Hydroxychloroquine - What Goes On?

I like watching Fox News.

Last Monday, on his radio show, Hannity interviewed a Doctor in a New York hotspot. Doctor said, he treated 350 patients of his and 150 in another area with hydroxychloroquine, antibiotics and zinc sulfate . At that time, he had had none going to hospital and none dead.

Next day Hannity had another New York doctor on who was also treating his patients with hydroxychloroquine - he was more coy about citing facts and figures, but said his results from using the anti-malaria drug on patients were positive.

On Saturday, Tucker Carlson had another doctor on describing the nightmare in New York hospitals. The Doctor then stated that he was using the anti-malaria drug as a prophylactic.

And New York Governor Cuomo was procuring 750,000 doses of the malaria drug chloroquine; 70,000 doses of its derivative, hydroxychloroquine; and 10,000 doses of the antibiotic Zithromax.

After President Trump expressed optimism over the results that French doctors had gotten with the drugs, and he had ordered the FDA to fast track testing of hydroxychloroquine, the Governors of Nevada and Michigan then passed orders preventing their doctors from using hydroxychloroquine on their patients,

These reports sort of raised a lot of questions to me like -
Would it not be a simple statistical test to see if, on contracting the virus, the population of people currently taking the drug for Lupus and arthritis have a significantly lower hospitalisation and death rate than the general population?

Would it not be a simple statistical test to compare the hundreds already treated with the drugs after contracting the virus, to an equivalent number of people who contracted the virus a few weeks prior who weren't treated?

What's up with those State Governors banning its use? and

Is the drug useless, or are New Yorkers and people here and in other countries now dying needlessly?

Then, on The Bolt Report tonight, he reported that New York health workers are now on the anti-malaria drug.
And that France and Italy now allows it to be used in some cases.
And that our health workers will be starting a trial in three weeks.

So, is this some kind of Right Wing Conspiracy in presenting the information above?
Or, does a partial cure fo rthe epidemic exist, but it doesn't work for the public ......but it is good for health workers? (Kind of reminds me of our Face Mask discussion)

Any thoughts?
Regards,
Renato

As a youngster I inherited a low loader driver who lived on Beer and Bex, he had this massive cardboard box of the stuff in his truck and I never saw him eat.
I just couldn't get my young teetotal head around this ; the old fellow had been with the company for a very long time and was quite valued by the owner.
Sadly someone had to go.. and I hired a decent but inexperienced young driver who proceeded to drop a newish bulldozer into a bottomless creek and cost us a mint to fix.

I never said anything about naming fish tank cleaner.
Really not sure why you need to be obtuse, and hyperbolic in defending him.

I made a simple correction, Trump did not say Quinine, as you claimed. He said a chemical name, that matched the ingredients on the bottle. I think the bias here is with the person going off on a rant, on wrong information, to defend trump
I said fish tank cleaner because it is what the fellow died from.He drank that he did not take tablets of chloroquine.
I am just stating the truth rather than try to politicize the matter not to defend Pres.Trump.

The first group has a chronic serious illness, How do you correct for that in a healthy group? The underlying reason the first group is getting hydroxychoroquine can certainly skew the results.
Not sure what you mean - what chronic serious illness in the first group?

First group of 500 got infected, and after showing symptoms, were given the three drugs by their Doctor.
Compare it to a second group, who got infected and after showing symptoms didn't get those drugs by their Doctor.

Renato

I was watching Hannity last night, who was interviewing Dr Oz. Dr Oz reported that he had been talking to the French Doctor who's initial results using hydroxychoroquine and anti-biotics led to President Trump's interest.

Dr Oz reported that the French Doctor didn't want to claim credit, as he was following what Chinese doctors had relayed to him.

Dr Oz reported on the French Doctor's recent results with 80 patients using the drug combination. One died, one was hospitalised and the remainder were over the virus within 5 days, the implication being that the drug combination might not do much for the death rate, but could stop hospitals being overrun with patients.

Fox News seems to be the place to get news on hydroxychoroquine.

This one, is probably a good, relatively apolitical summary:

But likewise I wonder how much we need to critically review articles like you post when they say (my bolding):

There are currently no medications or vaccines proven to be effective for the direct treatment or prevention of SARS-CoV-2, the disease caused by COVID-19 coronavirus.

They seem to carefully added the word 'proven'. Sure, 'proof' in a medical context = research, trials, peer review, publication. But we have seen that these drugs *may* have helped out at least some of those infected.

So yeah, maybe no proof, but I still wouldn't want to rule out the use of the drug if there were no other options.

So yeah, maybe no proof, but I still wouldn't want to rule out the use of the drug if there were no other options.

It's not completely ruling them out but is suggesting that it can be administered under an approved hospital protocol, which is not unreasonable. The challenge me be the length of time it takes to get such a protocol approved, but one hopes things are being expedited with this emergency:

Use of these medications should only occur under the direction of a medical provider, for an FDA-approved indication, as part of a trial for the treatment of COVID-19 or as part of an approved hospital protocol

And in the land of litigation, even with a COVID-19 crisis, there are probably financial risks to individuals and their insurers with administering an drug with unproven efficacy, unless there is a mechanism for immunity from such litigation.

This goes for Fox news viewers and green religion disciples alike you ushould never rely on a single source of news on a single topic. Google, look around, share, think for yourself.

This one, is probably a good, relatively apolitical summary:

You keep saying that - and I could have sat around day after day watching CNN telling everyone that President Trump was spreading False Hope, and caused the death of an American and Africans, with that False Hope.

And today - seeing that Italy, France, America, China and numerous other countries are pumping out hundreds of millions of doses - I would have been wondering about all that False Hope/Orange Man Bad rubbish I had been told about.

Similarly, I could have spent the last three years watching CNN and MSNBC and our ABC variously telling me Trump colluded with Russians, Trump was a Russian agent, Trump was being blackmailed by Russians, Trump was mentally incompetent, and revealling "bombshell" after "bombshell" that would destroy Trump - only to find that Fox News was right all along - that it had all been a media hoax.

That's a lot of time to waste watching Leftist Globalists spitting the dummy.

As to the Joint Summary, there is another good summary that came from Scott Adams in his video blog on YouTube several weeks ago. He asserted that all Doctors and their families, all celebrities and all politicians were already on hydroxychloroquine. And now all the health workers in New York are on it too.

Of course, Trump is always right. Sorry to disagree with Fox News. It’s dangerous to one’s health.

“On January 22, when asked if we should be worried about the virus in China, Trump said: “No. Not at all. And we have it totally under control. It’s one person coming in from China, and we have it under control. It’s going to be just fine.”

On January 30: “We have it very well under control. We have very little problem in this country at this moment – five. And those people are all recuperating successfully.”

February 10: “Looks like by April, you know, in theory, when it gets a little warmer, it miraculously goes away.”

February 27: “It’s going to disappear. One day – it’s like a miracle – it will disappear.”
March 10: “It will go away. Just stay calm. It will go away.”

So pleased we live in Australia.

Renato,
Like many here I like a good debate.
I have to say though that I have no idea what about half of that last post means.
Also I have asked you twice (or more), without answer, to explain what should be done instead of how it’s now being rolled out.

You keep saying that - and I could have sat around day after day watching CNN telling everyone that President Trump was spreading False Hope,

I'm not saying you should sit around day after day watching CNN, did I say that anywhere? Relying on any media outlet whether they be Fox News, CNN, Breitbart, the ABC, Channel 9, BBC, or Al Jazeera, as a single source of news is not a good idea. Maybe the best thing is to watch some old episodes of Rob Sitch's Frontline, a (cynical) insight into how the media crafts current affairs stories.

Rupert Murdoch makes a lot of money out of people by either making them outraged (as do the owners of the "lefty" media), or making them feel warm and fuzzy by re-inforcing peoples already held views. The views that Fox News put out are carefully crafted as a money making tool for Rupert's empire (either by increasing the amount of time people watch them, or to create a groundswell of support for policies that further his business's interests). But so does the lefty media as well.

Interesting article: Lost someone to Fox News? Science says they may be addicted to anger - The Boston Globe It calls out FoxNews, but could equally apply to a lot of the anti-Trump media right now too.

This was news in Thailand over a month ago so they must have been watching Fox news too? They have been ordering the drug and have started trials.

It's worth a shot (see what I did there?) when used in conjunction with other drugs and good on Fox for reporting this valuable piece of information.

Forget Fox news, this is a far better source of reliable news on the topic.

I haven’t had time to fully digest this yet, but it’s not looking good.
