re: Has anyone had success with the call-up method for "Marginal" xASA's?

just a question... how would the ASA price be different from the classic award price? I thought eh were supposed to be one and the same (provided you paid the taxes fees and qantas fuel surcharge in $)

The points are calculated differently, and there is (usually) a higher $ co-payment.

re: Has anyone had success with the call-up method for "Marginal" xASA's?

Is it possible to book a JASA on non-QF aircraft ?
Looking at JNB and can get there on QF63 but only suitable availability coming back is on South African Airways JNB-PER with flight number QF303 ?
Will I still get the double SCs ?

Has to be a Qantas or Jetstar flight to be booked as a Qantas or Jetstar Any Seat Award

Yeah, but doesn't that just mean a QF flight number? Not QF metal..... #slightlyconfused.

Currently has to be on either Qantas or Jetstar Metal Only

then I'm really confused. in the old days, a 90k award to Asia in F was the same for a classic award as it was for an mASA.

yes there was a higher $ component, but the points were always the same (using minimum points for the ASA).

has that changed now?

From what i understand, classic are based on the total of the individual sectors' points cost. mASAs do not appear to be calculated the same way.

Happy to be corrected.

Yep. Classic points are calculated on the sum of individual sectors, ASA points are calculated on the great circle distance distance from origin to destination. Which is why in the good old days you could do a JASA ADL-SYD-MEL for 16000 points + money. Now it is more difficult because if a direct route exists they seem to be disallowing JASAs by the indirect route.:(

There are still good JASAs to be had though. One of the best is ADL-BNE-TSV. The great circle distance ADL-TSV is such that you can still get a JASA for 24000 points (just) whereas the classic points cost is 36000.

ah ok... thanks... so if I find a SYD-HKG in F as a classic... I'm not necessarily going to be able to get it for 90k point plus $$ as an mASA?

sorry I'm late in this even though I have been reading this thread from the beginning. I just thought it was same same but having to call. (so I guess the question is, when the agent quotes you xx points, how do you know it's correct?... or are we still using the same mileage chart?)

You should be able to get it at the same points cost. No issues here of direct vs indirect flights so ASA points should be the same as classic.

re: Has anyone had success with the call-up method for "Marginal" xASA's?

You may though get it for less but more cash.As posted I booked a MASA last weekend BNE-SYD-NRT.Classic was 72000 points,MASA 60000 + $120 more in "taxes".

This works because (correct me if I am wrong) you can't go direct BNE-NRT, so the indirect flight via SYD is allowed as a mASA. But I don't think MEL_Traveller will get a FASA SYD-HKG for less than the points cost of a classic because a direct flight is available. Should get it for the same though.

I did an online JASA PER-JNB-PER as the QF codeshare on the SAA metal earlier this year but maybe things have changed.

... Also, I did see (but didn't book) mASA's on the QF codeshare between SYD & AKL/SCL - LAN metal.

That has me intrigued and very interested. How did you see the MASA?

I'm not sure that is 100% correct.... And certainly hasn't been the case in all the bookings I have been making. Still making bookings with connections when direct flights exist....

The example you use of ADL-SYD-MEL from memory was QF changing REVENUE tickets specifically on ADL flights to not allow connections at the same/near price as direct. I think at the time they modified a couple of other domestic routes from memory - and then this change then cascaded to JASAs and the like - it wasn't about directly disallowing JASA's by any mean - just a by product of a decision made.

re: Has anyone had success with the call-up method for "Marginal" xASA's?

Nope. Jasa could be used on any silly routing like ool-syd-bne for 16k but a chunk of cash
