hsbc-star-alliance-card-art.pngWhy we like the HSBC Star Alliance credit card

Launched in 2022, the HSBC Star Alliance credit card is the first of its kind anywhere in the world. You'll earn Star Alliance Points which are transferable to a choice of seven Star Alliance member airlines at a time of your choosing. You can also earn Star Alliance Silver or Gold status just by spending on the card, with no flying required!

Once you qualify for the welcome offer and are fast tracked to Star Alliance Gold status with any of the seven participating carriers, you’ll soon be enjoying perks like airport priority lanes and lounge access when flying across the whole Star Alliance network. It is the largest airline alliance in the world with 25 member airlines, including Air New Zealand, Singapore Airlines, United and Turkish Airlines.

Please note that the welcome offer is not available to existing HSBC customers transferring from another HSBC credit card, or if you have previously held a HSBC Star Alliance credit card within the last 18 months. Refer to the full T&C’s for more information:

Hi all,

Made the required spend early Jan, statement arrived 20th Jan. But still no email about attaining SA Gold...

How do I escalate this, or just be patient?

I got the email immediately I’d made the qualifying spend, did not have to wait for the statement, which I was expecting.

Have you confirmed it’s all qualifying spend? Things like council rates are deemed ‘government’ and don’t count.

Definitely all qualifying spend! Since then, have put through >$10k of various qualifying spend too, and still nothing...

I think you get gold on the date your statement is due, but I'm not sure, off the top of my head.

I wouldn't panic quite yet. Make sure your email is up to date on the star alliance website.

No, gold is independent.

As soon as you hit the qualifying spend you are directed to the star alliance site to choose your preferred program for status.

Then you wait 14 days. The you get the status. Although SQ might be a little slower from reading some other reports.

I did all of that between my first and second statements.

Just escalated to HSBC, was told it could take up to 30 days for the confirmation email to arrive (didn't realise email's slow mail...)! So playing the waiting game for a few more days...

In the mean time, I'm on the SA Rewards site registering a new account.

Now stuck... Kept asking for valid SA ID... Won't accept what I enter... Is this something I wait for in the confirmation letter?

The star alliance ID I think came with the initial set up of the account? Although now you mention it I’m not sure anymore!

Should be in an email. But if you’ve ever held an HSBC account before, check email addresses from way back. Mine went to an address unused for over 10 years.

Hi everyone. With this account, do I set up a Star Alliance/Air Canada account first or wait until I receive the email saying I've met the minimum spend and signup then? I previously haven't held a SA or Aeroplan account. Many thanks.

No no, you need to sign up first! Otherwise the minimum spend doesn’t have anything to attach to, as in a star FF program.

I haven’t opened an Aeroplan account yet. For those that have and also have Middle names - can you please let me know:

SA only use First Name field and Last Name. Aeroplan have separate fields for First Name, Middle Name (optional), and Last Name. SA specifically told me names have to match on these accounts or points transfer may not occur.

So did you combine your first & middle names in the SA rego or did you just drop your middle name from the Aeroplan account? I actually can’t even log onto the SA account regardless as it’s rejecting something as not being consistent. SA are helpful but they have taken me as far as they can.

Just as an FYI for others thinking of applying or that have applied, I never received the Star Alliance ID via email (inbox, junk etc.) so went into the HSBC Branch and was then told to call the hotline. Not the smoothest/easiest process but they will resend the SA ID details to me. I was told the spend should still qualify as they use my statement as the evidence (it's due in about two weeks for me). Thanks everyone again. The help on here is better than HSBC itself!

Chased up my bonus 50,000 points, was told they will (finally) come on the 29th... will keep you posted
Can you please let me know how you went about chasing up the bonus points?
Did you call/email/etc? If you can share more details that will be great - I need to do the same soon.

You should be able to access your Star Alliance ID via HSBC Online Banking. Click on "Manage > Redeem Rewards" and another window should open with your Star Alliance ID.

Got mine today too!
Hi. Who did you chase up with that got you the result? I have contacted Aeroplan, Star Alliance and HSBC and they are all telling me to go to the other!

Yes, quite few of us in the same boat. Would be good to know.

For those who received their bonus Aeroplan 50,000 points, how long after qualifying did they post? I qualified for star gold on 25th Nov with Aeroplan but yet to receive anything.

Thanks
Yes, same here. I got my gold SA on 23rd November, yet as of today, still no points.

I do CC churning and this been the longest after completed spend that I have had to wait for points.

Another one here - the buck passing going on is amateurish - clear breach of the t's and c's on their part - can you imagine if one of us broke the t's and c's of the card - two sets of rules.......

I can i say is I called them, I'm pretty sure I got the offer as soon as it was available. The bonus points took the longest ive ever waited AFTER min spend. Pretty sure its 90 days regardless of how quick you meet the spend. Best of luck
