Heads up about program changes

Points earn is delayed. SC earn isn't.

The AusBT article seems to imply that QF are still in discussions with BA and CX about point earn, if discussions are ongoing it could be a matter of how long is a piece of string + 30 days notification before we know about points earn, are we really sure that the SC earn is finalized?

Amateur hour.

You'd think these changes were discussed and deliberated before announcing to the world. Then again, it is Qantas we are talking about.

Thank you for that tie up with EK though, Qantas. That had me trying (and liking) an airline I never would've otherwise picked.

The article made for interesting reading, although most of what was discussed, we have already dissected fully here. ;) I actually found this a rather apt inclusion:

"Frequent flyers reveal their own Fairer Flyer strategyIn the meantime, many savvy travellers are revising their own booking arrangements and airline preferences in light of the July 1 changes.

Some are shifting to other airlines within the Oneworld family, such as British Airways and its Avios scheme, while others are looking to build status with Virgin Australia alongside Qantas.

Here's what a number of informed Qantas Frequent Flyer members revealed to Australian Business Traveller about their post-July loyalty plans:Qantas Frequent Flyer shake-up: what's your plan come July 1"

The link gives a small overview of both domestic & international QF FF, but the comments below the article are rather telling . . . . . .

The AusBT article suggests so.
QF also said they would review the comments people have been sending them about it since they announced the SC earn changes. ie, while it is reasonable to have lower partner earns on routes QF operates (eg, SYD-NRT, MEL-HKG), it is not reasonable to have lower earns on routes QF does NOT operate (eg HKG-JFK, NRT-LHR, MIA-SCL, ICN-HKG).

Where does it give that idea? It's only mentioning BA and CX as QFF partners and showing examples of new and old SC earn.

Which is exactly why QF have higher earns on routes between regions or within regions that it doesn't operate. So HKG-JFK, MIA-SCL and ICN-HKG all earn at higher rates than comparable distance partner flights on routes that QF compete with. Where it gets tricky is for routes like NRT-LHR. QF arguably competes on SE Asia - Europe via EK codeshares, but that's not an option out of NRT.

Edit, on second thoughts, of course NRT-LHR is just an excuse for someone to fly a competitor airline to Europe from Australia. That's why it's in the lower earn!!:p

Here:

A raft of changes to the Qantas Frequent Flyer scheme will kick in Tuesday July 1st under the airline's controversial 'Fairer Flying' banner, which sees Qantas passengers earning points based on the type and cost of their ticket rather than the distance flown.
Qantas is also slashing the number of status credits earned when flying on partner airlines such as British Airways and Cathay Pacific – making it harder to get that silver, gold or platinum Qantas card unless you fly with Qantas.
However, while the number of frequent flyer points earned on those same flights is also being revised, Qantas has yet to finalise those changes.
"We’re still negotiating with partner airlines at this stage" a Qantas spokesperson confirmed to Australian Business Traveller.
This means that travellers listing their Qantas Frequent Flyer membership number against Oneworld flights from July 1 will earn the same number of Qantas points as before, but fewer status credits for the same flight.

Qantas delays new points earning scheme for partner airlines - Flights | hotels | frequent flyer | business class - Australian Business Traveller

So not necessarily just BA and CX but could also be other OW members. (JL, AA etc), we don't really know who QF are talking to about points earning except that they are presumably OneWorld members....

More like pleading with BA/CX not to accept the tsunami of EX-QFF submitting membership applications :D

Not so! If I am in HKG and want to fly to LHR or CDG, I shouldn't have to return to SYD first.

No. You don't have to, you can of course take the logical route via BKK & DXB. Take CX to BKK, SIN or KUL and then fly on QF codeshare on EK from one of those ports via DXB. :p;) .

On a positive note, at least QF haven't (yet) gone completely down the DL path, where it has tiered the airlines into 4 categories, and you have reduced earn on all the Asian carriers in Skyteam (regardless of whether it is competing or not), and no earn of status or miles on one skyteam partner (KE).

They'd probably expect you to fly HKG-DXB-LHR/CDG on EK metal... Stuff flying CX to BKK, SIN or KUL!

I wonder what QF would do if the ACCC revokes permission for the EK/QF tie up (review late next year) or don't renew it past March 2018.

I don't get this.... how would it take so long for partner airlines to accept a reduced earn rate? Surely they'd jump at the chance to pay out less miles?

Something doesn't add up if partners aren't embracing this.

So is QF demanding more money for the miles? Is Qantas wanting partner airlines to pay more money, but actually only giving us pax half the miles?

Part 2 that I don't understand... the Qantas rep has told us they don't go public unless they have completely finalised everything. This includes situations where passengers could have had the opportunity to make better arrangements. This is done to ensure consistency.

So how could this change not have been finalised?

Not necessarily, particularly on high rev fares where points and status could be a competitive advantage (or disadvantage for them vs QF if they were lower). They already have reduced earn on discount economy (25% on BA, 0 or 50% on CX), but price is a big competitive factor in the discounted economy end of the market. I wonder how it would change things if CX & BA business class earn matched MH & QR earn on routes they compete with QF on (75% vs 125% at the moment).
