Improvements to the Qantas Lounge Access Policy for families

Putting up with kids in lounges for 1-2 hours is hardly going ruin anyone's day.

It's the 12hours + sitting next to them in a small F or J cabin that will most likely do your head in;)

Not having a good day at all.

A French couple and their 2 young kids think that the Qantas Business Lounge is the perfect place to keep them amused. :( Not to worry but there is noise everywhere and this just adds to it.

And the guy behind me is bored so decides he has to call everyone he knows.

Had a couple of people push in the security line earlier downstairs and printer at work has been moved next to my desk. The only thing that is missing is for the coffee machine and microwave to be placed there and everything will be sweet. This is only a temporary move. Until the end of May! That is not temporary. :( Anyone sitting in an office should not make any decisions affecting people sitting in an open plan environment. They really do not know the answer....

Looks like i am disadvantaged by the latest "improvements" to lounge access for families. So much for not splitting up families...

We travel to the USA each year and we have 4 kids (15, 13, twins aged 12). Up until now my family have enjoyed our time together in the J and F Lounges. It appears we can no longer enjoy this time together in the lounges due to the latest "improvements".

I am Platinum and my wife and kids are just FF Bronze and non QC members.

I guess we should be thankful for the experience we have had up until now.

I have emailed Customer Care with my concerns...wonder what they will say..."bad luck"?

I'm betting you'll still be ok.. They're fairly generous for families.. Prior to this they could have not let you in at all.

I really hope you re right, nlagelle :-) Fingers crossed.

I did BCC my CBR Lounge Host friends and one has responded saying that there won't be a problem in CBR and they will let the family in...but I have to stay in the foyer!! haha cheeky!

I have always found the Canberra Qantas lounge angels very friendly and welcoming - our family of 5 has varied in status and access but we have always been legitimate (i.e had enough status or memberships to allow us in), however we've never been checked. The normal greeting is - a family - welcome!

Just out of interest, how close are you to 2400 SCs, if your wife were granted complimentary gold, would this solve your issues with the 4 children (2 each into the J Lounge)

Not quite. Gold won't get you access to the J lounge and oonly has 1 guest..

But still I know the QP staff are fairly relaxed with kids.. Heck they have allowed me extra guests in the past.

I'd prefer the lounge to be free of both minors and miners, but thumbs up to Qantas for codifying the existing unwritten rule. A bit of certainty is always a good thing.

I'd rather have an DYKWIA free airline instead.. 400+ flights and they are worse than kids....

Depends, if I am on holidays DYKWIA free airline for sure, but if I am tired or have to get off the plane and straight to work, then DYKWIA airline for sure. Each has their own advantages. Have flown a lot recently with AA in F, plenty of DYKWIAs there, claiming ownership to the overhead bins above them, disadvantage at first, but at the end of a long SC run, DYKWIAs are a godsend as peace and quiet and more importantly seem to sense when and what to talk about, if at all.

This is never an easy debate but it would appear that people who cause noise expect others to be tolerant and be considerate of their needs.

Actually it is the other way around. If I am in the lounge I want some quiet time. I do not need your problems and that includes you running your business or trying to control your family.

Am I being harsh?

I agree with you John and don't think this is harsh at all. My pet peeve is more the use of loud conversations on mobiles and also those who choose to use their mobiles when there are mobile free zones (if there are anymore). I saw this happening often before in Brisbane club prior to making the business lounge.

I am often tempted to say to the user of loud mobile conversation when they finish 'i'm so sorry to hear uncle john is unwell or you are about to leave your partner, etc., etc.' .

The kids enclosed rooms I've seen in some AC in States seem to work well for families and others. For me, though it is the action of adults that annoy me more than children. Although, children in lounges isn't an issue for me other than the 'hogging' of the computers but I can live without the computer for a couple of hours wait time.

I've tried to figure out if people's manners and consideration of others have deteriorated over the years or am I just more aware of it now. Behaving in public as though one is the only one to be considered is not my thing.

They are better than that, they are fantastic for removing all that excess energy from the youngsters, so when they join the main lounge, they are more or less spent, if they get irritable, it is back to the kids room for a while.
I must admit getting a little peeved off at times in the QP SYD T3 lounge where there are only 4 computer terminals and three of them are being tied up with kids on facebook or playing games, what possible business work could a 12 year old be doing, suggest that there should be a sign, sorry kids, people over 16 years get preference to the computer terminals.

To be fair I don't think the Facebook phenomenon is exclusively an "under 16" thing.

Just like noisy and annoying people in the cabin are not exclusively kids an infants.

It is a public space, although I agree a little (or in this case, ample) consideration should be expected.

Computers in lounges are no different to the good seats on planes - first in, best dressed (unless you're gazumped by higher status).....In this day & age most FF would have their own device anyway.

The turnover of people in lounges is pretty fast allowing a fair chunk of members to use facilities when required.

Great to see the unwritten rule now a policy. Has my support.

Speaking as a parent with young kids we love these kids zones (and so do our kids). Malaysian has good ones in each of its lounges. QF should introduce these.
