Princess Fiona you should get Shrek to use the points slider to reduce the cash cost if it suits him. Of course the points slider is invisible to Shrek but the operator has it on the screen.

It started off at 118,00 no cash I think, but I've raided all his points for a FASA so the kitty is a bit low ;)

Well his points went to a good cause then. No harm done. Row 99 E on his next flight?

re: Has anyone had success with the call-up method for "Marginal" xASA's?

Mel-syd-asp and return via the same route should be 48000. Big mistake going via cbr
Yes that's what i thought as well but couldn't find any for anywhere near that, all the classic award ones were 72,000 so would be interested in knowing whether anyone has been able to book flights for this route in November or January for 48,000 points

re: Has anyone had success with the call-up method for "Marginal" xASA's?

I didn't call but recently secured 2 return BNE-SYD on a red e-deal points plus pay 36000 points plus $74. This seemed a pretty good deal and fairly close to the ASA rates of yore.

re: Has anyone had success with the call-up method for "Marginal" xASA's?

On the weekend a classic award in J SYD-NRT was 72000 point +~$250.A MASA in J was 60000 points +~$350.

That's very strange. Would make sense for BNE-NRT...

re: Has anyone had success with the call-up method for "Marginal" xASA's?

Booked a Jasa yesterday as a staus run MEL - SYD - ASP - SYD - CBR - MEL which should net me 450 status credits (with the 50% bonus promotion) for 86,000 points and $597 in taxes so happy with that. Qantas agent said she had never booked one but was able to follow the 7740 reference card.
Oops the routing should have been MEL-SYD-ASP-SYD-BRI-MEL for 450 status credits

re: Has anyone had success with the call-up method for "Marginal" xASA's?

OT but the best way to experience F to SIN would be to spend 45K AA miles plus taxes and fly on the new BA 777 SYD-SIN

Just had a look and for new F on BA16, it's 45k AA miles + US $242, compared to 95k QFF points + AUD $257.

Availability is not great and although BA new F has an impressive hard product, all the reviews I've read have suggested otherwise.
Does BA release award inventory closer to departure?

I think the SCs will be 420 not 450, that is, 280 * 150%. It's quite a points and dollar hike compared with the same route that omits CBR. (48k $380-ish). The main things is that, as you say, you are happy with it and you got the CSR to understand what they had to do too.

If they wanted to remove them they would just remove them.

No, we were told "ASAs are here to stay" . So It's just a slow strangulation, so they can quietly dispose if the body when no one is taking any notice any more.

re: Has anyone had success with the call-up method for "Marginal" xASA's?

Have booked a couple of JASAs recently. Both were for the same route: Sydney-Melbourne-Perth-Brisbane-Sydney. I wanted to minimise points spend, so both trips cost 88,000 points plus a bit under $600; each gaining back a few thousand points and each earning 240SCs (without promotional bonus).

The first booking went very smoothly. The call centre operator knew exactly what to do and we commiserated with each other that the website changes made things more inconvenient for customer and operator both.

The second booking took a bit longer. The operator wasn't familiar with MASA bookings and had to consult with her supervisor. Even the supervisor thought that the booking attracted a telephone booking fee and I had to point out that this type of booking did not incur the fee. Still, in the end, all was resolved satisfactorily and I mentioned to the operator that RoQ 7740 spelled everything out for future reference.

re: Has anyone had success with the call-up method for "Marginal" xASA's?

<snip>
I guess that outside of AFF and similar sites, MASAs aren't that widely known about and sought after as a result.

The fact that Qantas has taken every single reference to them off the web site ( ie not just the ability to book) and are not training their phone operators to know about them / how to book them ( leaving it to AFFers etc) might contribute to MASAs not being widely known. :)

Gee, wonder why?

I watched 'House if Cards' again recently.

" You might say Qantas is being dissembling and dishonourable concerning MASAs, Mattie. I couldn't possibly comment."

Hi Rooflyer please follow the below link and you can see that ASA are still mentioned in a fairly big way on the website

Frequent Flyer - Using Points - Qantas & Jetstar Any Seat Awards

I am in agreeance with yourself that QF are planning the demise of the ASA hence why I have now re allocated my flying and have already booked 3 flights to LHR on SQ next year.

re: Has anyone had success with the call-up method for "Marginal" xASA's?

Our guidelines are certainly not intended to offend, and have always been generous by way if inclusions since the program's inception.

.

sorry for going off topic but this needs correcting.

the qantas frequent flyer program is one of the most restrictive in terms of those to whom a member can assign an award.

i can't think of another major program that limits redemption to eligible family members only.

re: Has anyone had success with the call-up method for "Marginal" xASA's?

Obviously a temporary glitch as JASA now booked. 6 minutes 51 seconds on the phone. CSA knew exactly what she was doing and when I checked about the 3500 point booking fee, she said, "no that doesn't apply to this type of booking". :)

A data point on changing a domestic JASA..... I just called up to change my outbound flight to an earlier flight, having previously checked for Classic Award availability. CSA, Michele, was across what needed doing, although I was put on hold for about a minute, but when she came back on, it was all sorted. No change fees or points. About 3-4 minutes all up.

re: Has anyone had success with the call-up method for "Marginal" xASA's?

Refreshing to speak with Virginia in Melbourne call center today to book my my 5th xASA since June 26th, all booked with no issues unlike last time I called a few weeks ago. Red Roo its so nice to book these when the CSA knows what I'm talking about...

PER > ADL 36k $241.81 80 SC (+ 50% Bonus Offer) = 120 SC

Wonderful when it all works out, Red Roo I do hope these continue to be available for the future, while they are I can assure you I will give all my flying revenue to Q as I work my way towards Platinum...

re: Has anyone had success with the call-up method for "Marginal" xASA's?

Just off the phone to the CSA. wanted JFK>SYD
started off badly! was trying to to book a P+P on the normal flight. i explained i wanted the classic award as a ASA in J
on hold for a few minutes came back saying it wasn't possible with only 1 sector... but then went on hold again. she came back i was expecting either a massive points or massive $$$ price

but when she said JASA for 180k or 128k + US$540 i was surprised and booked straight away!

I stand corrected, thanks. Interesting to note:

* under ' how to book' , first note says use points+pay

* second note says to call if wanting X, U, Z or P class, but " mysteriously" omits to add that no booking fee will apply!

Coupled with the many phone agents who " mysteriously" are unaware that no phone booking is applicable, is there any doubt that this is a deliberate strategy by QF management to charge for these where they can get away with it?
