I tried registering for heap of codes just before I booked 3 nights in HI Chiang Mai. Most said I had already registered. Gave up.

The only points that posted were the points for the stay + Gold bonus and 5,000 bonus points for 3 nights. I was actually targetted for 7 nights but I registerd for the 3 nights. Not a single code posted.

I am not sure I want to try and risk any more codes next time. I have 400,000+ IHG points and I do not want to lose them.

Sounds wise to me not to take too many risks when you have 400k to loose!

Be careful JohnK.. Too many points to 'cremate" too soon!

Just got an email from IHG Rewards ...

Advising, that I have 'just' 16 Nights to go, in order to secure my 15,000 point 'Reward'.

Heading says, it's from InterContinental Ambassador Program.

A legit email to me ( had all the correct details for myself ).

Evidence, that I have successfully registered for the 'Stay 18 Nights - Get 15,000 Points' offer.

I was not originally 'targeted' for the code promo.

So ... what does that now mean ?? ( regarding the concept of being 'targeted' and if you Register a non-targeted code, you will increase your risk of being closed down ).

All very odd to me. How can an assumption be made that you have to be targeted for offers when at least some are simply offered through various hotels? How do we distinguish which are targeted offers and which are "free to all" offers? Basically, the replies to JohnK say it all......if you don't want to risk account closure and ensuing loss of points, don't register for any offers unless they arrive in your email box addressed to you (and keep a copy of the email). That said, how many receive these offers from IHG? The last offers I received were for the Big Win. I've never even had the amb. accelerator offer, which I assume all ambassadors are eligible for? As per the song title, How Bizarre, How Bizarre!

400k? I'd convert to an airline program for 80000 miles/points.

Actually, no - I'd convert all but 25k for 75000 miles, keeping some for Cash & Point transactions.

I would convert all bar 5K, plenty of 15k reward hotels for point manufacturing.

I would suggest that if you are going to use a code, then it is good to make sure you understand the provenance of that code. Codes validly arrive in emails from IHG, they are given out at hotels, and they might be on the website. Then there are the codes that you find out on the internet, on forums, on blogs, etc. Like much of what you find on the internet, viewer discretion should be advised. Think about code, and what little snippet the bloggers give you. If you have been a member for five years, does a code with a desciption of "NEW MEMBER BONUS FOR 60 DAYS", sound like something that is for you? As for the Amb. Accelerator, this was openly disclosed as a benefit of membership for some years. It ends in a couple of weeks, so probably doesn't matter so much now.

AA miles? I have ~417,000 IHG points.

With 60,000 AA miles I can get a return to Thailand in business. I value that at ~AUD1,500 maybe ~AUD2,000 at a stretch. Would I get that much value out of award night redemptions?

The recent 2 night Pointbreak stay at Crowne Plaza, Lumpini Park, Bangkok was great.

There are a lot of options including BA, VA, SQ, UA & QF: Travel | IHG® Rewards Club

I know there are lots of options.

VA useless. SQ too expensive. QF useless and too expensive.

AA would be best option if I transferred to airline miles. The thing to work out is can I do better redeeming those points for hotel rooms?

With your points, you get ~80 nights during a points break.

Actually it is 83 nights but they are so difficult to find when needed.

Perhaps I should just book 2-3 Pointbreaks nights here and there and offer them as present to friends who are travelling.

You could sell them, and then we would be back on topic

One of the questions to answer in whether you should redeem for hotel or airlines is for you have any need for 83 Pointbreaks nights. While Pointbreaks offer superb value it's only value if you have both a desire and ability to use. Sounds to me like you don't so I'd be looking to use some for air miles.

Just make sure you book your reward nights via Ebates/MrRebates etc to get your cashback. Some people from what I have heard have been making some decent returns booking New Years at the Sydney HI.

JohnK, have you thought about the IHG Flights Anywhere option? Flights from 20,000 points.

I have just read through a lengthy thread on Flyertalk about this issue. I get the distinct impression that they have for some reason starting casting their web much more widely than before. However, it still seems they by and large go for relatively new or not commonly used accounts. But there seems to be a few regular users caught in the new. Pretty hard to figure out what is going on, but the code thing does seem to be at the heart of it.
