If you don't need the SC's then stick with the J booking on EK.
If you do need them then book PE and put in an upgrade request.
I don't fly PE but that's my 2 cents worth

re: Has anyone had success with the call-up method for "Marginal" xASA's?

If I needed SC desperately to achieve or retain a particular status I would go with the refund. As it makes sense. Otherwise go with the fussy flyer and enjoy the perks J has to offer.

re: Has anyone had success with the call-up method for "Marginal" xASA's?

I booked a JASA a few days back one way from MEL - HKG for Feb 22 next year. Lady who took the call was pleasant to deal with, but was a little disappointed that she was told by her supervisor that I should book online with Points + Pay. The lady indicated she didn't think that was quite right and when I suggested she should read ROQ 7740 suddenly everything fell into place and we were booked. Really wanted to go MEL -> SYD -> HKG and have a chance of upgrading to F on the A380, but there is no Classic award availability at all for that day out of SYD, and was told they could only request opening up a seat on those flights if a request for a Classic award was put in.

Might have a crack at doing SIN - MEL in J with upgrade to F. Never flown F before, was hoping to treat the missus for our wedding anniversary.

I am not sure that you can get the new F from SIN.

Hmmm. Guess I'm going to be stuck with J. Still much better that slumming it in Y like I normally do for work travel!

re: Has anyone had success with the call-up method for "Marginal" xASA's?

I want to get this straight before I call (waste probably half a day!)

If I have several combinations of flights i could take...
say I can depart Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane flying to L.A.

I have to look up the several possible flights I could take with the classic award. See if the is a seat available in the classic.
Then call up and ask for each combination as a ASA to find the best deal out of them all???

I know must of been said before but how is this better!?!

OT but the best way to experience F to SIN would be to spend 45K AA miles plus taxes and fly on the new BA 777 SYD-SIN

That's about it. Make sure that you've read the sticky so that you can make it smoother for the rep that you talk to if you need to. (Yes, I know that sounds crazy but it might be necessary). Or, simply HUACA especially as you want to try different options or you will end up providing them with free training on your time.

Better? Who said this was better? Maybe the bean counters at QF.

Sorry what's a sticky?

I have applied for world cup tickets in Rio so have to wait up till the 4th Nov to find out if I have tickets!
Might just do a trial run today on the phone to get it down.

my run to Rio is going to be SYD>LAX>MIA>GIG GIG>JFK>LAX>SYD (things we do for SC!)

All the QF returns seem to fly me to brissie so might just split the QF leg in 2x1way JASA SYD>LAX & LAX>BNE

re: Has anyone had success with the call-up method for "Marginal" xASA's?

Now this is just dam right annoying. the are no direct QF flights to LAX from SYD, MEL or BNE
back up plan of DFW it is!

re: Has anyone had success with the call-up method for "Marginal" xASA's?

This maybe a really stupid questions, but what is the benefits doing ASA at classic rewards points level?

My understanding is Classic rewards requires much less points then ASA, but doesn't get any points of SC on that flight? So people is able to find a classic rewards seat on qantas website and ring up to get a tickets through ASA but at classic rewards points?

sorry if that's wrong, i don't really follow qantas a lot. thanks in advance.

See this thread for some ideas:

Business class can be had earn SC's and QFF points in some interesting routes. Some routes are actually less points to book. (e.g. TSV-DRW)

re: Has anyone had success with the call-up method for "Marginal" xASA's?

Ok, fingers crossed I think Shrek has just had success with a newbie :D
Rang the 1300 number and re-routed to the Plat desk. Asked to book an ASA in U class. Agent stated she had never done one of these bookings but "you want the points and SC's I think" and away we went.
MEL-PER-SYD 72,000 and $451.
Some hiccup with the ticketing but she is going to call back with the booking ref. :)

Higher co payment req'd for ASA's but same number of points as Classic's mean status and FFPts are earned. Great way to assist maintaining or attaining status.

Yes. Reason to do so as per above.

Not so much wrong but questioning why is likely to have you labelled as a heretic around here. :D:D

re: Has anyone had success with the call-up method for "Marginal" xASA's?

Booked a Jasa yesterday as a staus run MEL - SYD - ASP - SYD - CBR - MEL which should net me 450 status credits (with the 50% bonus promotion) for 86,000 points and $597 in taxes so happy with that. Qantas agent said she had never booked one but was able to follow the 7740 reference card.

You sometimes get a MASA cheaper than a classic award in points. On the weekend a classic award in J SYD-NRT was 72000 point +~$250.A MASA in J was 60000 points +~$350.As mrsdrron was ~ 200 SCs short of requalifying WP on our planned travel next year we have brought that down to only 60 SCs.And still have to book a flight NAN-SYD.So it made the extra $100 a good value purchase.

re: Has anyone had success with the call-up method for "Marginal" xASA's?

Mel-syd-asp and return via the same route should be 48000. Big mistake going via cbr

re: Has anyone had success with the call-up method for "Marginal" xASA's?

Princess Fiona you should get Shrek to use the points slider to reduce the cash cost if it suits him. Of course the points slider is invisible to Shrek but the operator has it on the screen.
