How do you store your wine [+ Fridge/Cabinet recommendations]

If you haven't purchased yet, might be worth waiting for the increased cash back OzBargain says is coming tomorrow:
Does it stack with gift cards tho?
It basically works out to be 10% discount, unless I buy 1 and then buy again with 10% GC seperately.

You'd need to check the term of the offer when it is live. The terms do vary, but gift cards are often excluded. This could also be a targetted offer. Hence why I provided the direct link to OzBargain so you can do your due diligence.

CB is on tomorrow, however there is bonus $15 in the App under Earn More which is targetted.

I'll order 1 rack with GC - 10%< and 1 rack with CB - 25%>

Has anyone built a wine room before? recommendations for a air con systems / wall insulation / installers in Melbourune?
I'm looking to build a house and am considering adding a wine room (snippet of floor plan attached)View attachment 260612

I used Cellarack – The Wine Rack Shop – Custom Wine Racks in Melbourne (I'm in Perth) to provide racking, insulation and cooling system to turn a small existing storeroom into my cellar. I was extremely happy with the level of service and product received.

I just see now on their website that they've had a bit of a disaster and change of ownership though. Still might be worth getting in touch.

Just looking at your floor plan, the space allocated to racking looks quite small. Keep in mind that if you plan on putting a cooling unit in then you will lose some more racking space on one of the exterior walls. If its a box type unit, you'll loose a lot. If split, then probably not much. I didn't want to lose space at all so went with the Fondis door cooling unit. You could do the same, but might be less suitable for you given the high visibility of he location. also the door would open outwards.

If you wan more details of what I did or have questions, just ask :)

Edit: I have to say that the convenience of a cellar over a fridge is huge. I previously had one of those large Liebherr fridges filled to the max. Great unit, but playing tetris did get annoying sometimes.

Thanks Dave will look into it, the proposed room is about 3.1m x 1.6m. You got any photos?? :)

Sure, here you go. Needed to use the wide angle lens, so excuse the distortion. Also the floor is a bit of a mess!

The door to the cellar which is also the cooling unit. Not ugly, but perhaps not something you want visible in your living room. This is off my laundry so look doesn't matter.

I landed up sticking some polystyrene to the door. It's aluminium and didn't seem well insulted.

You can see the insulation on the walls. It's also behind all the racking and on the ceiling. The floor was tiled (same as the laundry). I noticed the tiles outside in the laundry were getting noticeably cold (concrete slab underneath) the closer one got to the door. So I grabed some nice insulted carpet tiles from Bunnings and put them on the ground. Also gives added security should I drop a bottle as they're quite thick and soft. Also easy to replace a tile should one become damaged or something spills (as I found out after a can of nitro cold brew coffee exploded).

The first section on the left is my champagne section. The racking is slightly large to accommodate the larger size champagne bottles tend to be.

A little difficult to see here, but the gap between racking sections is also slightly bigger, which is a perfect spot for magnums.

Not all racking is the single bottle type. The triangle sections below give you greater bottle storage capacity per unit of area. This is useful when you buy 6 of a wine (or a few of the same wine over different vintages).

As you can see I have bottle tags on a lot of my wine. I do this to make it easier to find and also so I don't need to pull bottles out to check what it is. If I have more than one bottle of the same wine, I just tag one of them and put them together.

The room size is roughly 2360mm by 1540mm.

Thanks for the detail,
What's the capacity of the layout?

I don't know exactly. I have about 950 bottles in there now. On most of the racking the top two rows are actually empty bottles filled with water (ore thermal mass). Same of those 950 is also in boxes. I'd estimate capacity around the 1200 mark.

One thing I should add about those triangle storage areas. They work brilliants for Bordeaux bottles. Burgundy not quite as well but do-able. Riesling bottles are fine too. Champagne though is a bit of a nightmare in them.

Cheers, my (hopefully, upcoming build) cellar will be ~1.8 x 2.3. Been trying to work out what I think I can store and the type of configuration I should have.
Aiming for flat (cork), upright (screwcap), boxed and wood box display. Hopeful to include some magnums down the track as well. Currently in 2 x fridges and closets is around 610 bottles...

Thanks for sharing this @qaz , a lot of the info in that article was aligning itself with my thinking, however there’s so much info out there, not to mention stigma with cellaring wine.
At least I know Im on the right track with what I’m doing at my place.
Hopefully in my next house I can have a cellar or basement, or even a slightly more dedicated space? However with the way house prices are going in Melbourne I’d be better to stay put and just spend higher price per bottle and purchase cellar releases 😂
no worries - and note @Daver6 the ullages of the 30yo wines are still into the neck :) also @Mynameislucluc, the $3650 installed 1300-bottle coolroom doesn't require electricity, let alone air conditioning
Anyone built a wine room in their home?

I'm building, and I'm thinking where I have WIP I may extend 2-4m and just create a room with wine racks. I could spend money to insulate the room well but I'm unsure what temp it would create. I dont like the idea of running an air con unit 24/7 for half a year, currently at my parents home they have a 4 room cellar which can hold thousands of bottles. I will build with Hebel too, I think it's 2.6 rating alone, plus extra I would do around the room itself separately than the house.

I did find a website which explained, what would be ideal for a room but i can't find it.

Otherwise I just keep everything at my parents, which is under 5 minutes away.

Mine are definitely stacked along the lines of Terris

whoa, how do you know what wines are there, let alone where exactly and how to remove a bottle? how often are you rearranging?

My only tip is that life's better when one's wine room is bigger than one's study!
The architect did want to switch those rooms around, and then proceeded to give me a $4 aldi wine recommendation to fill it up with!!
or have interconnecting access? :)

these posts might help - i like this design - but avoid this

My wines are cataloged in CellarTracker with a location and bin (a fridge and shelf), I do need to dig through a shelf to locate a bottle though. The wine in the cabinets are in long term cellaring. I have been rearranging annually, moving wines I want to drink into a wine rack in the house. when loading I tend to put newest vintages on the bottom of the shelf so I don’t need to disturb some shelves for 2-3 years. working for me so far

Thanks for sharing. Great price and just in time for the cashback up size.

FYI cash rewards has 15% if you're not targeted for shopback 20%
I was at a house party and forgot, just made it in time for CR. It was only a $5-10 difference, so still happy with saving $35 on the already good price.

Just realised one of the builders I'm in discussion with has done differently forms of Wine rooms and this is one of the recent ones.

I guess it comes down to room!
