hsbc-star-alliance-card-art.pngWhy we like the HSBC Star Alliance credit card

Launched in 2022, the HSBC Star Alliance credit card is the first of its kind anywhere in the world. You'll earn Star Alliance Points which are transferable to a choice of seven Star Alliance member airlines at a time of your choosing. You can also earn Star Alliance Silver or Gold status just by spending on the card, with no flying required!

Once you qualify for the welcome offer and are fast tracked to Star Alliance Gold status with any of the seven participating carriers, you’ll soon be enjoying perks like airport priority lanes and lounge access when flying across the whole Star Alliance network. It is the largest airline alliance in the world with 25 member airlines, including Air New Zealand, Singapore Airlines, United and Turkish Airlines.

Please note that the welcome offer is not available to existing HSBC customers transferring from another HSBC credit card, or if you have previously held a HSBC Star Alliance credit card within the last 18 months. Refer to the full T&C’s for more information:

Does this happen as you are applying for the credit card or something seperate?
It is a promotion linked to HSBC. But works through the star alliance portal.

So you sign up for the card, get a star alliance ID, then once you have completed the spend, you get to nominate your preferred airline for status.

If you choose air canadia, you get 50k points from them. If you choose another airline, you don’t get the bonus points.

Anyone ever not gotten the Star Alliance ID soon after getting approved for the card?

I got mine very soon after acceptance, but it's been over a month for my partner and nothing.

Did you really have to provide them with bank login details?

To provide such would surely be against the terms and conditions of you existing bank(s).
Generally they offer this as a “service” but you can do it manually and it’s not compulsory.
As you say, it’s definitely against any bank T and Cs but is getting more common.

I did! They wanted the BSB and account number… apparently some inter-bank thing where they can then check your salary is being paid in etc. As cynicor says, you can do it manually, but it seemed like a lot of work to do it that way!

I had assumed it was ‘legal’ given (a) HSBC was asking for it and (b) they had an arrangement with other banks to plug in the number and get the data they needed.

BSB and Account number are different from bank login details.

There was briefly (or maybe still around) one that wanted passwords. Was a bit ridiculous and it’s good to hear that there is a safer way now, without going to the manual process

BSB/account, just what tradies and businesses often give out for payment.
What personal info can a bank disclose (to HSBC) from that?

I’ve wondered that as well. Wouldn’t want them having full access to something like expenses.

I nearly missed mine - the title of the email was "Resume your Star Alliance Rewards registration".

Not exactly obvious.
When I actually read the email it had my Star alliance ID in the body. Was that the same for you? Maybe your partner missed the email? Easy to do..

Never got the email, but realised that your Star Alliance ID is on the bottom of your HSBC statement, so all is well.

I'd be assuming they'd gain access to each transaction. May be selective data/transactions, but imo you'd be safer to assume the whole kit n kaboodle.

Also does there access expire, is it a screen shot basically at point in time?
Who's to really know.

Question on points transfer from star ID to a program… how long does it take? Instant or sometime longer? I have my eye on an award, but happy to leave them in star until needed.
