Hi Guys. Mrs Sumthinfornuthin and I want to get to Koh Samui. I can see how to get to coughet either direct or through Singapore but I can't see how to get to Koh Samui. Even looked at Dragonair but they don't seem to go there. What do I do ??

I think Bangkok Airways flies there. Otherwise the more common way would be to Surat Thani, and then bus/ferry to Koh Samui.

Air Asia and Thai both fly to Suart Thani.

We went through BKK on Bangkok airways back in 05......see that Silk Air now fly there.

Bangkok Airways is your best bet. They fly SIN/BKK/UTP-USM

We did this last Xmas.
J* to coughet. We then took Bangkok Airways direct to Samui. It is a very short flight on an ATR. I believe Bangkok Airways may even own the airport at Samui. The Samui airport is an excellent airport with sensational facilities- some of the best public bathrooms I have ever seen in the departures area (big fish tanks etc). Samui was a lot of fun and we enjoyed it far more than coughet.

No comparison between Samui and coughet. Samui is lovely and scores much lower on the bogan count, although if you are sensitive to topless euros coverting in the shallows be ready to avert your eyes. Lots of great beachside restaurants up in the Bo Phut area. Great opportunity to win a t-shirt in the scratch card competition - look for the English touts on mopeds. I've still got my Paradise Direct t-shirt - they tried hard to shake me down on time-share but I'm the one left holding the free t-shirt!

Currently typing this in Mae Nam Koh Samui :) The wife and I flew Singapore Airlines from MEL to SIN then Silk Air to USM... But theres pretty much a daily flight from Bangkok. And after waiting probably 45 mins to clear immigration at Samui airport (note - its an outside airport - no walls just a roof) in the heat with only two customs officials - the Bangkok arrivals left straight away...

Top spot - now back to the pool....

Bangkok Air to Samui is pretty decent service-wise, though a bit of the pricey side unless you purchase well in advance (and make sure you are a Flyer Bonus member so you get the extra 10kg luggage) - so much so that we have in the past skipped Samui and gone somewhere else just as nice from BKK for a fraction of the cost. Nice little monopoly they have there.

+1 to that. Join their program. Free and only takes 1 min. Then you get the extra luggage allowance.

We also then pushed on to CNX (chiang mai) which is a wonderful spot. Very different compared to HKT & USM.
But I imagine would be getting rather hot now. Dec/Jan seems better as you get their 'winter' up north. We flew USM to CNX via BKK with Bangkok Airways again (but BKK to USM was on Nok Air metal due to aircraft maintenance). CNX to HKT was then with Thai Airways direct. CNX is another nice big airport.

I would happily fly with Bangkok Airways again.

both TG and UM fly there from BKK. But i think prices are pretty much the same for each. UM wins on frequency of service and 'boutique' lounges even if travelling in Y (nice place to wait and refreshments).

For a fraction of the cost, and the scenic route, Nok Air flies there (from Don Muang, provided that has opened again after the floods). Connects with a bus and ferry from Surat Thani. Through tickets (including bus and ferry) can be bought on the NOK website. We flew NOK plus class, was about $100 from BKK, but takes 6 hours or so (economy class was a fraction of the cost).

Bankok airways ex-BKK or HKT to USM. I believe Bankok airways use ATRs or similar on the routes to USM (it's not that big an airport!)

Personally, I'd fly to HKT then get the ferry.

Flew QF to BKK and then PG to USM in Feb this year with SWMBO and my parents.

PG has between 17 and 20 daily flights from BKK to USM on a combination of ATR (very loud) and A319's

Flights were ok and after all it is only a 45 minute flight. The "lounge" in BKK was very dirty but USM airport was very nice. Will definitely go back.

That would be one hell of a ferry ride from HKT to USM. You might want to do a stopover in SIN on the way.

Some of these new ferries are amazing. Particularly the French ones (but definitely not the Italian ones). They've even become so advanced that they can fly over land like a bird, all the way from coughet to Koh Samui.

I caught one of these ferries earlier this year from Samui to coughet. It was a bit noisy though and they made us check in our luggage.

But it was much nicer than the ferry I caught from coughet to Samui back when I was a backpacker and a much younger man:

In all seriousness, did you mean URT (Surat Thani) rather than HKT (coughet)? Surat Thani is the one place from which you can viably catch a (water-borne) ferry to Koh Samui.

But I would strongly advise paying the extra money to fly direct into Koh Samui airport. Surat Thani is not a place you would visit for fun and you'll save a lot of time by avoiding the ferry / bus combo.

Hi Guys

thanks for all the tips. I had a look at Bangkok airlines website bit it appears you have to front up at their office within 2 days of booking. how do you get around that

you can purchase from an international booking site (for example zuji in AU) or book on TG for TG flights.

Now only speaking personally ... I just choose to ignore the need to front up to airline offices.
We've used Bangkok Airways several times now. We always purchase via their website direct (may be join as a member first).
We present our CC at time of collecting BPs at check-in. They have always been cool with that (Jan 2012 was last time we flew with them).
You could always then ring them and say you are from Australia. I reckon our rate of fraud is very low vs 'local'.
