How do Hilton treat you as an Elite?

The receipts sometimes work, many times do not. The Hilton secret is to always get a final receipt on check out and keep it!

as a Diamond, i get my receipts emailed to me automatically after check out now...this only started this year and it's worked at HSW, Cairns, Surfers. haven't tried it OS yet

So its finally happened...I've been bitten by the H SYD curse, as many know Im usually a pretty big defender of the property.
No upgrade at all, despite relaxation suites and above being available...
Even though I pointed out that my last stay I got a Relaxation Suite and a King the few times before that, I couldn't be upgraded and would have to be pay for it.... Not even an upgrade to King Exec Room.

I luckily managed to wrangle an upgrade to a Relaxation Room for the second night which means I have to change in the morning. Yay for enhancements... That was only offered by the lounge manager who I know well from my stays here, wasn't offered by front desk when I asked, although I did get the "The computer says you're here very often, one of our regulars"...

Geez...that's bad (not even an exec room). My king suite run came to an end but I still managed to score the relaxation room earlier this week. Maybe the next stay would be like yours (hope not). I asked them if the change of owners triggered any 'enhancements' and was told no change and very little involvement from the group that bought HSYD.

I have an email from Hilton SYD stating upgrades are only available to Exec Rooms, Relaxation Rooms and Junior Suites.

Now we all know this is nonsense of course in practice but that is their official policy on rooms for HHONORS upgrades.

Absolutely flat out in HSW exec lounge tonight. "Haven't been this busy since NYE" said one staff member.

The lounge has been under resourced tonight, and the staff are glad that we will comment on it. When we asked if it was worth talking to the duty manager, the reply was that he was busy - doing the dishes. He came and spoke to us later, and would also appreciate a couple of regulars commenting.

Well least he's not afraid of getting his hands dirty! :)

In a perverse way I am enjoying the excuses from the Conrad Bali over the upgrade fail so I wrote back querying their interpretation of the upgrade rule to only availability in the next room category and have received the following response.

Thank you for your reply.
Yes, you are right that the upgrade is based on the next best available room. However upon your check-in, the higher room category was not available.
The Conrad Suites and Pool Suites are not part of the complimentary upgrade scheme, and therefore a Conrad Pool Suite was offered with an additional cost.
I hope the above clarifies and I remain at your disposal for further assistance.

So to recap we've had

1. No upgrade available

2. An upgrade is available but at a cost

3. An upgrade was available but it was two room categories above what you booked and we only have to offer you one category above what you booked

4. No upgrade was available. The upgrade that we said was available in 3 but not available because of our misinterpretation of the rules was It turns out now never available because we don't upgrade to those types of rooms.

It's a great hotel and I'm sure I will stay there again but a simple sorry we attempted to up sell to you when we should have just respected the terms of the program would have gone a long way

Property: Hilton, San Francisco Airport Bayfront
Status: Gold

Better than normal for a US Hilton property. Full of flight crew.

Continuing my Hilton RTW trip...

Property: Hilton Garden Inn, Montreal Centre Ville

Status: Gold
Date: Thursday 21st - 3 nights CAD 174.00 (average)pn + Taxes
Status: Gold
Booked: Base King room - Senior Rate

All rooms the same. Pity I got a room on the second floor (or 15) and far from the elevators when my profile says the opposite. Hotel quite full and efficient double glazing kept out all traffic noise from main road. No Gold recognition at Check In but plenty of water in room and full cooked breakfast offered each day. No EL in the Garden Inn. Good central location in this interesting historical city. Good for walking around. Most signs only in French across most of the city.

Property: Hampton Inn and Suites, Lake Placid, NY
Status: Gold
Date: Wednesday 26th - 1 night - USD 125 incl Tax Senior Rate.
Status: Gold
Booked: Base Queen Twin - only booked 24 hours in advance.

Excellent new property. No recognition at Check Inn. In fact nothing as water in all rooms, as is free WiFi and breakfast. No complaints though as received a lake view room and everything worked okay. Sometimes these out of town properties in North America of supposed 'lower quality' and less facilities are better value as they are more modern and have staff who seem better motivated.

Property was quiet as off season but could imagine it would be heaving in winter and during the fall season. Much of the town was 'closed'.

Or in other words, if you book the top non-suites room, you won't be getting a free upgrade?

The room hierarchy goes something like ( numbers are my observations)

1. Various forms of standard rooms
2. Standard rooms pool access (multiple)
3. Ocean view suites (ground and level 1) (8 of)
4. Ocean view suites pool access (4 of)
5. Ocean view suites plunge pool (6 of)

4 and 5 might be interchangeable or equal)

Then they have the separate

Conrad suites building with
Suites
Pool suites
Presidential suite(s)

It is this later category of the separate Conrad suites building that they claim not to offer upgrades to

Ironically, I'm pretty sure I recall reading here that some people have been upgrades to the suites.

It's very rare to get an upgrade to the Conrad Suites, actually. Most diamonds don't get it unless they get lucky or pay some sort of gap.

Jackthomas, I'm giving this 'enhancement' another test tomorrow. Will report back if I end up in a standard room (still hoping it doesn't happen). Wish me luck!

I think if a diamond has paid for the highest non-suite room, its only fair to get a suite if available though. Good think I booked the cheapest possible rate. Any upgrade will be a bonus and I can't be disappointed :)
