.

Asked if they were coming back online, he said that no they would remain via phone only because it's mostly SG and WP booking these tickets.

re: Has anyone had success with the call-up method for "Marginal" xASA's?

I don't think the memo itself is the problem - it's that quite a number of staff appear not to have read it!

If you can find a way to guarantee staff read what's sent to them, then please do share .... I for one would love to implement such a system where I work!

(Off topic)

If you can find a way to guarantee that every memo that gets sent where I work is important enough for every recipient to have read it, then I guarantee I'd read every memo sent to me.....

I might make a call to my contact at QF this week.

Just had a VERY interesting chat to the CSM on my MEL/BNE sector

I thought I was your QF contact. ;)

Jokes aside, I too am interested in what the CSM had to say about this topic.

You're not alone

Oh Red Roo, you are but one of my QF contacts.

I'll send you a PM - but it might be tomorrow. After flying in from PER and having to go into town to pick up my car for the weekend kid taxi service, I need a sleep.

Oooooooh........teasers.......

I know... it must be that AJ is getting QF board to buy Richard Branson's new space plane, and there will be a new service to xx_ via YYY for only 2,000,000 points which will earn 5000 SCs but only if you are WP1 already, and can recite backwards the registration numbers of all A380s in the fleet whilst whispering "right on Q card number 9999" AND know where the incriminating pics of all board members are located.

No? then I give up.

So... what determines if one is able to convert from classic U bucket to ASA in U bucket? because its like a dream come true!

Sorry to backpedal ... I just realised, I thought U was always ASA.... so U bucket could be classic or ASA now?

They are often SG and WP BECAUSE they book these tickets

re: Has anyone had success with the call-up method for "Marginal" xASA's?

Find that odd, i know a few people that only rack up about 50K points shopping etc. used them as ASA's get some points back, status not considered.

I don't find it odd at all, I think there is likely to have been a whole lot more people earning a lot more than "50K on shopping etc" and gaining status through ASA's
YMMV

Well there's an epiphany for me. So the only flight sectors they may have flown are freebies from the points from shopping and not flying.

Maybe they just needed to increase the number of flight sectors need to be completed for status rather than pretty much kill them off. All it seems to have done is complicated it for frequent travellers.

OT But do you have a suggestion for what would be a reasonable amount of sectors for qualification?

Not really. But perhaps a sector a month more reflects a frequent flyer and not a frequent shopper? :). So 12?

This may be a somewhat reasonable comparison:

https://www.aa.com/i18n/AAdvantage/eliteStatus/qualification-requirements.jsp

2013 Elite Status Qualification

[TH]Elite Status[/TH]
[TH]Miles or Points
Required[/TH]
[TH]Segments
Required[/TH]

Executive Platinum
100,000
100

Platinum
50,000
60

Gold
25,000
30

Or if there is a SC and ~ requirement, an additional tiered segment requirement (lower than the 30/60/100 as above) wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing...

re: Has anyone had success with the call-up method for "Marginal" xASA's?

Here's my experience. I booked a JASA tonight for SYD-BNE-TSV, return. This was my first attempt since the change in June.

When I rang, I said that the booking was for ".. an Any Seat Award, booked into "U" for uniform fare class ..".

The first CSR seemed to understand but said that there was no return availability for my dates, other than for the 5.55am flight out of TSV (staying overnight for this one). Although information from the QF award site and EF that I had viewed prior to the phone call indicated otherwise, I finished that call without proceeding any further.

A second call to another CSR shortly afterwards produced the same answer about return availability. However, I then pressed for a specific later flight that I nominated for TSV-BNE and then the onward BNE-SYD fell into place. These flights were then able to be booked. For some reason the flights seemed not to have shown as TSV-BNE-SYD, but were both bookable separately. Maybe a software issue.

The second CSR started talking about how this should be a Classic Award that it can be booked on-line and that she had worked there for xx years and then took a pause when I mentioned that this award booking (as an ASA in U fare class booking hasn't been possible other than through the Call Centre since 26th June). When I decided to mention Right on Q 7740 I was questioned as to whether I worked for Qantas.

While I was not treated rudely, it was not a smooth or pleasant experience and things seemed to become somewhat icy and I felt that I was being lectured in response to my "hints".

Anyway, my mentioning of the assistance fee waiver was met with "Why?", but it was waived at that point anyway.

I was somewhat concerned as to how the booking would actually look when it came through.

I've just received the e-ticket which shows the status as "Business Confirmed" and also "QF Any Seat Award conditions apply - Change/Refund QF only". So I guess that means that I'll receive the SCs and points. Does that look OK for anyone who has already done this?

Anyway, it's all done now, and having already accepted the DSC offer, it will keep me WP.

Total 48,000 points + $349 + $7 cc fee.

Everything you mentioned had been experienced by yours truly.

I had an identical MASA (same route / pts / co-pay) booking for 2014.

For a data point, Reference on Q #7740 was once met with a confident reply "I have it in front of me" followed by a co-payment that was 2x what it should be. Needless to say, that was declined.

So, its supposed presence does not always bring out the correct responses.

re: Has anyone had success with the call-up method for "Marginal" xASA's?

Its still a right royal mess, pot luck n' go in the draw, sorry Q after two months of taking ASA's off line it still has cracks.
