Oh Bugga it might have too look at Hilton program Lol
Not much better unless status benefits are your thing.

In fact I would say if rewards nights if your main aim then IHG is much better.

I have just read through a lengthy thread on Flyertalk about this issue. I get the distinct impression that they have for some reason starting casting their web much more widely than before. However, it still seems they by and large go for relatively new or not commonly used accounts. But there seems to be a few regular users caught in the new. Pretty hard to figure out what is going on, but the code thing does seem to be at the heart of it.
Our good friend Shanye has had his account closed (FT thread)

...A new and exciting news less than a week before departure I got multiple emails from ihg reservations cancelling all my reservations including cash , points and Brg's 6 reservations in total. I rang ihg just now who told me it was a executive decision to cancel my entire ihg account along with all my reservations. Seriously less than a week out....
It has come to our attention that some of your recent IHG Rewards Club account activities are in violation of the terms and conditions of IHG Rewards Club and the IHG Best Price Guarantee program. Such violations are considered fraudulent by IHG Rewards Club and IHG. As such we have terminated your IHG Rewards Club account..
< snip >..
I think they don't like people taking advantage of their offer best rate gaurantees. What is a bit rude is they cancel all my booking less then a week out and take all my points from the big win promo over 200k worth.

Come on that's hardly fair. Don't let ordinary folk register for these promo codes..... Please put a bar on codes that people are not targeted for

There is a lot more than meets the eye with that person.

IHG would not be the first program they have abused. Is it possible to feel sorry for someone but not have any sympathy for them at the same time?

The individual in question has had multiple accounts over a number of programs cancelled.

Quite a difference in trying to maximise your point earn and abusing/gaming the system.

I think most people who read these forums with an IHG membership has gamed the system at some point or another. I'm not sure that's abusing the system, especially when IHG themselves know about the loopholes and don't/can't close them but at the same time promote gaming within their rewards program. Even their own forum has promoted codes to use for bonus points so how is the average travel forum gamer to know which are those that are a wink and nod OK (maximising point earn in your words) and which are those that IHG consider abuse worthy of account closure. It's just very bizarre behaviour for a loyalty program. Sure, let IHG tighten up the system.....that's not only their prerogative but it's also wise business for them......but to close accounts because of gaming the system?? Come on. How are they determining who should have their account closed? I've gamed their system with codes I wasn't targeted for, but I've also gamed their system in their own Big Win promo.......so why should others accounts be closed but mine still OK? It's just plain wrong.

There are differences in the severity of the impact, fifty BRGs for a start including presidential type suites.
