Holidays and Airport 'Chaos' since COVID

Indeed. I recall they did have port a loos in the arrivals jail also.

For you boys and girls who didn't get to relive the Tiger experience back in the day...

Thanks for the news clip Saab34, It’s all coming back to me now ……

I am not a commie but I think there should be a basic standard for design and operation.

Manus Island detention facilities are more enticing and comfortable.

MNL (NAIA) was its usual chaotic sh!tshow.
I am discovering that Filipinos seem to have a talent for making things more laborious than initially seems possible.

Some things will never change. What do you expect with Spanish and American masters?

Of course I love them but Jesus did instruct them not to do to anything until he gets back!

Safe travels

Yes not sure how that can happen with the technology available these days
A few years ago, MEL went down thanks to a faulty RJ-45 connector readily available from Jaycar….

But MNL has been long overdue for replacement. And maybe putting some fuel in the backup generator is a good idea in the meantime….

T4 - they probably should have waited till he got back as well…

Yes that would be a novel concept.

We had designed a transformer to run on UPS, didn’t realise that the UPS needs power to adequately charge and when you don’t have power more than an hour at the time - it compromises the design and the safety those working in and around. You can get caught out by logic.

To your comment SYD, all critical infrastructure has diesel gen sets or better, no excuses for MNL on this one, I am afraid.

For another data point of 2022 airport chaos, check out this thread of the MEL SQ check-in experience that many have faced recently. No idea if it's any better but I sincerely hope all feedback is considered and something is done about it, as it's just not a good look for SQ (or MEL operations in general):

From my recent experiences, there’s a lot more in shambles at SQ right now then just the check in experience. I’ll avoid them for now until they seriously improve the in flight experience and J class food. We were both not happy on either of our flights. Not even talking about the totally overfilled lounge in Changi.

We were disappointed as a whole with our SQ J flights to/from Germany a few months ago. Food was mostly only just ok (except for the Satay on 2 flights), staff were a bit hit and miss, SIN lounge was overcrowded for most of our stay, Munich lounge, a Lufthansa one, was extremely grubby and generally poor, and the J seats were mostly poorly designed. Check in at Perth was fine. The trip certainly didn't make us desirous of flying with them again unless it came down to a reasonable price difference. The flights didn't live up to my preconceived thoughts of how good they would be.

I think SQ is highly overrated to be honest

That sounds exactly like our experience- rather poor throughout and agree, the Satay is an exception from that rule. We went SQ to Thailand (and a few months before just return to SIN) and then Qatar onto Berlin. The difference between the two airlines could not be greater (though the Qatar lounge in Doha was as much a mess as the lounge in Changi).

Such a shame as about one or two decades ago when I lived in Singapore myself, SQ rightfully was the national pride of Singapore. These time have long gone, unfortunately. And that great reputation is slowly but surely getting eroded as these negative experiences are now the norm it seems.

I do wonder if it's an issue of SQ training new aircrew staff, and teething issues through that?

I flew to Europe around May of last year in J, and I would agree it was a bit hit and miss with the staff. I have another flight there soon, so it will be interesting to see what's changed.

My Singaporean friends tell me it had to do with cost savings measures introduced by management (we know this one all too well!) and apparently the Unions also have a big say in all that. I know- you wouldn’t think so in Singapore but it seems SQ is an exception there.

What does that mean in practice though, did they reduce staffing levels on some routes or something?

No idea but you can tell when you fly with them. I don’t think it’s less staff but their service is not as polished as it used to be. And there’s cost cutting measures quite visibly with the food and other amenities.

The cost cutting measures are also very visible in their airport outstation operations - a prime example being MEL (as mentioned in the linked thread a couple of messages ago).

Changing agent check-in to kiosk check-in of course saves on staff expenses. Either that or if SQ is to be believed it's all MEL management's fault that they got shafted to the kiosk check-in area.

Last but not least, one of my biggest peeves is the cheapening/severe quality reduction in the feel, colouring and overall value of the boarding pass you get at MEL, regardless of whether you're in Y, J or F. Getting an all-white BP without any premium feel to it is really disappointing. fortunately you can get the proper boarding pass (only for the flight ex-SIN if you're connecting at SIN) at SIN's transfer desk but that's time and effort wasted. If that version of cost cutting hits SIN as it did MEL, I'd be pretty damn furious. Fact of the matter is the MEL-SIN BP is still the coughpy version, only the SIN-xx_ BP can be reprinted at SIN.

Anyone else have similar feelings about BP quality or am I treading down the wrong path here?

Here's an example I found online of what you get at MEL vs what you get at SIN (note that both BPs are J BPs):
